Admittedly, this is a bit overdue, but, then again, I'm also behind on my progress and have less than a week before Blizzcon! Luckily, I have all of Tuesday and most of Thursday to finish up anything I don't get done tonight. For now, though, I've decided to take a break to rest my hands and update the world on my progress.

Initial concept:

My first design:

My second design:

I decided to do a combination of my first and second design, though they are quite similar to each other.

The most daunting part of my costume was, and still is, the baneling "butt." I've never done a "large" costume item, especially something like this. I initially was thinking of just making a sack of sorts and filling it with bubble wrap and other light material. My friend, luckily, told me I would have a better shot with wire. I happened to have an access of wire from making the horns for my Alexstrasza costume last year.

Excuse the rotated picture, but the initial approach seemed to work out well:

After making the approximate shape, I strung another wire around in the shape I wanted the large "sack" to be. I found some gigantic bubble wrap (heavy duty, too!) and taped sheets of it below this wire, then I stared at it until I thought I'd cry.

When it comes down to it, I am terrible at sewing. I'll make armor all day, but I just can't sew worth a damn. Also, I don't happen to have a sewing machine at my disposal. I spend a good week lamenting how I didn't know how to sew an appropriate sack until I got fed up and decided just to go for it.

I sewed the top around the wire in the front until I ran out of fabric, then stretched that around the bottom. I taped that in placed and GLUED IT. Hell yes, screw sewing, glue is the answer. Then I pulled the extra up and sewed it in the back! Ta-da! Baneling butt sack #1!

Unfortunately, I'm unsure how to proceed with the smaller sacks. I think I'm going to cut them out of craft foam, then cover them with the fabric. I have cut a few out of craft foam, but I've lost my needle and thread, so I can't make much more progress in that regard.

Next, I decided to tackle the chest cover. First, I make the breast sections. I experimented with shapes using newspaper before I decided on the cuts that would work well.

After making those, I decided on the shape for the other part of the chestpiece. It was tricky deciding on positioning and involved a LOT of time in front of the mirror trying to hold both pieces on and use a measuring tape at the same time. WTB third hand.

I eventually figured out a decent pattern, though:

For the black pieces, I decided to use black craft foam and then, instead of painting it like I usually do, covering it with a textured black fabric. I picked a kind of snake-skin esq material that I think looks pretty good. I cut out the craft foam directly from the pattern, but gave a bit of extra room when cutting the fabric, so I could cover up any discrepancies and then cut it down to size after gluing.

As that was drying, to reinforce the breastpieces, I covered their backs in glue and cheesecloth, as usual!

Then, again, with a lot of experimentation, I figured out the front of the bottoms. This piece will rest over an undergarment, either a green of black bikini bottom.

When the glue mostly dried on the back of the breastpieces, I decided to cover them. I found that the glue soaks into the fabric and makes it a darker color. Since sewing wasn't an option, either, I decided to get creative: I carefully pulled the fabric over the breastpieces, while securing it in place with bobbypins, then glued the extra fabric down in the back. I wasn't sure it would work, but it did!

More recently, I've been working on the "spine," which will help hold my costume together and give it a little bit more of a creepy feel. The spine I initially sketched out was rather simple, so I decided to make it a little more detailed in actuality. I am currently cutting out the foam pieces, but I will cover them with the fabric before gluing them together:

More to come later!

<3

~*UPDATE*~

Whew! Lots of work done today and my fingers are bleeding because of it! Literally!

XD

Anyway, the top is pretty much done, I just need to stick the velcro on it and figure out where to attach it to the spine when I finish that.

Here's the top, I'm kind of holding it on so it is squishing me on the side a bit more than it will when it's done. I know, I know, it doesn't look much, but with the neck-piece, bottoms and shoulder armor, it'll look like, well, more.

Anyway, I did all of my "green-work" today, so I am done with that green fabric! Just have to finish my black fabric work and attach everything!

