I feel this picture doesn't look right. People should have to earn the money the spend. However I'm not sure how we would come up with a general agreed upon standard for "earning and deserving money".

But yeah, the point I'm trying to get is that the amount of money a person has should represent how much good they've done for other people.

Sorry Mother Theresa. It doesn't work that way. Whether or not you believe it, life isn't fair and the people who get these sort of benefits don't owe anyone anything. This is how the parents want to teach their children or rather make it easier for them because of how hard it was for them back when they were going through whatever cycle of their life.

Here's something to ease your soul. Guess who they are "giving" their money to when they earn it.

Their children.
Guess where the money of their children that they earn go to: their children.

It's beneficial, just within the family and those we love and care.

Capitalism doesn't work as you wish.

You can just remove the "as you wish", that'll do.

I was going for a mix of: "You wish that's how capitalism worked" and "That's not capitalism works".

I see no reason why children shouldn't inherit the money their parents made, if that's the decision the parents make with the money. If I can give all my stuff to my friend John, why shouldn't I be allowed to give it to my son?

No, I think inheritance is necessary. If someone raises their children to be spoiled brats who waste away the family fortune, that's not my problem. It's a terrible waste, and I'd wish that I were in there position that I might do better by it, but that won't lead me to restrict other people's freedoms.

"the rich get richer and the poor get poorer"

I live in an incredibly wealthy area surrounded by fancy cars, big homes and spoiled kids. I'm not rich, and I would consider my family poor. There's nothing wrong with inheriting money. I wish I had money to inherit.

actually... im pretty spoiled myself. Maybe it's guilt that's motivating me to post this topic.

So in your ideal society OP, would charity be illegal? Donations are unearned after all...seems like a very harsh world that you want to live in, in any case. Supporting others isn't evil, and earning money isn't everything in life.

this doesn't really apply to people that require charity, but more of people in the middle class... yeah.

Fairness and freedom. And a lack of any viable alternatives. I feel it's alright for people to spend money on whatever they want to get it from wherever. But it makes me feel bad for society, but that's not any of my business.

Money....

What a great song!

As for the OP, please make a point.

To do that you need to define "good they've done for other people". You also need to rationalise giving someone's hard earned cash to people that person has nothing to do with. I guess you support lower taxes for philanthropists then...

The idea of a system where people couldn't transfer status and wealth to their children is absurd. I can hardly imagine it, unless you were to put people into a collective structure and to abolish the family unit.

People need motivation to make money, preventing them from passing on their money demotivates them to make it, which decreases their contributions and utility to society.

I think the larger problem is that rich people are gaining more wealth proportionally. Higher taxes for higher incomes seems to make sense to me as a way to counteract this movement. Maybe I just don't like the idea of powerful corporations.
I think in our modern age technology has evolved to become more addictive. The things that don't give us pleasure aren't used as much. Work was never meant to be fun, but doing it makes us happier in the long run.

Money is only a tiny part of a complex economic system for regulating the distribution of resources amongst members of a society. For the most part, this system is a work in progress and has been for the past 5000 years. The OP shows incredibly naivety by oversimplifying such a complicated issue.

The system isnt perfect which is why a guy like Brad Bitt can gets paid sums like 20 million dollars for pretending to be someone else in front of a camera. In this case, the people behind the whole movie industry have all figured out how to maneuver within this economic system so as to accumulate massive amounts of wealth.

What I would advise the OP to do is to stop complaining and instead try to figure out how you can work within this system(or outside it if necessary) to draw some of this money to you. Figure out how to exploit it, do whatever. Open a church and get some gullible suckers to come pay you to save their souls. Open a bakery...just figure something out.

Not saying its always true, but lots of $$ is generally related to people who actually do provide value to others.

Don't begrudge the child their station; they didn't choose it. This goes both up and down. They might get to spend a lot now but where does that leave them down the road?

Individual freedom and liberty is intrinsically tied together with wealth redistribution. It is more important than how much money individual people have, in a developed society where essentially everyone has enough to eat etc.
