So here's the background to the event I'm going to explain~
I have this friend and her 18th birthday was just about 2 weeks ago; she decided to finally get her driver's license. Just yesterday she got her own car and had been practicing a lot weeks prior to her birthday but I've never ridden with her.
So today, she finally has the opportunity to show off her new car/driving skills to me and honestly, I've never been so scared of being in a car with someone... She started off by almost hitting the car in front of her on top of completely backing up the line of traffic in the parking lot, and that was just picking me up. While pulling out of the lot she cut off a car and only missed them by inches... next thing I know she's humming something so I ask her what she's doing, come to find out she has her headphones in and can barely hear anything. After arguing with her for a few minutes she refuses to take them out... right after, we're trying to go straight on a road (and then take a left after the light) but she's driving in the right turn lane. I tell her that she needs to get over so without even looking swerves left and almost hits the car in front of her and forces the car on the left to swerve over to avoid hitting us. After I tell her she needs to take a left up ahead (clearly pointing to a street a ways down) she slams on the brakes in the middle of the intersection and attempts to drive into oncoming traffic in order to take a left not only on the wrong street but on a red light. After freaking out at her while cars are zooming past us she swerves back into the the right side but again without looking and almost hits another car. Now we need to take our left and she swings the car cutting off both lanes of oncoming traffic and barely makes it into the side street. We finally get to our last turn and we had to take a right, now, the light was red but she's just sitting at the intersection. After muttering "(her name), you can turn right on a red" she drives right into the middle of the intersection, stops for about a second, then ever so slowly turns into the road while blocking all traffic and coming within inches of scraping a car.
She did all this and the whole time she was completely oblivious to how many cars she almost hit...
Idk how to tell her guys how terrible she is, so any advice on how to break it to her is appreciated. really rattled atm for almost crashing like 6 times in a 10 minute window so sry if it's choppy.

Sounds like a girl blog, just teach her how to drive in your spare time and next thing you know you two will be enjoying her car from the back seat.

Holy shit, no wonder there's so many people who literally have no clue how to drive. I figured they just took driver ed, which, at least for me, allowed you to not take the driving portion.
As far as the OP - Tell her what you told us. And if she doesn't believe you, well, I guess you'll just have to never ride with her again.

How good is your acting? Next time you're driving with her or she asks you to hop in start sobbing uncontrollably and say it was the scariest moment of your life. Then when she's in guilt mode she'll be more open to listening.

i honestly feel that people like this should just not be allowed to drive...at least with my "reckless disregard of the speed limit" aka 90+ in a 15mph zone I dont come anywhere near crashing even .01% of that amount...I dont even know how she got to you to give you that scare lol
edit: oh and as to how to deal with this problem...find her mechanic, explain the situation to him and have him remove the starter from her car, then make sure she learns how to drive in some safe & secure environment where she isnt going to kill anyone (im 100% sure she will crash within the month if she is allowed to drive freely) until she understands how to control her car....people like these on the roads scare the shit out of me T_T esp if im on a motorcycle/scooter, since they arent paying attention and just about any impact will bring pain, a lot of pain

Not in California. Here, you can get a "permit" upon completion of driver's education registration(passing a written test), and cannot drive with a permit without a parent, guardian or licensed adult age of 25 or older. You can't get a real license until 18.
|
Go point out every single flaw in her driving, small or big.
Seriously, did she even take a road test?
|
if she's hot don't say anything, if she's ugly call her on it and find a hot friend who is a good driver next time..
but yeah in all reality tell her what she's doing wrong if it's dangerous because not only are you in danger but so is she.

In California you can get your Provisional License after having your permit for at least 6 months and with 50 hours or more of driving if your are 16, but you can't drive people who are under 20 or between the hours of 1 pm - 5 am alone, for the first year.
If you're 17 1/2 or older you can get your permit and then you can basically schedule your driver's test immediately after you pass the written test. You don't have the restrictions of the Provisional license in this case.

