Oh man, I got so many PMs thanking me and telling me that I did a good job and I honestly got so many I can't respond to them all ;; I'll practice my Korean and do even better

Also, sorry if Day 2/3 is a little bit less detailed since it's a bit less clear in my mind now how the events went on. But hopefully it'll be what you guys had expected

Anyway, Part 1 is here: http://www.teamliquid.net/blogs/viewblog.php?topic_id=230893

Day 2

MC was at the venue early as we were meeting at 1:10 ish for lunch so we could do the fanmeeting after. I find out who they were playing and I tell MC that he's playing Thorzain in his group and he's like "Augh", and then later in the interview went "When i lost to him I havne't practiced my PvT... but now that I have practiced my PvT I'm pretty confident. He's just another Terran". He later told me he went to the breakfast place we went yesterday and ate before coming and I was like "good job". He seems to like the continental breakfast style though (I remember him the day before eating cereal and a large piled up plate of eggs bacon and such with orange juice)

We eat lunch (it was taco and I had to tell them how to eat it although it was apparently intuititive enough. LosirA later said that it was very greasy and then Daniel was like "that's cause you put too much meat in" and it turns out he was right :O

They find out who joined their groups (July would join MMA's group) and they start the big fan meeting at 2:00. Afterwards they sign a few MLG swag and then after that I tell them what time their games are and I tell them to come back at a certain time. July had to play many consecutive games and CSN people (who were really cool people btw) and Torch alerted me that July hasn't eaten and they were worried... but it looks like July was a bit annoyed that they kept asking him to eat when he said he was okay.

A bit about July. July is EXTREMELY focused. He'll sign and take pictures and such when he doesn't have an upcoming game but if he has an upcoming game he will refuse every fan because he has a game to play. This is quite different from like MMA or LosirA who signed quite a bit even while waiting for the game. I think it has to do with knowing how to deal with large amounts of fans as it comes from experience. Anyway, I talk with July for a bit and ask him when he wants to eat and he tells me he'll eat after the games. He said that MMA told him about the pho they ate yesterday and he said he wanted to try it and I was like of course. I asked him if he wanted me to go and pick it up so he can eat after the game but he said that he wanted to wait and eat there himself during a break time.

Sadly this didn't happen until about 5:30 or so and when we went there North Market was closed (Lemonwalrus and LDK was with me at this point), and we actually tried to go out to another street to find another restaurant... except we ran into a dead end in a parking lot ~_~ so we go back in and I take July to the staff bbq and he didnt like the food there so we went to the food court so he can get a hotdog and we find out that the hotdog place was closed too... so we settled with chinese food and he asks what kind of chinese food America had and I told him it's similar to Ttang Soo Yook and he was interested. He had sesame chicken (which seemed to be the dish that saved the day since all the Korean players loved it !_!) and he was satisfied and Hot_Bid joined me in the conversation cause he was around and we talked about BW. Hot_Bid introduced himself as a CJ fan who stopped following BW after the match fixing scandal... (and July was like "please tell him i didn't match fix" ). Hot_Bid brought up the game 5 against Goodfriend and July remembered the game. I then brought up the game against Rock (the eye of sauron game) and I told July how it was a well cited match in the foreign community about how "this is how macro should be" or "this is how zerg is" and he was amused haha. On the way back Hot_Bid asks him "do you like american girls better or korean girls better" and he laughed a bit and answered "I like them both" and Hot_Bid and July both laughed.

Anyway July ate now and he went back to the games. LosirA now shows up after a nap and he tells me about how he almost collapsed and so Alyssa and I take him back int the backstage and Lee talks to him for a bit and we find out he was dehydrated... he only had iced tea that day to drink (although the night before we bought the players two bottles of water each), and he probably got dehydrated when he took the nap. So we got him water a fruit smoothie and later on a sandwich and water and he slowly got better enough to destroy everyone the rest of the night. LosirA had a feature station game soon after and Incontrol was watching so I got to thank him for being a great sport, and then Incontrol asks me to ask LosirA if he would dance his zerglings during the match. LosirA responds that he's really sorry but he promised to himself not to do a ceremony like that again after an incident so he refused.

