There are NOT that many! I always try to promote it among my girl friends but the main problem is when they have no clue about computers!! sigh...

Honestly, if SCII is your first RST... there WILL BE a learning curve.

Steps: Promoting SC2 among gf/ girl-friends

1)Show them the game, trailer, some matches and give them a brief overview of the play-style.
2)Give them a quick tutorial & help them with the campaign.
3) Some of my friends lose interest after this, because it's not their type of game. But! I never quit! hohoho
4) I always show them Day9 dailies, because they are fun to watch and you can learn from them.

5)After they got the main idea of the game, play with them 1v1 or 4v4s between friends , just for fun.
It is important to give her time to build a simcity and have enough time to explore the maps (it is funny but they learn so much from it).

I've learn that this only works if they show some interest at the beginning. There are some of them that enjoy watching SC2 matches and fully understands the game mechanics but they got no intention of playing it.
They usually fall in love with the community and try to get more involved.
It is a Win/Win in my opinion!

As co-founder of femFx, I know how hard is to get to know more girls or find a place with friendly people willing to help.
That said, I'm leaving #Team fem-Fx channel (NA Server) open to the public for any player looking for a friendly sc2 game

See you all tomorrow!

To be honest I think the steps for trying to get a female friend into sc2 aren't that different from getting a male friend into sc2 :p

Of course cultural influences will cause more girls (statistically) to lose interest than boys though! But we need to fight it.

Day 9 is pretty hardcore though. His motto is making you a better gamer...so its for people who are already dedicated. Maybe it would be better to show her Husky, unless she finds his verbal diarrhea irritating, in which case you could try HD, although he's also irritating for his forced humor.

In general I think the best way is to just play against them, and try to make it a fun experience. Maybe it'll catch on that way. But I like your other suggestions!

I think the best way to get anyone into SC is to just start off playing very casual games with them like big team games and some fun custom maps. It'll help the very new players to get used to basic unit control and production. Only once they start showing signs of wanting to get better should they look at competitive play.

I think it's starting to take off on it's own. I don't like to push anything on anybody. If they actually show interest to begin with. For instance, some girl asks me about my TL shirt I tell them and yank their chain. Seems to work. Got a few people to check it out on their own anyway.

Random piece of trivia:

Did you know that there is a Skype group for female Starcraft 2 players? I just found out about it this weekend. There are over 140 girls in the group.

Some of them are incredibly hot....

In fact, that's something that always sticks out in my mind at these major LANs.

There are far more dudes that attend than there are females, but the girls that show up are almost always good looking...

Guess hot chicks just really dig SC2

The main difference between trying to get a girl into sc2 and trying to get a guy into sc2 is convincing the girl that the game is worth all of the shit she will have to hear from the 'community' about her gender.

One thing I would add is that once they have a basic understanding of the game, showing someone an MLG/Dreamhack/etc is really exciting. You realize how many people love the game and how amazing the tournaments and players are.

This may or may not result in the girl playing starcraft and spending less time with you.

I think the main problem is that girls in general are not really interested in computer stuff. I am the only "techky" girl out of the group. The rest, as soon as they can play with their iphone and ipod, they are happy.
@radscorpion9: I think it is because I love how passionate Day9 is about SC2
@djcube : That's a great idea!
@MrBitter : Yes, we have this group on FB and skype and we are over 140+ girls. We also have the same channel called Sc2girl+boys if you are interested ^_^. We are trying to get together and attend MLG orlando and Providence, so you will see more and more girls going to these events! :D
@RedJustice : That's a good idea and you are right. For the same reason we have this sc2girls group. So people can start get to know the game, the community with out getting trolled.

Sc2 community is getting better!

It is really fun to play SC2 with your gf/bf

Let people do what they want to do. If girls aren't interested in SC2 or gaming that's not a bad thing, I think trying to force people to like the same things you do really makes you come off as obnoxious. I don't get the whole hubbub about gamer girls anyway, I don't find a girl more attractive because she plays video games I guess because I typically enjoy playing them by myself. I think an adult female who has no gaming experience probably won't be interesting and I doubt an adult male with no gaming experience would either.

My girlfriends interest in video games pretty much ends at seeing me play them and asking questions and that's alright I guess. If you really wanted to get someone interested in SC2 or BW or whatever I'd play up the E-Sport aspect of it and downplay the actual gameplay. Playing the game might be intimidating but watching it something anyone can enjoy if they know the very basics. I got interested in competitive BW before I ever played the game much myself.

Minority? Yes. Completely devoid everywhere? No. It all depends on where you are.

As an undergrad I was hard-pressed finding anyone who played starcraft.

As a graduate student at a different university I joined the csl team which is lead by a girl with another four girls active on the facebook page (which has about 20 regular posters). 2 or 3 girls show up to the lans that have 10-15 people.

My girlfriend also plays SC2 and a couple times a week we'll play 4v4 on skype with two of my younger brothers.

It's a game that brings people together. I've stopped promoting it as a fun escape and emphasized the community with a lot of like-minded individuals. Other than that, it's up to the other person no matter how well you sell it.

