I have a dilemma. I type with one one finger on each hand and hence when I play sc2 I only use my index finger for every hotkey/command(not counting pinky for when I shift)
Should I start somehow getting out of this style(which I have been doing for years) because im sure it hampers my eapm. Do any pros only use one finger for the left hand commands?

You should learn how to properly type with all of your fingers, this will allow you to break your bad habit much easier as well, if it hampers your actions then you should fix it!

This...if you're disabled with literally only 1 finger than do your best in owning scrubs with all their fingers (I'm sure there's satisfaction in that), but it's time to learn to type my friend.

Playing high level of SC2 using one finger? no unless you have got some god like speed finger. I wouldnt say you cant play with one finger but if you mean GM level then i doubt you can.

I cannot answer your question but I will tell you a related story:

I used to play WC3 with only 1 finger. Once I learned how to touch type with all fingers, my WC3 APM increased along with my skill.

I would learn how to touch type and then play SC2 once you do. Two benefits you will see are:

1) Higher SC2 apm
2) Healthier typing habits

that would be pretty difficult if you ask me, but its always possible to learn to type with more than one finger, hell you could probably just learn to play with your entire left hand withouut learning to type with your entire hand

Really I'd recommend just learning to type - in today's world it's such a useful skill.
That said, if you're having that hard of a time doing it, you could try switching to a grid layout. You'd still need to use multiple fingers, but you're not having to find keys throughout the keyboard, since they're basically all within reach of your hand when it's just sitting there on the keyboard.

I don't mean to sound offensive, but if you're too lazy to learn how to use the rest of your fingers, you're going to be too lazy to practice ALOT to become a pro gamer.

To answer your question, no it's not possible.

The pros do not use one finger, but some do have low apm(off the top of my head, axslav or so only has about 70 something avg apm, so if you can match that/ are efficient with it, it shouldn't matter as much.

When I first skimmed this, I thought you only actually had one finger on each hand o.O

But you do need to use more fingers, maybe if you're really bad, play some fps that uses wsad to move to get used to using others

Heh, I don't really understand how people can't take the time to at the very least learn how to type with all their fingers. You don't need insane WPM or anything but proper typing technique doesn't take long to learn.

It would be greatly beneficial not just for your play but for other computer activities to learn to utilize the rest of your hands, just take it slowly and you will definitely see it pay off soon.

Maybe try some Nexus Word Wars, it's an Sc2 Custom map that relies on typing quickly.

This is how I type for the most part. It's how I have always typed, though I used to be even worse about it.

I was quite good at brood war, and I am alright at sc2 with little time/effort invested. But let me tell you, this typing style is of HUGE detriment and it will be very difficult to play with a high apm. Sorry, that's just how it is.

And actually to be honest, my typing got a little less reliant on "just 2 fingers" because of me taking brood war seriously. I had to develop better use/control in some of my other fingers.... but it never got good I was just too conditioned in how I typed.

i am sure he's exaggerating.. if he's like me then what he means is that 90% of his typing is done with his pointer fingers.

and ppl might be amazed at how high of a wpm you can actually have typing like that.

He probably means efficient apm, it's not used in sc2, but it was used in bw.

I had this habbit too for a long time, the best way to practice typing with more then 1 finger is playing games which require you to press more then 1 button at a time, with Starcraft 2 for example you could basically play with pressing only 1 button at a time, ofcourse you would suck alot, but with a FPS game for example it requires you to press WASD (To walk), R for reloading and Q for example to switch weapons quickly, an MMO could also help with this.

You can probably hit diamond and MAYBE low masters with 1 finger, but realistically you are not going to be able to do as much as you need to. Simple scenario. How do you a-move 2 control groups of units, while macroing? Do you move your index finger and 1-a-2-a and then 3aaddd?

Because I played fps's for so long, for the longest time I hit all hotkeys with either middle or index finger. I could hit 5 but that's about as far as I could stretch. I hit a wall somewhere around high diamond where I just needed more hotkeys, and thus I spent about a week learning to hit 1 with my ring finger. Suddenly I could reach two more hokeys with relative ease, and could improve my control by that much while still retaining my macro, in addition to speeding up a bit because my fingers spend less time travelling.

