Trip To Korea, with a slight problem

I looks like I have finally persuaded my family to go to South Korea with me! The Korean wave has hit hard and strong and I am unable to resist the temptation. It would be here that I would record my 2 week stay (June 24 - July 8)with you guys, just that I have ran into a slight problem. My parents would be leaving on the 1st due to some problems and I am 17 and can't stay alone. My flight is booked for the 8th and I am going to be homeless for a week. I also didn't want to leave that early as I have so many things that I want to accomplish here in South Korea.

So TL, any recommendations on cheap hostels for a week that allow a 17 year old to live alone, or any form of housing what so ever?

Thanks!

I seriously doubt they will check your age as long as you don't look like a 12 year old. But dunno how its done in SK anyway.

Have a great trip nevertheless!

Oh well, then i doubt theres anything the op can do. Except, if he gets to stay at someone instead of motel.

Korea is so strange sometimes. You're not allowed to live alone at 17? Isn't that rather limitting to a great many people with terrible or dead parents?

I was in Korea for 2 weeks alone with my friend when I was 15. No one ever checked my age so I could go to bars and clubs, but that's probably coz I'm white so they might not have recognized my age

Isn't our 17, Korean 18 anyway? So you would be able to do everything?

There are very few places where you can get a hotel room at 17, this is not unique to Korea. Even in your home country of Canada it is probably difficult to get a hotel room at 17.

Why would it be hard to get a hotel room if you're 17? In Norway, as long as you pay, you can live wherever you want.

I've been age checked in Korea only once, at that was at one of the biggest clubs in Hongdae. You can easily buy a bottle of soju for 1000 won at a local market, pregame hard, and go anywhere for a good time without anyone ever IDing you.

No, I do not condone underage drinking.

The Korean legal-to-drink age this year is for 92ers.
For most Koreans, you're carded a lot o_o not sure for foreigners though, and it might be because I mainly hang around university areas only(Shinchon, Hongdae, and Ewha).

As to where you live for the week...
Do you mind somewhere really, really, really tiny?

There are places called goshiwons in Korea that are basically buildings full of lots of tiny rooms, usually containing no more than a bed and a desk. A lot of goshiwons do allow for underage students to stay as long as they have parental permission, so if you visit them before your parents leave, you'll probably be able to get a room for a week. You usually pay by the month though, so you'd probably have to negotiate to pay for only a week. I'm not completely sure about the details since I've never lived in one before, but the info's probably easy to find with a little research.

-edit- Actually, on further thought, as long as your parents are there when you sign the contract, I think there are more places that might let you stay. Not completely sure though...

Sadly enough you will miss the MSL finals and likely the Pro League finals (I'm not exactly sure when it will be, but it will likely be in Shanghai while your in SK), that would really bum me out. I hope you have a blast.

Why is that strange? I went to Oslo(6 hours away from where I live) and stayed in a hotel with a friend when I was 15 because I was going to watch a Slayer concert in Oslo. I don't understand why a hotel would ban people under 18.

How will the hotel know that you're staying alone if your parents checked in with you? Your parents don't need to check out if you keep the room for an extra week.

When you go to check out just pretend that you're the name on the thing and sign whatever they need you to sign.
