On Sunday, June 19th, our family dog and friend Lucky passed away at the age of 16.
We named her Lucky because she was actually born with 7 toes on each foot.
She was a border-collie lab cross, and she was exceptionally intelligent. Never in her life was it ever an inconvenience to have her. She never tore up furniture or made a mess in the house. She was friendly, playful, and loyal right up until the end. She even saved my sister and I from a bear once.
To be honest, we didn't even see it coming...she was just always so full of energy. She passed away beside my brother, peacefully and in her sleep.
I will miss my friend terribly
Rest in Peace Lucky

Sorry for you loss. I lost a dog before and I know it's terrible to deal with. My advice is to get a new dog ASAP. We didn't do it right away and the feeling of walking around the house always searching for your dog and then realizing she's not there is very unpleasant. As unreal as it may sound to you, the new dog will fill the hole that's in your soul. You'll always keep remembering your old dog and comparing them but after time it's okay, you'll love your new dog as you did your old one and there's no conflict between the two.

I had an Australian Sheepdog that lived to 20, her last few months were pretty rough due to being hit by a car very early in her life. Had this not happened I think she could have lived much longer. Always sad to lose a family pet, especially one living for that long.
Thankfully we've always had a second dog as long as I can remember, although she outlived 3 other dogs during her time with us. I agree Stratos's comment, assuming your family is ready you should look into getting another dog, it really helps ease any of what you may be feeling

She sounds like a good dog and it sounds like you gave her a great life. The way she died was very peaceful.
Enjoy your memories together!