I'm a little hazy at this part so I'm going to skip a bit, but anyway the players were back in the hotel and everyone knew what place they were except for Moon and I keep texting back and forth about Moon's placement so we know what time Moon needs to show up tomorrow. I even got a phone call due to a misunderstanding where Moonan was confused for Moon so Moon actually almost ended up going back but the mistaken was caught fast enough so that it didn't matter. Whew. But anyway we find out what place Moon was at in the morning or something. MC calls me later around midnight asking how he could watch VODs but sadly I have no idea and I didnt have accessible internet in the hotel so I wasn't able to help him. Turns out it was MMA who wanted to watch some VODs, but that didn't end up mattering since the players ended up thinking they were facing the wrong person.

Day 3

Thankfully MMA and LosirA was there early and they were practicing/watching VODs and such and they find out about their opponents and they were surprised for a bit but it was okay since they got there early. I get there with Moon and Daniel since MC said he would wait for July and we all grabbed lunch (but July and MC said they wanted something else). MMA and LosirA go back to practice and I go with MC and July to get them the sesame chicken. A fan was actually there and paid for the food before I could pay for it. Heyoka was at the conversation this time and July mentioned how he faced TeamLiquid's CEO in the opening match in the MSL in 2003 or something like that and Heyoka mentioned how he remembered inputting that game in. Some more conversation here and there and then we head back.

MMA wins his game against Idra and does a ceremony where he takes a swig of Nos and does a Kamehameha at Idra... sadly he seems to think the reaction didn't go too well since the crowd reaction wasn't stellar but the online people seemed to have taken it nicely :O Mr Chae actually asked Idra why Idra GG'd and apparently the answer was that Idra thought MMA's 3rd Gold was his 4th since obviously no one expects a player to take down their own Orbital by mistake. It was literally the first time the Koreans played on Testbug too. MMA said that he thought he couldn't have won from that position so he was quite shocked idra gg'd.

I do an interview with Wellplayed I believe with MMA sometime around here. I'm going to whine a little bit about interview requests I think since I received so many of them and a lot of them required that I be there... and then I get stuck in like 20 minute long interviews translating although I'm busy and such. I think I got really stressed out about them around the end of day 2 about them since there were quite a few and near the end we just started refusing them since I had no time and the players started getting tired.... I hope next time we can do arranged press interviews instead of getting requests about them which would organize this a lot better since it did feel like people were scooping around for "exclusive" coverage and such D: (I also wish Wellplayed treated me a bit better but w/e I guess it's my TL shirt ;_;)

So at this point MC and Naniwa are on stage around 4 o clock and at this point I noticed that MMA and LosirA's match is supposed to be at 4:30 but because they would be at the main stage and there was still Idra vs winner left I thought it'd be a nice time to get food for the winner bracket finalists... I ask if it's okay and they confirmed that their next match would be on the main stage after Idra vs winner so I took them to eat Sesame Chicken. Except the issue was that I get a call at 4:25 saying that MMA and LosirA are needed on the feature station asap and they could get DQ'd if they're not there in time... so I was like "crap" and then stalled for time a bit (sorry Alyssa!) and then told the players we needed to go back to the stadium. Except I think MMA and LosirA noticed that we were going back and it looks like MMA ate a bit too fast....so he was feeling quite unwell.

They end up at the feature station and MMA asks for a Hoodie and I give him my MLG hoodie and we head backstage after that since they would be playing in the main stage... we get MMA some tums and hoped that he felt a little better and thankfully he did. At this point the MC vs Idra games were going on and I was there for the opening statements and headed backstage where I would be camped for the remainder of the matches. Lee's energy here was quite intense as we saw MC beat Idra twice in a row and he was going "He's going to do it! He's going to fucking do it!". And MC did it and it was amazing especially when he asked Idra "are you angry" hahaha.