Are you fucking serious, they just hand out drivers licenses where you live? what the fuck...

In that situation... first chance you get you get out of the car. You do not get in with her until she can drive decently.... even if that means it takes years. If that doesn't send the message to her nothing will.

I very much doubt that there is any state where this is true. Definitely not where I live.

Yeah, I talked to her and she apologized. Yet, she still doesn't fully understand what she did wrong...... Think I'm going to be the one driving/avoiding her for quite some time until she gets better. I'm just worried she's going to hurt herself or someone else =/

You know, thats why you have to take at least 12(mandatory minimum, most people take more, around 20) driving lessons(of 45 minutes) with a state-appointed driving teacher in a driving school car with additional gas, brake and clutch pedals on the passenger seat side(which the teachers tend to utilize very often in the first 6 lessons) in germany(before you can take a shot at passing the practical driving exam, where there is some guy who is sort of superior to the driving teacher and everyone is super scared of because if he has a shot at failing you, he will and retaking the test is extra expensive). it really makes sense.
maybe you can take her to a driving safety course on closed grounds/big parking lot on sunday/big ass backyard and show her a few things. success not guaranteed.

I'd be curious what state you live in. Add Wisconsin to the list of states that isn't true. I didn't get my license until I was 18. I had to take a written test, then got a learner's permit that had very strict restrictions, and had to take a driver's test to get an actual license. I don't remember the restrictions exactly, but I don't think I was able to drive with anyone but a parent/guardian or designated instructor.
As for the OP, I don't know what I'd say other then the fact that telling her that her driving is extremely reckless and she'll hurt herself/someone. Hopefully it won't take an accident to wake her up to this, because from your account she's straight dangerous.

Bullshit. Not in any state I've been in. Now in some states there's less prerequisites to taking the tests, but you still take both tests.
I've taken people to get tested in Colorado and Texas, have family in Georgia and Illinois, and none of those states let you get by this way.
@OP: If you refuse to ride in the car with her driving enough times, she'll probably start being more careful. On the other hand, some people don't learn until they get into a couple of wrecks and get some tickets.
Other people never learn.
|
Chiming in for another state that forces you to do actual driving tests to give you a license.
Yo I would be freaking out. Pretty sure headphones while driving is illegal btw, I know it is where I live. Assuming that's true where you live as well, it'd make the whole headphones thing non-negotiable at least.
You only have to look at the blogs on this site of people being mad they got tickets for speeding while drunk to see that not everyone views driving with the same sense of "I could die if I'm not careful." The road is scary sometimes.

Yeah, but the responses to that guy were kind of refreshing, considering what driving is like these days. That guy got shredded so bad. It's always kind of funny when the mods decide a thread is so bad it doesn't deserve the mercy of immediate closure.

report her to her parents. She obviously doesn't deserve a car if she's driving with earphones.
Get out, as someone said, and don't get back in until she agrees. It's your life.

Make her pull over, tell her to gtfo of the car. Drive back home, tell her to study driving 101 and practice some more.

Wait, fucking seriously?
That is the stupidest fucking thing I have ever heard. Who came up with that? Who lets it continue? Why isn't there an outrage over this?
EDIT: after re-reading, it seems this is not true for all states. Which states IS it true for?

Did she have to take a driving exam? Not the written one, that one's easy as hell and I finished that one in literally two minutes.
I'm scared of driving now with people like that on the road.

The Dutch licence requires:
1. A series of lessons usually costing you about 2.000 USD 2. An theoretical exam 3. A driving exam.
These are not forgiving and you pay for each exam. Don't take it, no license. Time for the USA to adopt this method so kids learn to work for their license?