Last time, I showed what it looked like when I was preparing to glue the fabric on to foam. This time, I'll show you what it looks like in the process. Ugly. It looks really, really ugly.

I tried gluing the fabric to the upholstery foam, too, but it just wouldn't stick. Thus, I decided to hand sew it! Hence why my fingers are bleeding.

In order to sew them together, I had to carve out the center of the foam, which will make it more lightweight and flexible.

Though stitching them together was painful, it actually didn't take very much time, so I finished all of the pieces much faster than I thought I would!

They don't look perfect (especially around the edges), but they are way better than I could have hoped for with my poor sewing skills!

Next I'm gluing the fabric on the spine pieces, then figuring out the neck, head and shoulder attachments! Then I just have to figure out how to attach that huge butt to my butt and all will be good for Friday!

~*UPDATE*~

My floor is absolutely littered with pieces of my costume that are drying. The end is near, oh-so-near.

I made much faster progress than I expected to, I cut out the rest of the bottoms, the helm and the neck-piece. I'm so close to done I can almost taste it, but I need to let the current pieces dry and try them on before I can finish. Really, all I have left is gluing on a lot of velcro and sewing the rest of the fabric on the butt.

Here's my poor floor:

I've added the eyes and teeth to the helm! The teeth might be a little large, but I think it's cute. I'm not sure how the eyes are going to hold on, though, I'm scared they aren't going to stick.

@.@

The end is so near, but my fingers are bleeding and sore, so I'm finding it hard to get the motivation to finish.

FINAL PRODUCT:

I like it. You're presenting a personality of being cute but volatile.

Also, I'm fine with this being my 6000th post since I love Community and the above sentence seems like something Abed would say.

Nice concept art and planning art. Its an awesome project! that will be by far the best Halloween costume around :D I would never have the patience to piece together cloth like that.

i dont know how many of you have seen Eddie Murphy's delirious. But this instantly reminded me of his joke about STDs. Here's a video for reference. :D

Probably NSFW due to language. The part i am referring to is just the first min in the video.

If I was at Blizzcon, I would gladly support your efforts at competing against all the WoW and Diablo cosplayers in showing that Starcraft has the best fans.

But I still think you should have gone for the perverted Mutalisk costume for the lulz.

Will you do a somersault on the stage or is the centrifugal hooks upgrade not a part of the plan?

Probably would be more effective if I was a guy.

I do not plan in partaking in the costume competition, so... no chance to show them my awesome roll!

giving other people a chance to win eh? I see, how kind. How do you keep deciding what to do next? is there a list? or just go based on what you see to motivate you at a certain point in time?

Haha, unfortunately, I don't nearly have enough time, money nor skill to make a costume that would have a chance to win.

As for deciding, I have a mental check list of sorts, but I mostly go by what I feel like I can do... AND which needs the most amount of gluing done. My Alexstrasza costume taught me not to underestimate glue drying time.

I'm kind of dying due to a really bad cold right now, so I've found myself with very little motivation to do anything but sleep and beg Serif to make me more tea.

Glue guns are the best. I'd kill for one right now, but, alas, I'm a poor college student, so I'm making due with cheaper, longer alternatives.

Irrelevant question: But, weren't you going to attend Ultimate Barcraft or such? Now that its cancelled, kind of a bummer.

This costume could only be more skimpy if you went naked.

I was going to. I'm sooo, sooo, soooooo sad that it's canceled. I had convinced a TON of Riot peeps to show up to it, too.

Why does the baneling wear a thong and fishnet stockings in your sketches?

Why do so many males on Team Liquid seem to not know what a thong is?

Don't you look at porn? Have you never seen a woman's underwear?

Why do so many females on this planet think men know anything about women's clothing?

Men don't watch porn for the clothes, they're usually paying attention to the naked girl. When men see a woman's underwear the thought usually is "off now" =P

anyway's, i think what he's asking is why is your baneling wearing something akin to a bikini which is close to a thong immo (in my male opinion)

That's like saying a sneaker is akin to a flipflop.