At this point I run to do a quick interview for Moon for CSN (I do apologize to the CSN staff, Daniel, and Moon cause I think i had them waiting for over an hour...) and then Moon and Daniel grab dinner with them and I told them to be back at 8-ish for the final ceremony.

This was the first time this entire weekend where I were actually able to sit down and watch the games. I watched the LosirA vs MMA games and then a bit of LosirA vs MC games (missed a part because I translated some questions for CSN and had to return it to them). And then MMA vs LosirA happened. And then I made the infamous english-english slip up T_T. Hot_bid then interviewed MMA and I think by that point my brain was only half working @_@;;;

The players and Day[9] were escorted by security back to the hotel through some roundabout way. Everyone at MLG staff looked so exhausted at this point because they all so worked really really hard (Alyssa in particular looked really really tired and she went to go to sleep instead of participating in the after party). I head to the TL admins room in before the after party and hang out there for a while and I head to the MLG after party with the players.

MC was so hungry that he wanted to buy stuff at the convenience store and microwave it and eat it (he did eat dinner since I do remember him eating a burger since I ran around all the vending machines to find a working pop machine and at that point the Dr. Pepper booth was disassembled). The MLG staff got them a whole bunch of food and we talked in the patio. One of the Korean players played Michael Jackson on the phone and later Kpop (to which Andrew (CSN's owner) told me to tell them that this is what we are forced to listen to when they watch starcraft . I also introduce R1CH to koreans as the "Wizard" and such

July asked me if I was going to NASL and I told him no and he said he wanted me there @_@;;;

After a given point Idra's girlfriend is drunk and ends up at the patio and she starts trash talking MC and MC was quite the gentleman One of the Korean players remarked that "I thought she was pretty but I was quite mistaken" lol. She kept pointing at MMA and calling him gosu and pointed to MC and Idra "they shit, you gosu" over and over again. MMA jokingly responded "I broke the orbital command as a handicap for Idra" Eventually Idra's gf went and we were like "Welcome to America" Eventually the players headed back. Sooo eventually the players headed back and I met with the MLG staff and thanked them for making everything go smoothly and then I headed back. Whew.

So that's an overall somewhat linear view of what happened. I do have some more general comments though.

Overall Comments

    - The MLG staff are *amazing*. Daniel actually commented that the MLG staff welcomed them so warmly and had so much passion that he was very very impressed and he's been in the Korean eSports scene for years.... and honestly the MLG staff is the biggest reason why I had such an amazing time at the event. Since they worked so hard I wanted to work just as hard as them and try to make the event work as smoothly as possible so I think I literally was operating on their energy and enthusiasm. Many many thanks to Lee, Alyssa, and Josh... and all the people at the floor including Brendan and all the refs, Sean and all the tech staff, and everyone who worked hard in the event (sorry I don't remember all of your names T_T). You guys are amazing!
    - Something I learned from this is that people call things "bubbles" most of the time but Bubbles are really just unmet expectation. I used to worry a lot that the SC2 scene might be a bubble, but there's an easy solution to that -- to meet all the expectation and put together spectacular events that ignire the fans all over the world. It's almost impossible not to give enough credit to the fans. Fans are the biggest reason why the Koreans players were so impressed and the biggest reason why I global e-sports now I think is a huge possibility. MLG Columbus almost felt like a tipping point and it opened the eyes of the Korean players of the Global scene. And it's all thanks to the fans and the staff that worked so hard in the event.
    - If you noticed there was a lot of lag in the last few games... this was because the players got constantly invited to chat rooms by people who somehow figured out their number ID code. LosirA actually got a new ID for his game against MC but people found out what name he was using very very quickly. The final match was pretty bad because of that... It was pretty bad. Please make "Busy" mode actually block all messages, or set a "Friends only" mode where only friends can message/invite you to chats/parties please Blizzard?
    - The interesting thing was how there was so many things inbetween the events I describe above was happening. Basically although it may look rather casual and straightforward I was often needed constanlty (I would be at feature station and then in the middle of it I would be running to the main stage and then looking for a player. I kept saying how I wish I had a clone throughout the entire event. I wasn't just translating for the main stage interviews but I was constantly here and there. I know it's "cheap" to blame my slip ups on that but I was really really tired and exhausted usually by the evenings.
    - I did make a few mistakes in the interviews and I do apologize for that. Part of it had to do with the microphone reverberating and me not being able to catch everything so at times I just conveyed the general idea. I also actually made one big mistranslation in MMA's interview against Idra -- MMA said Idra should have more perseverance, not "be more positive". I didn't know what the word meant so I took the general idea and presented it. I promise I will work on my stamina and my Korean so that it's even better if I get to go to Anaheim!
    - Also LosirA wasn't watching his own replays. He was browsing PlayXP haha. All the korean players were browsing PlayXP constantly throughout the event.
    - MC lost a watch during the event. But apparently it was found! Yay!
    - Oh and MC beat MMA in the offrace match.

Overall Player Impressions

    - MMA was extremely well mannered and a really nice guy. Disciplined and focused (he used to be a MMA fighter until 10th grade when he injured his finger and could no longer compete. WP actually asked him "If you and Incontrol got in a fight do you think you can win since you trained for MMA" and MMA was like "I learned sports to compete, not to harm other people") and honestly he's super trustworthy. There was a incident on Day 3 where LosirA and MMA had some spare time so they could have gotten back to their hotel room and LosirA was trying to convince MMA to go back to his hotel and MMA was like "Sorry I have to stay and I have to watch your replays" and LosirA tried his best to get MMA back to the hotel and MMA said he wouldn't watch the VODs and replays and he eventually just remained and he didn't watch the replays or VODs as far as I could tell. LosirA later mentioned that if MMA says something he 100% trusts it because he is that trustworthy.
    - MC knows how to please the fans very well. While he may put on a show on the stage but in reality he respects the players thoroughly and makes an effort to talk to all the foreign players. In esports and in everything there's often more than what you see and I hope everyone realizes that when they see MC crowdpleasing.
    - LosirA is very smiley. He smiles a lot and really feels like a nice younger brother.
    - Moon is silent and shy but he knows what he's doing and he's very well focused. He is also very good at giving interviews.
    - July is very outgoing and very personable, but at the same time he's able to detach himself quite easily if needed. Amazing focus, determination, and at the same time he knows how to have fun and enjoy himself. I hope he and Torch had fun on Monday before flying out on Tuesday!

Feel free to ask me questions and I'll try and answer what I can. Thanks for reading everything and I hope I did justice to what an amazing event MLG Columbus was by telling you guys the story of the Korean players. But just remember throughout this entire story was the support of the entire MLG staff who helped the players and helped me with passion and eagerness that made the Korean players feel at home. Thank you MLG staff!

SO GOOD.
Read the whole thing, man, you must've been so drained running everywhere - you were the only translator there right??

I absolutely love the insider tidbits on each progamer and the BTS occurrences. It's not surprising to hear July is like that since he is the most used to the fame and fans and whatnot..

Thank you milkis again hwaeeting~

I have to say the english to english translation was one the funniest thing at the event. At first everyone was like what.... does he realize MMA doesn't speak english... and then everyone started cracking up. Super well written and it's cool to see an "insider's" perspective on the event.

I actually wonder if this injury would affect his starcrafting ability.

The players' attitudes seem so incredibly perfect for the sport that they participate in. They all have different takes, but it seems like they are exactly what you would want to see in professionals.

Awesome stories and background. It honestly sounds like the five Koreans were all amazing folks to hang out with and converse with, such a good chosen batch. Can't wait for more to come over. So many Koreans end up being SO MANNER and amazingly insightful and conversational in interviews.

<3 Milkis. Great job at the event, looking forward to the future!

Just curious -- would it be possible for someone to speak to MLG to try to get some food brought to the convention center at a certain time or a couple times a day? It seems like one of the big hassles of the event was that people couldn't really leave because they never knew when they'd be called back to play. It sounds especially hard on people who are escorting VIP guests around like yourself.

I don't think Sundance or Lee or whoever would mind trying to find 500$ in the budget per day for some sandwiches to get brought in. If they don't want the stream to go down for a break at all, then they just need to have one or two sets of players up on stream during the "lunch" time and give them a break right after.

I know it isn't as easy as all this, but it seems like this shouldn't continue to be an issue.

Thanks for doing what you did, and the write ups. MMA was awesome to meet and he was really friendly, every time I ran into him he recognized me and would smile and wave.

Yay! Been looking forward to this.

I go with MC and July to get them the sesame chicken. A fan was actually there and paid for the food before I could pay for it.

What a nice guy.

Thanks for the write up and your hard work at MLG. It's crazy to think how it would've went if you weren't there. I hope they have 2 translators for the next one, especially if there are more korean players. It seems like you didn't have any time at all for yourself during the week end.

Really great read. You did an awesome job at MLG, be proud of yourself! The En-En translation was funny though but hey, we all make mistakes. Hopefully in the future you'll have more people helping you with translations. It seems like you were really overworked!

I'm sorry that we came off as annoying Milkis! Any additional burden we added was totally unintentional--I didn't realize how tied up you were when I asked for your help, but considering how stressed you must have been I really wish we had arranged for our own translator so we didn't have to bother you. I still don't know why people think WP hates or sees itself as a rival TL, I read TL all the time and the imaginary drama is so ridiculous--anything we might have said was to break the ice (we considered introducing ourselves as TLclone.net). We even invited you guys to drink with us! Anyway, awesome write-up and thanks for your help this weekend ^_^!!

It wasn't just specifically wellplayed but it was mostly the fact that everyone asked for interviews and they all asked the exact same questions. I think getting all the people with press passes together for one interview slot during one of the days would be the best plan for that so we can get everyone together for one interview and it'll really save the load on everyone.

You guys asked some pretty fun questions though, so no worries.

After a given point Idra's girlfriend is drunk and ends up at the patio and she starts trash talking MC and MC was quite the gentleman

I really hope MC would respond by tearing Idra's gf's head off with her spine attached (Sub-Zero style) and gloat with it to Idra.

Fantastic.
Don't worry about your "slip up" or your english to english translation, it was cute and funny In fact until this weekend we never had a real translator with a good english, either in GSL or other events, so it was excellent to have you being able to translate, you did an awesome job.
I guess you were running around and was needed everywhere at once, seems a busy weekend :D
And lol@idra girlfriend anecdote :D
Can you elaborate on the Wellplayed thing ? edit : already addressed.

My first throught when i read this was: Do a press conference. Set the "press" up in a room, pick one to ask a question, answer it, go to the next "journalist". Should save you and the players ALOT of time and hassle. And since most everybody is asking the same questions anyway, here everybody gets the answers...

And your new icon...

priceless!

I absolutely love the comments about all the players, thats super interesting, I feel bad for MC, being verbally abused by Idra's girlfriend, I would be scared as hell. I hope you get a second translator for Anaheim dude, it sounds like you were run ragged.

Also your point about needing to figure out a way to organize and schedule interviews is a really big thing. Now that there are so many fans that want to hear interviews constantly, and so many websites and organizations that want to provide that content, there really needs to be an organized way to do all the interviews, my guess would be like a single press conference for every major player or maybe every team. I don't know but something needs to be done to protect the players and make sure they aren't constantly being asked to do an interview throughout events like this.

grats! I'm going into my 4th year as an econ major. is there much of a sc2 scene on campus? I've only seen one korean playing it, the rest of the asians in my house play dota and there's no foreign players I've met

did MC or the koreans indicate what they thought of players? I know they said thorz has a lot of potential and stuff, but did they mention or seem to think highly of any others?

edit: sorry for asking after an entire weekend of questions, just wondering, since you said MC was actually respectful

I asked MC and he said that he thinks Idra is good at macro/managing but he just needs to work on his mental psyche. He also had a lot of respect for Thorzain and such.

