Well, I was tutoring for the first time today, and I don't know whether I'm just a horrible teacher, or the person who I was helping was just not getting it...

So, tell me if I suck at teaching or if the person was just... yeah.

Simple geometry question, more specifically, the Parallel Line Theorems and Postulates. Basically, the student had some trouble with proofs and whatnot. As we progressed through the session, I noticed basic flaws in the student's fundamentals. The student didn't know many of the basic postulates (Vertical angles, etc.)

So, I figured we'd only need corresponding angles for the lesson. This is how I went about explaining it. Try to picture it as I go on! Short lesson ahead.

Of course, I drew all of this stuff on a piece of paper.

+ Show Spoiler +
1. We've got 2 parallel lines a and b, both cut by transversal t.
2. When a is cut by t, an angle (1) is formed.
3. When b is cut by t, an angle (2) is formed.
4. Imagine that line b is actually just line a moved down a certain distance, because they are parallel.
5. Now, imagine line a, and imagine line b placed on top of it.
6. Where are angles 1 and 2? Are they the same?
7. etc. about why corresponding angles work.

Derp. I think I suck at teaching people stuff.

The song was nice. The geometry is not the average TL browsers area of expertise.
It's quite alright, goodbye for now.

How much experience do you have tutoring people in material like this? If not much then you probably suck at it through no fault at your own. It's very difficult to do this effectively.

edit: oh you said "for the first time" so yea you suck no offense

Yeah. Any tips on how to teach more effectively? Or does it just come through practice?

I actually liked your approach (the explanation on the piece of paper), I got it. Even though I didn't quite get point 5... on top of what should line a and b be placed?

btw, here's your piece of paper:

Edit: you mean "on top" in the sense of "higher in the coordinate plane"? That would actually make sense, lol.

I feel like the concept is too easy for people that already understand it for us to know whether your teaching method is good or not.
How does it feel knowing you wasted another 3 seconds of your life reading this again?

Lol I think that's how I thought of it too back when I first learned about parallel lines and stuff.

I guess it might be harder for people who can't visualize things easily.

I'm not a teacher or anything, but maybe do something like have him cut a circle out at each intersection and then have him stack them on top of each other and rotate 180 degrees and voila!

After reading this your explanation made perfect sense. It must be your student who is slow.
