I'm trying hard to balance University and SC2, i am a Sophmpre aerospace engineer major. I'm really not that smart i dont understand things the first time around and i feel like i have to put in many extra hours of work to keep a decent GPA. I played SC2 ALOT (Top 8 Masters 3000 games played) in my first semester of school my GPA was a 2.3 which wasn't terrible but defintley not where i wanted it to be so i did what i knew was taking up my time SC2. I did well the 2nd semester i made friends and i had a GPA of 3.1 which was up where i wanted to be.

But then summer hit and i thought i was done with SC but it pulls you back and now i am playing actively again in season 3. Its only been 3 weeks of school and i do play moderately >2 hours a day playing.

But the real problem is focusing, when im in class all i think about is starcraft. When im studying on the computer im really just surfing TL or facebook. I dont wannt drop SC2 i want to learn to manage my time between Starcraft/ school/ making new friends (i transferred)/learning to play the Bass/girls. I know i could do all of it if i could just focus on one thing at a time but starcraft just DOMINATES my life. Its not that i dont love starcraft its just i need some way to control it i dont want to be a pro gamer i just want starcraft to be an enjoyable hobby.

Even now i should be doing my essay thats due tomorrow but here i am on TL.

I even made a blog before this about it being my "final" post which was right around the time of Plexa's and i was like well i guess im doing the right thing if even PLEXA was quitting TL. But its true Starcraft is like a damn drug once you get a taste of it you dont go back. So now i just want to control it. Hopefully i can control my self and in a few months i'll update this to let everyone know how im doing even if you care/dont care.

I know what you mean! I'm not currently in school so I don't have that problem. I guess all I can say is prioritize. University is like...10000x as important as SC in terms of life potential. Easier said than done of course. But you seem to be honest with yourself so I'm confident you'll work it out somehow. Good luck!

i can kinda relate to what you're going through, because i've gone through this before. the key to focusing would be self discipline.

Watch the day9 daily where Day9 does ask me anything.

He talks about how he does whatever he wants, and he doesn't force himself to do anything.

That's bad! you must think, for then he would play starcraft all day.

But its more like this:
He gets home, he wants to play starcraft, so he plays starcraft, and then halfway thru a game he thinks about how he should do his homework so he X's out of the game and does his homework.

The other method(which is much much better, unless if you are similar to Day9 like i am, although i use this method too) is to just do the homework and studying for a class right after a class. Then you can't procrastinate and you just have to balance between SC2 and friends.

If it's necessary, don't be afraid to cut one time consuming aspect of your life out for more important ones. I've been in the same position before.

I just take my mind off SC by distracting myself with other things. For instance, watching the Harry Potter series.

It's funny because the same thing happened to me too. Like you, I also improved my grades last semester when i didn't play as much sc. I got bak into sc bw during the summer again and skool's started and I can't stop....

There's gonna be ppl that come into your thread telling you something along the lines of "if u can't prioritize ur time then u have far bigger issues" which is true but I understand that if u play compeitively, u can't just stand to play casually otherwise u won't be able to keep up. You win vs good ppl and u get confidence and u wanna keep playing to get better if ur a compeitior. Or the game is just fun and wanna keep playing.

If ur like what I just described then the only way out is to completely quit. It's gonna be very hard to try to balance sc2 and schoolwork because once you get on sc2 your not gonna want to get off. Then once you get off, on top of playijng sc2, u go look at fb and read tl then once it hits late at night u get around to doing ur homework..

Like I know for me, the only solution is try to find some way to quit this game becuz bw addiction eats up ur time, while smoking addiction eats up ur lungs. But for the college student, time is the most important thing to get stuff done which is why I need to completely cut out bw. I went on a rant here but I'm currently going through the same thing as you so I kinda know what ur talking about..it's tuff :/

Now that i thought about it though, I think the addictive personality is bad but I can't help it if I want to be the best at whatever I like doing by putting ton of hours of practice into it whether it be sc2 or sports or a musical instrument. I just wish i was addicted to my schoolwork lol.
We have competitive ladder, strong community, progaming in Korea going strong, perfectly balanced game..why do we need sc2? #1 ANTI-SC2 fan

Are you taking notes in class? I never really had to, but it always helped concentrating.
Also like every half hour i would just stop listening and give myself 5 minutes of free thinking. I'm not sure if that actually helps, but at least it made me feel better.

As for studying, print as much stuff out as you can and learn offline. And when thats not possible block access to sites like TL and FB.

Also having like 1-2 fixed days per week where you do nothing starcraft related might help.

My life is an endless series of obsessions. I got over my starcraft obsession, now I'm on chess.

I think about it all day long. When I'm in class, instead of listening to the lecture, I think "I can't wait to go listen to that chess lecture!"

That's probably a bad thing, but it's just my nature. When I don't have a current obsession running and I'm just thinking about life and shit, I feel like jumping off a bridge.

Honestly RIGHT now SC2 is the only game i find fun, i use to play a lot of FPS (CoD/Halo) but really they are just the same thing, react, aim and shoot. I feel like i've grown out of FPS. SC bring a new twist its a strategy that require the speed of an FPS game but the mind of a general. Thats why i love SC2 you can't just play it straight for 6 hours of gaming an BOOM your good. Its a slow steady progression of skill you learn and fix a mistake once a day.

Also the booming E-sports scene, its impossible to not read around and see how much attention SC is getting nowadays. I want to be a apart of it, i wanna be able to say 20 years from now i was there when the first huge E-sports movement in America happened at MLG.

But thank you for your post

True! i just got into Starcraft and although i don't play much because of work i can't stop thinking about it! which is weird because i find it the most infuriating game when i lose..
Last night i was half asleep because of some noise and my brain told me 1A to deal with it haha!