Guys find their way around. They don't ask for help, they will figure it out, discover the game and play the game

We are different. Think differently and do things differently.

Easy example:
Scenario #1
Me:" Hey do you know sc2"?
random guy:" Not really, I read about it, but haven't play it." " Maybe I'll try it out"
or!
random guy:"Yea! Im master!!"

Scenario #2
Me:" Hey do you know sc2"?
random girl:" what?"
me:" its a pc game"
random girl:" ohh I don't know."
me:" would you like to know what it is?"
random girl:" nah... do you have facebook?"
or
random girl:" I don't really like computer stuff"

There are exceptions!! Ofcourse!! Im pretty sure our sc2girls group has the majority of that exception ^__^
or maybe not.

This is just my point of view ^_^

Goes back to what I said in my first post. I never force anything on anyone. If it doesn't tickle their fancy then I leave it be. If they are truly interested and want to learn about it then it's something we can share. If not, then I don't make a big deal about it. Don't have to share everything. :D In fact, I find it healthy.

I can say the same about religion. One of my best friends is Muslim. I respect his values and beliefs as long as he doesn't try to convert me or reinforce his beliefs on me and we get along great.

It's up to a person's personality. If they want to appease you, they'll try it. If they think it's stupid, you can't change that. My boyfriend got me into it because I'm a bit of a sci-fi nerd. I mean, there's a chance I'd've learned about it without him, but I don't think so.

Most likely not.

One time I managed to fool one of my gf's into playing it (she was really into sci-fi and gaming too). Anyway, she asks me to tell her stories all the time, so one day I decided to improvise the single player campaign from Brood War. She got a real kick out of it and then I told her, well.. you can actually play it. Her eyes lit up. It was a bumpy ride considering she's never played a RTS in her life. I thought it was cute. :>

I got into SC2 because my boyfriend started tutoring me on it. Now I'm trying to claw my way into diamond... so I can eventually become my bf's 2v2/training partner.
In exchange, I got him into console FPS. :D

I wasn't going to post here but what the hey. Conceptually I got in to SC for very similar reasons, when I was 10-11 my stepdad introduced me to the story and I loved the Zerg and it kinda stuck with me when I grew up. The only reason I bought SC2 on release was because I saw it and wanted to see more Zerg and the story. Looking for help on the missions I found this site and enjoyed watching the streams/tournaments and gradually got in to playing myself and this is the only RTS I've ever played (generally I prefer RPG's).

I love watching MLG and sYz-adrenaline play when hes at home, I've just never had any real interest in playing competitively. I like the campaign more than online for no particular reason I guess. Though adrenaline is starting to teach me more so I might start playing more online. For the most part though, I like watching and running tournaments.

As for getting more girls to play and all, its something they have to have an interest in before I think. Not Starcraft specifically, but gaming. If they don't game at all or don't even like using computers for something other than Facebook, good luck getting them to play SC2 or BW lol

It is RTS.... Real Time Strategy game. Not RST Real Strategy Time. Other than that, totally agree. Also, lol @ MrBitter spending his 2000th post here :3. rated 3/5. Would've rated 5/5 if you hadn't misspelt RTS.

edit: As for how I started with Star Craft(BW), I watched my bro playing it and immediately loved the goons and the funny sounds protoss units make. I constantly annoyed him as a young 4 year old by making him click on the probes and other units again and again until they finished their round, then I would ask for what building made the sound I just heard(Forge sound is so awesome :3) and he would say "what?" thinking it was an attack he missed ^^. One time I even saw him get attacked on a map he made by the computers trying to do a 1v3 computers on it PvPPP. It was actually balanced from what I remember seeing. Even though he sucked I just loved the game and when I got into it and we played a LAN game I trumped him in my first game. Why? I was reading the recommended threads here in the BW Strategy section for years lol. He face palmed shortly after I said gg.

Show her SC parody songs, tell her about the storyline, show her some cut-scenes, hype up one of your favourite players etc. That's how I got into SC

I got into SC because my ex bf had me play it. I had heard of it before and played a game against an a.i. before, but I didn't like it so much. This time around I liked it better, though I tend to simcity a bit too much :p. I kind of liked playing in teams with his friends too. But we broke up and I cannot borrow his account for the occasional game any more, obviously :p And I'm rather reluctant to get one myself, because I would hate laddering :p I'm no good at all at competitive games, it makes me too nervous. So now I just hang around here and watch some streams ^^'.

Oh edit: Why I liked it better pretty much had to do with the way he had me play it. The first person who had me play SC was very impatient, and constantly yelling what buttons I had to press. And then when some marines came up to my base he pretty much started to play the game for me because I was like "aaah what do I do what do I doooo? D: "
My ex just pretty much let me do things by myself, and gave me advice. He wasn't stressing over whether I would lose the game or not, he just let me figure things out and told me a little bit of things I could do. I managed to beat the more difficult levels of a.i. pretty fast, within an hour or so ^^ I was quite happy because I never really played games like SC before, and he was proud of course :p