Long story short - learn to type properly and you'll get a lot faster, guaranteed. None of the pros I've seen use one finger, or even two to hit hotkeys. They all use 3, and in some cases 4.

How long did it take you to type your post?

Two finger typing on TL should be bannable.

If you two finger type do you look at the keyboard for every hotkey? That basically is wasting your "eye" apm too. You should use every glance for the screen not the keyboard.

Learn to type (ltt) so you can learn to play (ltp).

I would say it should be possible to get into diamond with using only one finger on the keyboard... I don't know if you consider that high level play or not... but that's like top 12% or so. Key is, you'd have to be master level player to get that high, and the large handicap would cripple one's ranking.

Main problem would be setting and using control groups (which would be impossible), which is very important.

The other huge problem with using only finger, is it also results in not knowing exactly where each key is, making reaction time slower (aside from the slow reaction of always having to move around fingers). With a full hand on the keyboard, the fingers will be mapping the keyboard, allowing any key to be accessed easily without looking at the keyboard.

just as arrow keys WASD, jump/shoot/etc. are memorized and readilty pressable in other types of games like platformers and shooters, the major hotkeys used to play SC2 should also be memorized and readily-pressable.

Nexus word wars is a fun sc2 typing game that can be used to practice typing skills, but might be hard to play random pubs without friends.

That is how I do it >.<

Thanks for the advice guys! I'm going to try really hard to get the touch typing down pat using some programs/type games and then I hope itll translate to better sc2 skill ^_^

I don't understand why you don't just learn to type. It will take more practice to get good doing it the wrong way than learning the right way...

I call BS. Maybe you mean 2 fingers (1 on each hand), but even then I'd say that extremely unlikely.

You know you might be able to use SC2 to learn to use all of your fingers, I learned to touch type from playing WoW for a couple years a long time ago, and sort of just picked up touch typing from trying to talk while raiding without wasting much time.

I type even faster than that with 2 fingers, though I do use my left thumb for space bar.

high level no, but u can still play anyways. i would recommend slowly starting to incorporate other fingers and get used to it gradually, for the sake of your own enjoyment at the very least.

Really doubt it, and if I were you I would learn how to touch type before trying to play 'high level' SC. Makes using the computer A LOT easier.

I typed with my 2 point fingers only mostly but I'd use my pinky for shift and such. I'm not completely using 2 fingers, but close to it. With BW and sc2, that improved a lot though. If you find yourself in Bronze, as you naturally get better at the game, your typing will use more fingers/gain speed as well. It's not something you should consciously think about as it will improve naturally. Also, My WPM is around 90. Now, I use 4 fingers mostly. sometimes, 6...Overall, just play.. It will improve over time naturally.

It honestly will not take you too long to learn and get used to typing better. I recommend typing a good long blog about it while only using good typing habits, It couldn't hurt.

Ahh that would make kind of a cute story (assuming you have all fingers but just use the one on your left for keyboard actions of course since that would be sad if all you had is one :/ ) that your learning to play by using 1 finger to command stuff. Learning to type was hard for me as a young kid in school but I have one tip, get a cover for the keys so you can better learn them, for some reason that orange key cover is the one thing my mind associates with me learning to type. Good luck dude, you'll be using all fingers in no time with some typing practice I'm sure!

I actually type with mostly two fingers, but I play games with my whole hand. I never learned how to type properly, but I learned how to hunt and peck at an insane speed without looking at the keyboard by playing Nethack and MUDs when I was growing up. It's strange because I come closer to proper typing when I'm gaming than when I'm actually typing.

Mind you, I suck at Starcraft, but I think that's got more to do with lack of practice, I never play more than a couple games a week.

How old are you? If you're older than 10 I think you should definitely know how to type with all your fingers. There are programs on the Internet you can use to improve your typing skills. If you want to be successful at Starcraft you must use the keyboard quickly and efficiently.

If you really want to get good, I suggest you change your habits. It is just a matter of devotion and practice. However, if a blind guy can play BW, you can easily reach master rank by only using one finger:
