Do you remember the flair of old-school RPGs like Secret of Mana and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past? Secret of Mana was the very first RPG I ever played and it’s close to my heart up to today. I will never forget the hours I spent playing the story. I had to visit a friend from school to play at his Super Nintendo. When I finally beat the Mana-Dragon I was so happy.

My favorite artwork of Secret of Mana.

The next generation of RPGs hooked me up as well. The Playstation was my favorite (not the N64), because it felt like it had a lot more RPGs to offer. I played all the Playstation Final Fantasy titles (excluding the remakes though) and both Breath of Fire sequels. The 3D graphics just gave the RPGs a new feel, especially when mixed with 2D sprites as seen in Breath of Fire 3, or Grandia. I just like the looks. Those reminded me of anime-gone-games.

Indeed sprites and 3D looked good!

See what I mean? Anime like character design.

The Playstation 2 was released and I got mine fairly late. I borrowed the one of my cousins and played Final Fantasy X, but that was about the last console RPG I played. I started to play more and more games online (i.e. Unreal Tournament). I also started playing online RPGs. I tried about a dozen games by now and they all have been a lot of fun, but from time to time I remembered the good old days.

Just two weeks ago I quit my last MMORPG. But this time I didn’t pick up a new one, I picked up one of them old Playstation RPGs. I booted my Playstation 2 and loaded Grandia for the first time in years. It took me a few days to adjust (I’m for real when I say that!), because I was so used to chatting while playing, or browsing around in between stuff. But now I feel just like in the old days. Why did I ever quit playing those games? They are much more relaxing!

Anyways, I'm going back to my TV.

Cheers

You've listed some solid RPGs. I approve and I can relate. The reason I quit those games is because I like multiplayer and RPGs are very solitary.

I remember back in the day all me and my brother would play is the old school console rpgs.

We still have a lot of them, probably 3000 dollars worth of old games lol.

Lufia for SNES and star ocean for PS1 were my two favorite rpgs, they don't make good console rpgs like they used to, thats for sure.

I was always a fan of that one where you were the big monkey. And the little monkey would help you out. The goal was to finish the obstacle course and collect bananas. I wish they would make more Monkey RPG's...

I guess somethings are just gone

Although I will always have my memories... Collecting bananas, throwing barrels, dodging bees.... Ah.. those were the days.

good old school jrpgs are a dying breed indeed
I think the only good classic jrpg to have come out in the last decade might have been sora no kiseki/Trails in the sky, the new route games like ff13 are taking are kind of meh to me, not terrible, but far too linear for my taste
When in doubt, just believe in yourself and press buttons

What?

You can say that about every single game in existence.

Oh my god. I forgot all about roleplaying the plumber.. That was so sick!!! And he could ride around on his green dinosaur! The best part of the plumber RPG, and one of the more confusing parts was when you grabbed the star, and suddenly you turned into some sort of god! DA DA DA DADADADADADADADA and everything you touch died. Oh how I miss my childhood...

Pretty sure it was a roleplaying game. the mario 3 and mario world games had some rpg elements in a more coherent and structured storyline, and donkey kong games, being already a mature mid 90's snes game had well developed story structure and presentation sequencing. key elements of the jrpg genre, though less rigorously applied on the time domain. Still, the categorical conditions are fulfilled, and hence it is correct to classify the game as was proposed. Meaning, your claim is incorrect.

Lufia is on my hitlist, as well as Chrono Trigger. I haven't played these two, ever. I also thought about getting a Super Nintendo on EBay, especially for the feel.

@Vlare I kind of get your point. Though Donkey Kong Country is labeled a Jump & Run game, it sure had a lot of RPG related parts. If you talk about Mario, there was actually an RPG made by Square on the SNES. I read about it last week.