Those two really stuck and I don't remember who else they said to say with certainty at this point D:

the more i think about it press conferences are almost too good of an idea not to do at future major events. exclusive interviews are good for in between events, but at huge events like this when there are so many players, and especially so many different press sites, it's pretty much a necessity to have a more organized press conference. it will be a bummer for some of the sites to not have their exclusive video content or whatever, but it would be much easier on organization in my untrained eyes

Second part is also awesome, but I don't understand why you had to do all of the interview translations yourself?

Were you given "exclusive" translation rights for the Koreans? I mean, it's a Starcraft convention...there has to be hundreds of Korean-Americans walking around who could jump in and help out with a player interview if you were busy on stage or something...it must have been really hard on you.

Thank you very much Milkis!!! Both of these were amazing reads. You did an incredible job at MLG and I sure hope they keep bringing you back!

I was worried at MLG because you were trying to figure out what race Sixjax_Major was. I told you he was terran because he used to be gositerran. For that split second I was freaking out like SHIT what if i'm wrong and I just told the Koreans the wrong thing and they screw up! lol i'm really glad I am such a nerd and know too much about starcraft or I would've felt really bad =(

What an awesome read. Thanks Milkis so much for translations!

On June 09 2011 11:35 Milkis wrote:

And then I made the infamous english-english slip up T_T.

...

Stop being so self-deprecating! You were 1 guy doing translations for 5 Koreans for a busy, packed 3-day event. In all of that you made 2 mistakes. We loved it, don't worry about it! It was quite obvious that you were not doing it deliberately and you were busy as hell over that weekend.

July asked me if I was going to NASL and I told him no and he said he wanted me there @_@;;;

Did you go SQUEEEEE? =P You should totally go! I hope it's not a scheduling conflict or a lack of funds =(.

After a given point Idra's girlfriend is drunk and ends up at the patio and she starts trash talking MC and MC was quite the gentleman One of the Korean players remarked that "I thought she was pretty but I was quite mistaken" lol.

WE MUST KNOW WHICH PLAYER SAID THIS!!

FFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUU

That was what it was?! Can someone with an "in" tell Blizz =(

Sounds like a real manner guy. I like these little snippets!

Thank you milkis again hwaeeting~

couldn't have said it better myself

milkis you are amazing. you did so much great work, we all appreciate everything you did to make the koreans have a great/easier time here and present great games.

one thing: maybe it's cause I didn't watch a lot of MLG, but who are Alyssa, Josh, Lee, etc? I know they are MLG employees but what do they do? any pics?

Holy crap, sounds like you went through a lot of work, nicely done. I hope the Koreans had a good time, really would like to see them come back (MMA to defend his title would be sick). Also I can't believe how many messages they must of been getting to lag like that.

IdrA's girlfriend sounds like a class act

It was pretty intense the stuff that people pulled off... MMA actually got invited to a game by someone with the same ID as the casters and inside the game was the other caster and someone with the same ID as LosirA. He quickly figured out it was a fake and left though but yeah, people were pretty elaborate in the stuff they pulled off ~_~

one thing: maybe it's cause I didn't watch a lot of MLG, but who are Alyssa, Josh, Lee, etc? I know they are MLG employees but what do they do? any pics?

Lee is in charge of a lot of stuff :O his twitter is @mlglee and he's the executive producer... Alyssa (@mlgcuz) is the Player manager. Josh (@clutch08) was a production assistant i believe.

<3 your work man; wish that you'd have at least one more colleague among the translator team to help you out at Anaheim; looks like with the Koreans being here more often that you'd need people to be with them more; for things like these the ideal would be to have one translator for every 2 players; so you have someone on stage, someone else handling interviews etc etc.

thanks for part 2 so quickly, you've really covered it all. next time MLG needs to assign a personal assistant to you and a photographer. and pay you!