I was 18 when I got my license and I had to take the driving portion of the test and was actually criticized. Maybe it's just different in certain states..
As for the OP, maybe just sit down and talk to her and tell her about the way you felt riding in the car with her, but don't just come out and say "Wow you are a terrible driver."; and maybe even offer to give her tips and even lessons, like having you drive and ask her to reciprocate what you are doing back to you to make sure she understands at least the basics of driving.
She WILL get in an accident if she keeps this up, hopefully she values her life enough to listen to you.

In colorado if your 18 years old you can get your license as long as you pass the written test, no driving test needed -.-.
Also on the subject of earphones, i drive with mine in from time to time, bluetooth is crap so I use the apple ones with a mic. i can hear the road fine, however if she is using the earplug ones.... well then...
|
Im pretty sure the test here in NY is straight forward.
1. Take written test, receive driver's permit. 2. Do minimum of 6 hours in driving course lessons, usually about 200+ USD. 3. Schedule road test.

Really? Last time I dragged someone to get a license there, they needed to do both. Was a while back though. And he might have been 17, hard to remember who was what age when they got done with basic.

Damn I thought I had hit post. Basically wrote what torte said minus the talking to her parents part. Get out of there man don't ever ride with her again.

Phew, glad to be literally thousands of km away from your terrible friend driver. Although I'm living in Quebec atm and its comforting to know there is one less crazy driver to worry about.
|
If half of what you said is true, she'll be causing a crash sooner or later. Let's just hope she doesn't seriously hurt someone.
|
Doesn't sound like she's that terrible a driver but she sure as hell has no clue about any kind of rules the car is supposed to follow while driving. Buy her some sort of driving guide. With pictures that show her she has to stop at red lights, how to make a right turn, how to make a left turn, how to get into the proper lane before entering the intersection, how to change lanes and omg, just everything, she's clueless when it comes to rules, regulations and common sense.
|
Holy shit what is going on? Here you have to pass a theoretical test, which has 30 random of about 900 questions you have to be able to answer; then you can START your practical learning in driving school. You have to do atleast 15hours of driving, but about 25-35 is standard. After that you get into your driver's licence TEST, which requires you to drive for 45 minutes straight, in the city, on highway, basically everywhere. Also, you have to show that you are able to park backwards properly and to turn your car around on the street. After that, if you passed all of that, you get your licence, and not one second before.
|

Actually in gool ole 'Murica you still need to take a practical test. I don't know about all 50 states but definitely in the 2 where I have lived and about 10 other ones that I have friends in (this is both east and west coast). But yes after 18 you take a written test and a driving test and then you can get your license. Most people cheat the system by going to a DMV in some tiny suburb where the practical consists of driving on abandoned streets with no other cars around and "parallel parking'" between cars 100 feet apart. So it is much easier to obtain a drivers license then in some other places.

Man up and urge her parents to get her driving lessons

Lol great story. I once had a friend, whom started driving with no license (many variables prevented it), and i knew she had been driving for sometime. The first time i got in the car with her i was amazed at how bad a driver she was. Not nearly as bad as your experience, as she looked in the lane she was turning into and knew left from right. But my god, those fast turns, the slam on the breaks, the cutting off, the hitting of the curb! It was amazing.
Now i am the kind of person (and all my friends know this) that will tell you like it is. I dont sugar coat things 90% of the time because the truth, tho sometimes hurtful, lets people change it if said person does not like it. I expect the truth from people myself.
And from the moment i realized how bad of a driver she was i let her know in the car Lol. I gave her crap for it every time i was in the car with her until all of the sudden, one day, we were driving.... and it was A okay! To this day she claims she only drove bad with me in the car, for whatever reason lol. Good times.
But if this person drives as frightening as you describe, and i believe i saw you post you were from Washington state? that's scary because i live here lol. I would suggest avoiding driving with her, unless shes in the passenger seat. Just until she gets her act together and let her know thats why. But she did have to pass a drivers test, no effin way they just hand it over. Got mine when i was 18 and had to take the test. But the test is a joke depending on what DOL you went too.
