Purchased my first mechanical keyboard!

Well, I am happy to say that I recieved my mechanical keyboard from the Fed-ex man today.

On Tuesday I ordered the Razer Blackwidow Ultimate, and today it arrived. I have been fiddling around with it and it seems to be A LOT better from what I have been using for the past 5 years. Never before have my fingers felt so comfortable typing on a keyboard.

Now I have yet to play a game on it yet (mainly Starcraft of course), and I am really hoping I like gaming on it as much as the typing I have done since I plugged it in.

One last note -- the clicking as I am typing is my new found love I think .

Going to bed for the night so I can wake up early and test out this whole mechanical keyboard thing in some games.

Writing out of pure excitement at 11:30,

Venality

haha I might get a mechanical keyboard soon :D
One question though, how loud is it/does it bother you?

I have a Das with Cherry MX blues as well. It's not very loud I guess, but it really depends on you. The difference from moving from a membrane to a mechanical is a big switch though, so you can say it is fairly loud.

Pics or it didn't happen

But seriously some pics, along with a comparison of your average APM from before/after the keyboard would be nice^^

Compared to the old membrane keyboard I was using, it is a lot louder. The loudness doesn't bother me though, because the clicking noise I actually really enjoy.

Though I am saying it is loud, it is not like it is obnoxiously loud or anything. I guess to some people it could be, but it is just a little louder then people are used to since they are used to the sound of the rubber dome when pressed.

Also, I will try to get some pics up, but I don't have access to a camera at the moment so I will have to try and take them with my phone I guess. I will get the pictures tomorrow though, I really need to get to bed (breakfast with Aunt six hours from now ).

To anyone looking into getting a mechanical keyboard, I would say DO IT! I have done nothing but type so far and I like it so much more then the old membrane keyboard. It feels like the keys are much more responsive, and the clicking noise can actually confirm for you that you are pressing the key all the way down to make the keystroke.

P.S - I can do some APM comparisons once I play some SC2 with it, but I am still in Bronze so my numbers aren't that amazing to begin with.

Hmmmm... I was in a best buy the other day and I pulled on of these out of the box to try it out. To be honest I didn't notice a HUGE difference from what I'm already using. Certainly not 100$ worth of difference. I'm glad you're enjoying the new board, but I'm really questioning if I want one.

Really? I'm sure if I put them side by side I'd prefer the mechanical... I think it's like coke and pepsi... I'll always take coke if I have the option for both, but if I can only have access to one or the other it doesn't really bug me, and the differences seem very minor. More accurately, if one costs 100$ more than the other, I'll take the cheaper one and not feel like I'm missing out in the slightest.

There's hidden value to mechanical keyboards as well (as I type on my Das). Typically, mechanical switches are pretty damn close to impervious, and are supposed to last at least 5 times the lifetime of a typical keyboard (gaming or otherwise, they're really the same).

It is a bit of an unnecessary luxury I suppose, but they're really different.

I'm not a fan of full-size keyboards now, but if you want to buy cheap, I suggest laptop style keyboards. Those typically have plastic switches underneath the keys that aren't total crap, and feel much less spongier than full-size desktop keyboards.

Anyways, to the OP, glad you like joining the club. ;]

EDIT: Just to make some more points about mechanical keyboards, the Razer mechanical is pretty cheap, it's not that bad price-wise (I think 80 right now?). I'm not a fan of the gaudy keyboards that are typically considered gaming keyboards, but they seem good from everything I've read. It's probably no more than double the cost of a good "gaming" keyboard anyway, though yes, it is much more expensive than the cheap keyboards that run 5 dollars, or the ones you get for free. You pay for quality, obviously.

Yeah, you can get just the standard Razer Blackwidow for $79.99 I am pretty sure. I just decided to go with the Ultimate because I just graduated and had a little extra cash to splurge on my new product.

As far as the Blackwidow vs the 6vg2, I am not sure on the differences, I looked at both and both seemed to have really good reviews. I have always used Razer mice though, so I decided to give their keyboard a go. Played some games with it last night (yet to go into SC2 though, lots of family visiting impeding that ) and I am LOVING it.

I own both blackwidow ultimate and 6vg2 and i gotta say while i like 6gv2, i do like the blue switch more than the black. For sc2, honestly i cant tell to much of a difference (I mean it wont make you a better player you know, they are both great mech keyboards), but for everyday use, i do like the blues for typing. Plus i love the lighting on the blackwidow ultimate tho its not a necessity.
