Someone stole the wheels off my bike today. They were pretty good mountain bike wheels that have a simple snap-on and snap-off... but cmon. Are you serious?

edit: LOL

Just looked up my bike. It's $1400 new. I got it from a neighbor when he moved across the country.

Really should not have been locking that up downtown. Glad it was just the wheels now.

Yeah dunno. Worst part is this was the last night I was working nights - 9-4 from now on, and they were stolen around like 9 to 11 pm...

I basically need to get a lock for the wheels too now as the bike really is snap on/off wheels, and I have to lock my bike up there again as I still work there.

Anyway I reported the theft to building secruity/police and apparently they have cameras around. A coworker had his bike stolen too but apparently they couldnt make out who it was on the camera. We'll see what happens.

Its 3 sentences actually, a far cry from being a blog. Besides if little effort is placed on writing a blog, dont you think that by all thats just, the same should apply to the comments ?

What kind of lock do you use? I thought regardless of whether you use the U-lock or cord it's fairly standard to lock in the front wheel too.
How does it feel knowing you wasted another 3 seconds of your life reading this again?

That logic is so dumb. If one person makes a bad post, that doesn't mean everyone else should get free reign to shit all over the forums.

U-Lock, but only attached it to the frame. I only noticed a week ago that the wheels actually snap on/off fairly easily, and I never considered someone would steal the wheels. The bike was given to me by a neighbour when he moved, but I'm guessing it's worth $300-400+ considering it has some nice shocks.

I just remembered: the wheels have disc brakes. That probably increasing their value a lot.

Yeah quick release, I dunno too much about this stuff. Disc brakes on the wheels though.

Man, now I'm thankful that my parents made me learn to lock up the wheels when I locked up the bike - particularly the front wheel, because it's super easy to steal 99% of the time. The back wheel is usually more obnoxious, and they typically won't steal just 1 unless they can get both. From what I understand, the thieves typically sell the (presumably high-quality) wheels for dirt cheap afterwards.

Anyway, yeah I would have to agree with Travis that this is kind of ridiculous. Although, aren't mountain bike wheels sort of expensive? I dunno much about that kind of thing.

I did have a few bikes stolen when I was like 10 because I was too dumb to put them away (just left them in front yard lolol). It sucks..

If you really want to ban him from your blog you can click blogs in the top left (by your PM, Profile, and Posts) and scroll down. It has the option to ban any non-mod who has posted in one of your blogs from doing it again.

Sucks about your wheels. I've seen some bikes with stolen wheels in cities but they are generally the ones that look as though they've been sitting there for a while.

Yeah I'm definitely going to have to use two locks now. I'm just not sure if it's more expensive to buy two full wheels now or just buy a $100 bike and use that. Anyone have a guess on some cheap mountain bike wheel cost?

LOL

Just looked up my bike. It's $1400 new ($800 on kijiji). I got it from a neighbor when he moved across the country.

Really should not have been locking that up downtown. Glad it was just the wheels now.

I'm gonna buy a $100 cheap bike and use that for downtown biking, fix up this bike with new wheels when I get a better job and can afford it and use it for mountain excursions only.

Yea, this is pretty common. Like someone else mentioned you should get one of those longer locks that lets you wrap it through the wheels too. Thieves don't like to work hard so if you do that it will discourage more people from trying :p.

Yeah, this actually ended up happening a lot near/at my school before. People would come, and just steal the wheels off of bikes on the bike rack.

Hope you find some replacement wheels alright, and like others have said, use one of those long bendy locks and thread it through the wheels/frame. :p

There's actually a funny picture I saw before, of someone who used one of those, but just put it through the wheels and not the frame, and the picture was just of the two wheels locked to a pole, because someone stole the frame instead.

Damn sorry for you but don´t ever use snap-on snap-off wheels or saddles. A funny thing happend last week, when i walked to the subway there were like 10 bicycles hanging in different trees. Evidently someone had a really good time the night before xD

Who the fuck steals wheels?

I've had scrap metal guys come to our house constantly for metal (we were renovating).
When we stopped putting out metal (we were done renovating that part of the house), they stole our mailbox (it's metal).

I know, almost, your suffering.

Wheels can be pretty expensive. If you can, don't use quick release ... use the normal bolts. The rear wheels are normally more expensive than the front ones, but the front ones are easier to steal. If you can, you should lock the frame and front or back wheel to whatever post you're locking your bike to. Some people say to even take 2 locks and lock one wheel and frame with one lock and the other wheel with the other lock.

A lot of times thieves will simply avoid your bike if it looks safer (ie has two locks). Unfortunately that means more weight to carry since bike locks are the lightest things around.

Those things that hold the wheels in place are not actually part of the axle and you can buy them by themselves:

So after you replace the wheels, change to something that needs tools and does not have that quick release lever. I personally only use one lock and make sure to put it through the frame and the front wheel. I hope thieves are too lazy to steal the back wheel.
