First of all, yes I come from a well-to-do family with parents who love to buy gifts.
Now, I will be turning 18 in October and am looking for gift ideas for the 'big' 18th birthday. Computer parts and accessories are not an option, I'm maxed out on those.
Some things I've been thinking about are things like
New 1-person backpacking tent
New computer chair
New quality backpacking sleeping bag
I'm a big time sc2 boy and a big time hiking enthusiast. This past summer I spent 2.5 weeks hiking the John Muir trail from Yosemite to Mt. Whitney. Other interests are road biking and eating!
I know this is a weak blog, but if anyone has any ideas or examples of what they got for their 18th birthday I would be very appreciative. I'm going to college in fall 2012 if anyone has college-themed ideas.

New computer chair sounds pretty good if you are sitting infront of the monitor a lot. Remember to ask something that is _high quality_. And you better test it out first!

if it is your thing, a vacation to a fun country like canada or australia would be fun. pit tickets to a concert of choice is another great one.

On my eighteenth birthday I believe I got a nice watch. I would recommend asking for one of those. maybe ask for it to be engraved?

Honestly, I'm 17 right now. I haven't had a birthday party since I was 13 or so, from lack of friends/things to do/motivation. However, as a Big 18 gift, I would try to milk what you could before college. Also, think about if what you get can be brought to college, as a reminder of home. A nice chair is a possibility.
