I sometimes see people making threads asking for help with gifts (weddings, birthdays, etc). I am in need of help with something slightly different.

I am going to a friend's house for dinner for the first time (edit: this friend's house for the first time... not the first time ever going anywhere for dinner lol), and I want to bring with my a gift for their baby (I assume that's expected). He and his wife have a little girl who is more than 6 months old but less than a year old (I forget when she was born to be honest). How do I go about buying a gift for her?

I'm... not even sure where to start. She's too young to read and I don't know what size she is since I haven't really seen her before... so I can't buy clothing. I don't know what she already has or doesn't have... I know if I try to buy something that it seems like she would need, then I would invariably buy something she already has and feel like an idiot.

How exactly do I go about this?? As a last resort I will just have to ask my mom who specializes in this sort of thing... but I'd rather not lol.

Possibly related: I currently have some credit at Kohl's... would they have anything?

Do you know what cartoons she likes, wait can you even enjoy cartoons at that age? Anyway I'd guess something for when she gets a bit older wouldn't go amiss.

Buy her a random plushie. Cheap, works for every kid and the parents won't hate you for buying their child a drum set.

Everyone buys stuffed animals and stuff...
Baby clothes are often sold by the age like 6-9months etc. So you can get clothes that way since you know her age. Babies always need more clothes.
Also just because she can't read doesn't mean you shouldn't get books. There are lots of really cute baby books around and you can get the soft ones that babies can chew on ^^. Also, those bathtub books are awesome too.

It's the thought that counts with presents. Something fun or cute is always good, and if buying clothes then always buy them for a little bit older than they are currently. Probably avoid something too practical since they will have the stuff they actually need already.

these look good

My sister's kids had things like this which kept them entertained for ages.

Something like a nightlight/baby-mobile/relaxing baby music is good. You never know what a baby will respond to, but one of these things might be what get's her to go to sleep.

starcraft 2 box should do it. Train them young, to become a pro later!

haha but besides that, when my brother had kids and i was going to bring a present i always just got one of those pluche(not sure if word) dolls (you know, teddybear kinda things). I mean younger then 1year, they're basically useless so cant really give them a proper gift. After they turned 3 i started getting them puzzle things which they really enjoyed

Buy her something that's innocent now but gross when she thinks about it in 15 years so that she can post about it on the internet and fit in.

Having taken care of a good number of children here's what you should NOT get them:

Clothes (at this age). They grow way too fast, and the best way to cloth a child is just to trade with other moms with young children, unless you are ridic rich and don't care.

Toys that make NOISES. Omg her poor parents will be driven mad by that little telephone that is so cute when it rings the first time, and so fucking terrible when it rings for the eleventythousandth time two months later.

Things you SHOULD get them:

Children's books, always a fairly cheap, easy, and safe alternative. Stuffed animals kind of, but there's a limit to how many stuffed animals you're gonna want, and not so much with books.

Excellent baby/children's books:

Goodnight Moon
The Little Engine that Could
Runaway Bunny
Paddington
Blueberries for Sal
Curious George
Where the Wild Things Are
Dr. Seuss (any of them <3)
Amelia Bedelia
Click Clack Moo: Cows That Type
Guess How Much I Love You
Love You Forever
Pat the Bunny
Miss Rumphius
Beatrix Potter (any of them <3)
A. A. Milne (Winnie the Pooh books)
Richard Scarry (any of them)
Madeline (any of them <3)
Make Way for the Ducklings
Babar (any of them <3)

All I can think of off the top of my head that I really loved as a kid and still like reading to children, but I'm sure google or your local librarian could help you find more. Reading is excellent for children and parents alike. Even though she is very little she can look at pictures, and will no doubt continue to use the books for quite some time.

Foam? bath toys (the kind you can stick on the side of the tub like magnets when they are wet) are cute, but they quickly get gross, sometimes moldy, and have to be thrown away. Fridge magnets are also fun, but small and not appropriate for a child of her age, as they can be swallowed.

Blocks and Legos will be grown into soon, but she is too little to play with them now.

FALSE! Theres this wonderful thing about children and clothing, They grow into everything! She's 6 months you say? Buy a 9-12 month outfit, if its a chubby baby they fit now if not they will in a few months :D

Kohls also has tons of clothing so double whammy. You really can't go wrong as long as it isn't too small, parents love clothing you got this

If an outlet baby clothing store isn't too far for you, you can check that out. I was also in a similar situation, but I just got two shirts for the kids. Like the posters above, they're all organized by age so you can't go wrong.

Another possibility is a gift card (say that you didn't know her size or your friend's tastes, and they can pick out whatever they like)

Buy a stuffed animal with a noisemaker inside it. My son loved those when he was that size. They come in handy for getting them asleep when they're fussing, too. The type where you push a button and it plays an 8 bit lullaby worked best for my kid.

And yeah, clothes are awesome. They will grow into it, guaranteed, and there's never enough. 12 or 18 months are ideal, they wear them for a long time, and you get less of them at the baby shower.

I just was able to piece it together from facebook: she was born in December, 2010 which means she's like 7 months old. Okay, I can work with this! Thanks so far for the suggestions.

For a gift for a baby, I once got a sing-a-long ABC teddy bear. It's educational, generally suitable for all babies, and hopefully fun.

How about a toy flamethrower? It's a great way to get babies interested in actual flamethrowers someday

You should totally rock up there with a pony or a puppy.

Failing that a plush toy seems like a safe bet.

I recently got my sister's baby some "bath crayons" for her first birthday, which are like crayons made up out of soap so you can draw on the bath. The baby loves it, and she's now started enjoying drawing stuff outside of the bath too which is awesome

Art supplies outside of family are iffy, since they may not want that encouraged until they're old enough to understand "Not on the wall/floor"

Things that make noises.
TBH i dont think even a 2 year old can read that much.
The stocks idea is awesome lol.

I am surprised no one suggested a copy of sc2! You are never too young to start training as the next bonjwa! Start by training the baby in sound identification...

You will know you are on track when the baby says "zerg!" as her first word.

If I buy something the baby isn't ready for then she will just grow into it so I guess it isn't a big deal.

Yeah, I think you can buy them here, http://www.etsy.com/listing/51305244/bangling-sc2-baneling-fan-art-plush

Not sure if there's somewhere more recent where they're selling, or someone different, but that's one, and it only costs 6$ too!!! :p

as someone who grew up with babies deals with kids a lot, "just buying some clothes" is never gonna be as practical or appreciated as a book or a toy (with some precious, rare exceptions.)

98% of random toys people have given my son have been used twiced. Clothes WILL end up being worn.

Not that there's something inherently wrong with toys, just every baby is different that way. Asking your friends might be the best bet.
