If you're willing to spend a couple bucks, you can get a much faster, secure connection by buying a VPN for a month. | ||

I find freegate's very useful, though, and it's quite fast because at home I just use a 130 Mbps connection. Chinese websites are incredibly fast, though, so the only thing you'd realistically use freegate for are things like Western news sources (the NYTimes), etc....also Facebook and Twitter if you use those. But yeah, things like grooveshark (incredibly slow) are replaced by websites like xiami. Youtube is replaced by the much faster tudou/youku, etc. I'd actually argue that youku > youtube in terms of speed, because you get none of that buffering bullshit even with blazing fast connections and there are fewer commercials. | ||

And I have to disagree with the poster above. While I agree that yoku/tudou is hell a lot faster, I think the content is ten times worse. However, streaming movies and pretty much any TV show for free and safely is nice :-) | ||

I'm in Shanghai too. I use freegate when I just wanna check my facebook, otherwise I use my company's VPN. Just make sure you use the latest version (7.12). In my experience, hotspot shield doesn't work, so I'm using my school's VPN... freegate works, also. | ||