Anyway, it's partially because I'm lazy.

I mean, it's the day before Blizzcon and I'm still not done. I suck balls at sewing, as I've made clear, so the more "costume" I make, the longer and harder it is.

I wanted to feminize banelings, not make a realistic baneling costume, the easiest way to do that is to show I'm female!

Admittedly, I wouldn't have minded different bottoms, but a skirt would have looked silly and I can't see how pants would work.

Mostly, though, it's because I was attempting to copy the concept art as close as possible, but, since she has bug legs, the closest I could do was copy the style of the rest of her outfit which was a small, strapless top.

I'm sure I'll get boatloads of criticism and harsh comments when the pictures of my completed costume hit the web. So it goes.

A thong and a pair of panties look the same from the front. Seeing as your sketches show a frontal view there is no possible way to discern whether or not it is a thong. Thus, it could be a thong.

Unless, perhaps, you wear yours backwards or something.

If they didn't show the back, then why would one assume it's a thong? Having that baneling butt rubbing against my bare ass would be terribly uncomfortable.

You were clearly saying it just for the effect, which is absurd and rude.

The CGI baneling has a top that's like three sizes too small for her bulging breasts. Coupled with your choice of fishnet stockings I made the perfectly valid assumption that you were going for sex appeal with your costume. Am I wrong?

If not I don't really see how a thong would've been invalid.

My original question was simply asking why you chose to go with lingerie and stockings for your costume as opposed to, say, wearing a bloated plush mascot outfit (which is what nearly all people will think of when someone says 'baneling costume'). I'd rather you just not answer the question than to be overly defensive and lash out for no reason. I'll just assume it's a personal design choice.

And what would be the sex appeal to a thong that no one can see the back of? Also, I believe I've made at least one rant in my blogs about how thongs are ugly, permanent wedges that I just don't understand the purpose of.

And I answered your original question, did I not? Look back a few posts, I believe I addressed the reasons for my choices quite thoroughly.

I'm not being defensive, I'm being irritated by people exaggerating and being absurd to give me more grief. It is quite clear you could have phrased that original question in a more polite manner and without stating an assumption as a fact.

Also, I believe I'm going to be wearing solid black thigh highs if they are in my drawer, I just dislike coloring in solid parts (as you can see by the fact none of the black parts of my costume are shaded except for on the first butt draft).

... I'm so jealous. You can draw so fine and even though you will probably say 'random sketches' I really do believe its drawn very well and I like the sketches. Not even saying how awesome it is you can design and make your own stuff.

Now its a costume but have you thought about designing your own clothes? I think you could very well do that. And for your design itself, its very female, sexy and for what I can see (foresee, as its not finished) doesn't look cheap or slutty. You can be proud.

Also I hope its not creepy to say, but your tummy is damn fine O.O! ~~~~ sorry.

Actually, Serif was just suggesting last week I look into fashion design. Truthfully, I don't feel fully up to it. I prefer designing weird things and armor! Perhaps I could get into costume design, but I've just about finished my engineering degree, so I'd hate for that to go to waste!

Thank you for your feedback, though, hopefully the actual costume can do the sketches justice!

normally im ok with this kind of thing, but i gotta ask what the motivation was to remove the sleeves and half the leggings you had in your designs?

just comes across as wanting to walk around half naked ;/

the more solid black from the concept picture i thought made a more 'realistic' baneling, the more sexy design of your pencil drawing just seemed odd. adding a sexy vide to a baneling just doesnt do anything for me.

She mentioned that it was a bit rushed, so I'm sure she would have added the sweet arm pincers / legs given more time.
And besides, she looks great anyway so the 'sexy baneling' look works quite well.

Comment about Baneling using Protoss technology on the picture of her texting is definitely the funniest I saw skimming through.

I have the leggings in there.

I was, however, too lazy to make the sleeves.

I finished this costume at 3am the day of Blizzcon.

