Hi everyone,

So I wanna buy a new computer, thing is I don't know too munch about this stuff and I don't want to get hustled.

Here's the build I came up with

http://tinyurl.com/44xk3yd

I want something hella quick but basic that I'll be able to upgrade in the future if I ever feel the need to. The computer will primarily be used for database management (postgreSQL), multi-tasking, video recording/screen capture and some gaming (SC2). So concerning the video/graphics card, I only need something capable of handling SC2 properly (the one I have currently selected might be overkill??)

I want to install the OS (Windows 7), my database thing, SC2 and a few programs on a SSD flash drive to make sure everything is quick and optimal, I don't need any additional storage other than that.

Any opinions or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you for your time.

Good thing you asked. Core i7-950, when factoring in motherboard costs, is more expensive than the i7-2600k and is much worse. To be honest, it doesn't really sound like you'll be needing the hyperthreading either, so an i5-2500k would be just as good and much cheaper.

Core i7-950 is similar to i7-875k in performance. See here:
http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/core-i7-2600k-990x_9.html#sect2
http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/288?vs=100

If you're not overclocking the CPU, a much cheaper socket 1155 motherboard and an i5-2500 (or i5-2400) would be just as good as the i5-2500k, saving more money. If overclocking on socket 1155, you need a P67 or Z68 motherboard.

Power supply is a good model but way overkill.

Kingston SSDNow V+ is okay but not that good. Certainly it's not worth $276 for 128GB.

HD 6850 is enough for SC2 on ultra at 1920x1080, so yes 6950 is overkill.

Case is also way overkill and also huge, but maybe you want that?

In general NCIX's configurator is not that good. Just select items from the normal web store and put in the $50 assembly option if you want that. edit: or maybe that's what you did? I forget how it looks like

lolololol what ?

More seriously, I don't know how or what overclocking is but I guess it improves performance so if it's easy to do than yeah, sure, I'll overclock whatever...

So far from what you told me, I guess I'll go down to a i5-2500.

NCIX's support told me that with the build I had selected I would need at least 580 and that 620 was reccomended. They probably tried to trick me into paying more tho, what would you recommend If I go down to a i5-2500 like you said ?

It was the only SSD that was least than like 240GB and I don't need that munch... Would 80GB be enough for everything I want ? I don't think so, I heard just the OS is like 60gb... What would you reccomend ?

Ok cool, more savings.

I don't specifically want everything, like I said I just want something that I can upgrade in the future like add more memory, another SSD, maybe a Blu-Ray writer stuff like that...

I didn't even know that was an option lol, I'll look into that.

Thank you for your time kind sir.

1) First of all, if you don't know what overclocking is, just don't do it. The i5-2500K is a very cost effective CPU, and I'd recommend it. Not overclocking also gives you the option to buy a cheaper motherboard.

2) Honestly, you could run all that stuff off of a 500W PSU, although I personally wouldn't. Besides, you can get a MUCH better price for a 600W than $84.

3) The OS isn't anywhere near 60GB, dunno who told you that. My OS only takes up 12. The SSD can just run your OS and most used programs, just get a standard HDD for storage beyond that for a cheaper option.

4) Yes, a 6850 will easily run SC2.

5) The case will only affect your option of an SSD and Blu-Ray writer, and even then, a cheap $30 mid-tower will easily suffice.

6) Why buy Norton when you can get AVG free that does the same thing and uses less system resources?

Good luck and have fun building your PC!

Ok thanks, I'll get AVG, a smaller SSD and look for a more affordable Power Supply as well.

But what about my motherboard ? If I'm getting the i5-2500k with the HD 6850 card, what motherboard would you recommend ?

Also there's all kinds of Radeon HD 6850 which one should I look for ?

Are you really set on a SSD because you can get 1TB HDD for like $100.

Actually I just saw a deal on Newegg for a 3TB HDD for $120.

Also, I have a HD 5850 and can run SC2 on ultra(even though I run it on high) so the 6850 should run it brilliantly. I would get the 6850 with the fastest core clock, there isn't much difference between all the different ones, just different manufacturers so just get one from an established/reliable company.

Yes sir, I already have another computer and an external hard drive for storage. I want an SSD to run sh*t fast.

Ok, I'll pick a company that supports eSports or something

I really don't think overclocking is necessary for what you're doing, but it certainly won't cost more than the current build to allow for that.

NCIX also lets you price match with competitors.

Put these things in your cart now and save them, since new deals start every Wednesday. Then again, there's nothing too special this week, so next week is not going to be worse most likely. If they're saved, then apparently the prices are locked down even if you don't yet purchase.

By the way there's no way your original build would have taken over 400W even if you were trying to burn it down, unless you overclocked a good bit. This one would use much less power. The power supply listed below is a rebrand (made by same company based on same design and pretty much same parts) of the Seasonic S12II you were looking at earlier. The Crucial M4 is a decent step up from the Kingston SSD.

I will name my first child after you sir.

Edit: Just added everything together and I'm saving close to 600$ with your build. Sick. I'll probably order it tomorrow, just waiting for a few opinions from some friends.
