The last time I visited China was five years ago, due to high-school induced workloads/activities during the summer. Five years ago, YouTube was a newborn, no one I knew had a facebook account, and twitter was equally nonexistent. I knew well ahead of time what the great firewall entailed, but I had a few unpleasant surprises today. After finally getting on sub-DSL hotel internet, my VPN decided to fail after about 10 minutes (which were spent trying to get facebook to believe that I was actually who I claimed to be).
I figured I would at least try to enjoy the portion of the internet that remained uncensored, so I decided on just trying to use TL instead. Streaming prime time and Chinese time zones intersect quite nicely, so I figured I would try to watch something (now on a much better connection). That was when I realized justin.tv was also blocked T_T. How does that make any sense?
I checked out the last great-firewall blog entry, but it seems like those remedies (at leas the free ones are no longer relevant). Any ideas are welcome!

Yeah, it's a pretty big pain in the ass, even with VPN's. First of all, the internet is as slow as a rat's ass sputtering through an ocean of steaming donkey shit. Secondly, VPN's slow down even the meager amount of internet speed you have, making going on Facebook or Youtube almost impossible (had to wait around 1 hour to get a 6 minute video to load).
If you're behind the Great Firewall, it's best just to live without those sites you frequent in the US. Unless you're attending some top tier Chinese university; I heard Shanghai Jiao Tong has pretty fast internet...

I found out that by changing my DNS server to google's public DNS I can at least get the VPN to cooperate enough for facebook :D... no twitter though

Er...

Just something I saw. But a lot of people have been complaining on the forums about justin.tv being blocked in China.

I love seeing this happen to people. Which is precisely why I don't have facebook to get my ass bitten.

while I was there, I downloaded a copy of Freegate, which worked ok if speed wasn't particularly an issue...you'd never be able to stream something though. I got sick of the really slow speeds and ended up paying for a subscription for Express VPN, which worked very well. I ended up keeping it cause the price was pretty good and I have other uses for a VPN for my work in internet marketing. Here's the blog entry where a bunch of people gave me other advice for hurdling the wall.

Oh LOL. I haven't used proxies in a LONG time, and I'm sure that anything I knew would be blocked in China.
But what else is blocked in China? I never really heard much other than justin.tv.

Pretty much all of your big American social networking websites are blocked.

Kpop discussion thread is such a bore to read here because I can't watch any of the videos. Youku is not the greatest substitute
Yeah there's really not much to do other than VPN now...

@Loser777: I feel your pain. After 5 years in China, I am well armed against the great firewall. I have 3 VPN ready at most of the time. Two are paid VPN, and one of them was exclusive IP so I can watch streams and live tourney.
In some occasion when all of my 3 VPN expired or died, I feel like I am isolated with the world. Open some thread to see a blank square instead of a Youtube video, or click on any stream just to get a bigger black square is got damn hopeless.
Will be out of China soon, return to Vietnam where only Facebook is blocked, lol.
One more thing, You can't not buy paid VPN anymore on taobao.com, it looks like the gornverment block all the VPN selling as well. Quite difficult to obtain a decent VPN now even if you want to pay.

I'm in China too, right now. Gmail fails half the time, and youtube is blocked entirely, obviously.
I'm just glad to have internet right now. The internet here's been down for about 2 weeks because lightning did like 4k dmg to the dsl modem, and several families got their motherboards fried. Rural China kinda fails still.

I just got twitter working! Hopefully this VPN stays together long enough to last me the trip (it's capped at 1GB, so I'm trying to be conservative in my usage).

1GB... that's brutal. How long's the trip?
I guess I'm never gonna visit China. No Youtube videos... <;A;>

I mean it's not like my 20mbps line in the States, but it's beyond passable for me! .99mbps is still eons faster than dialup.

hidemy.biz and aniscartujo.com are working for me right now.. neither work for facebook but aniscartujo.com works for youtube and i use hidemy.biz for torrent sites.. for facebook i use securitykiss VPN which is free and not that limited

What you can try next time you go to China is just setup a VPN server at your home, then you can connect from chine -> home -> non blocked internet. The downside is you have to let your computer run 24/7 but you don't have to pay for subscription fees. Also using a custom DNS server like google dns is ofc a good idea.

Freegate is fine for facebook / twitter / any non bandwidth heavy website.
Youku is even better than youtube for BW VODs, chinese uploaders are really fast (almost real time upload).
If you want to watch BW streams, http://yaoyuan.com/live.php is the way to go. Smooth stream and decent casters.