Yeah, a few of the costumes were awesome! But most of them lacked effort. You would have def got some claps going in the audience.

Eh, truthfully, my costume is quite poorly done in comparison to many of the entries. While I may be somewhat original, there are much more deserving costumes out there.

Cosplay is something you do for conventions, because you actually walk around a lot and whatnot. It just wouldn't be very feasible for MLG.

To be honest I'm not fond of the cosplay, it seems to be scantily clad for the sake of being scantily clad.

I can appreciate the amount of work you put into it though.

I'm not trying to come off as rude, but the over the top sex appeal takes away from the costume for me. It seems like more of an outright attention getter to me. I DID really like your Nidalee costume though.

Have you had to deal with a girlfriend with big boobs? I prefer mine with normal-sized ones, they don't get in the way nearly as often.

Oh, yeah, my costume is supposed to be on the Jimmy Kimmel show tomorrow night.

I... uh, hadn't heard of it before, but I guess it's a legit TV show.

I'm a part of a bit about Blizzcon. @.@ I had to pretend to become some guy's girlfriend. I'm sure it'll be funny and all, but I was a little uncomfortable with it, even though Serif was standing just a few feet away, cheering me on the whole time.

Serif hugs cured me of my worries in the end.

Still though, I think getting featured on the Yogscast is bigger; way cooler show

It was one of the booths there, they make AMAZING headsets and pretty good mice and keyboards.

(If you check out their site and want something, I think I can give you a code that'll get you 40% off a lot of their products the next day or so).

Unfortunately Simon thought your costume was a bee, but who cares you were on the Yogscast!

How the verdammte hell can somebody run a show like that and have no damn clue what that "bee" outfit was supposed to be!?

Be less ignorant ffs, especially if you're doing something like this.

Perhaps, I'm just a huge nitpick, but still.

/rant

Well they do mostly play WoW, they got that it was a Zerg unit at the end.

Love Yogscast!

Dont they play just Minecraft these days...?

Anyway, ontopic. Great costume! Sure you made blizzcon way more fun for all ze nerdz around, including one Simon the Dwarf.

It went well!

I didn't wear the costume as much as I planned to due to it being a pain in the ass (har, har). I enjoyed chilling away from the attention and just enjoying the convention more than usual, probably because Serif was such a good companion.

Well.. at the start of this blog I was rather curious (and perhaps a little skeptical at first ? dunno.. experience tells that your stuff always works out pretty fine in the end actually, so perhaps not to skeptical ) how it would turn out this time...

And its absolutely gorgeous/cute

Good job again, wonder what will come up as the next project !

Idea: When you get older and it feels like the end do a Raszagal costume for your last one =P and next one maybe a mutalisk?

Well, I was tanned from the summer! I've been hiding inside for the past two months, though, so I'm starting to lose it. Serif says I'm tan enough, though, he gave me sad puppy eyes when I said I wanted to work on my tan.

I do not plan in partaking in the costume competition, so... no chance to show them my awesome roll!

You should have competed, I could totally see you beating the paladin guy who took 2nd place or the deathwing who took 3rd place, although that Adjutant that won was absurdly awesome, so I dunno if the baneling costume was cute enough to beat that.

Haha, I'm pretty sure the judges don't vote on cuteness. I really doubt I'd have placed at all.

I tried to sign up, actually, but I was too late. They only accept the first 100 applicants.

People say that, but I've never been able to notice it when listening to recordings of myself. I know I don't have a high pitched voice, but it's hard for me to compare it to other females.

I didn't think it was that deep. It's not a dainty voice, but certainly not masculine either.

Eh, I mean, I like my voice, just not sure how it compares to other women.

I have a... strong dislike of high pitched voices, so I'd definitely rather be deep voiced than high pitched.

Haha, thanks! ;p

I think it runs in my family. Ever since I was 12 or so, I was confused for my mom when I answered the phone. When my mom answered the phone, however, telemarketers would think it was my dad.