LOL idra's GF is a skill digger, she goes out wiith a starcraft fan, then moves to idra, then showing some intrest in MMA (well probbably not really but still hilarious)

I could totally see her being a sloppy drunk she looks like the type, sounds like she embarrassed herself

Good that MC kept his composure while being trash talked.

thank you, for everything. your little article/blog like thing was a great read. i was disappointed when i was unable to attend MLG but this really made me feel like i was there. getting to hear a very well told story about your experience being with these players constantly really made my evening. it sounds like a hectic event and i'm sorry you had so much trouble with the interviewers, that sounds like a huge pain.

your translation really made this international event able to bring the Korean players there, which is a large part of why this MLG was a huge success. that alone is enough for you to have my respect and thanks.

the Eng to Eng mistake made me chuckle a bit but i knew instantly that it was from exhaustion and translating for a long time. the language section of the brain doesn't distinguish the languages that clearly and being tired only makes mistakes that are easy to make easier to make. i only speak English fluently and know basic portions of other languages and i make mistakes in what language is used often. so it's far from something to beat yourself up about. it's a mistake but everyone makes mistakes.

Tl;DR thank you for being awesome.

It's awesome how you talked about what food you gave them and what not. If their next US event is NASL/Anaheim, let's just say there's WAYYYY more food in socal to be impressed by. I didn't find much to eat when i was last in cincinatti but that was cincinatti....
I asked my friend how the ratio at a party was, he replied. "Let's just say for every guy there was two dudes."

MMA jokingly responded "I broke the orbital command as a handicap for Idra" Eventually Idra's gf went and we were like "Welcome to America"

Thanks for the translation work and for taking the time to write up this. It's very interesting to get these kinds of behind the scene glimpses. I love how half of it's about food. Is this a Korean thing or was it just difficult to find time to eat while at the event? lol

No jokes, you did awesome. I was watching the streams and every time you came on I thought to myself that I really liked your style. From reading your post you must have been absolutely exhausted but it didn't show one bit except at the very last question of the event, which was perfect because it gave everyone another reason to smile

Your summary of MMA is pretty much how I imagined he'd be in person. Sounds exactly like a player Boxer would pick up - incredibly talented and disciplined, and a perfect role model at the same time.

Awesome,

MMA isn't just a fan boy of the sport, but competed as well.

I don't know how a finger injury would stop someone from competing though. Sounds like a silly excuse to get out. I'm sure there is more to it. :x

I knew that was what was causing the lag. I kept seeing spam from an account that looked like the casters and I just got so pissed. Some guy from Reddit apparently has been doing this to InControl and got him to sign a screenshot of him sitting in the chatroom. I wish Blizzard would fix stuff like this so trolls cant ruin an amazing even like MLG.

It was my first MLG and I have to say that you did amazingly Milkis! I am learning Korean at Ohio State and I was too nervous to try to say anything to MMA or Losira but thank you in Korean when I got to see them. I hope you are able to keep translating and helping the players out for MLG because you did very well and sound very passionate about it. It would be good for all of the Korean players that get invited to have someone as good as you helping them survive the logistics of such a fast paced tournament in America. Thanks for all your hard work.

Thank you so much for sharing with us, the background is fantastic Great job at MLG!
The overall player impressions section was great. You get a feeling for who a player is watching but this definitely solidified it and that's nice.

Just before the LoSirA v Major match I think LoSirA was trying to make a quick run to the bathroom and he must have gotten stopped by at least a dozen people for autographs/pictures along the way. He didn't turn anyone down when he simultaneously had a match to play AND had to pee really bad.

Yeah exactly, anna is a great example. Besides Isn't Idra's GF Canadian?

I have to say Idra's GF seems like a bit of a psycho....

Shame that the 14 year olds tried to ruin the finals with lag.

Other than that, MLG was simply amazing!!!

Loved it all, amazing games, amazing casters, amazing stream and i didn't even mind the commercials (except the bing one, fuck the bing one was annoying).
The crowd was awsome.

Just loved it, my favorite tournament by far!

Milkis is one of my new favourite TL persons =D I think you did a bang up job of all the interviews and being someone who speaks 2 foreign languages myself (not natively), I can't imagine how difficult it was to keep up with all that.

I hope to see more of you, thanks for the write-ups! The best thing about these e-sports events are shoutouts to all the people you don't hear about (tech support, staff, refs etc.) and the stories behind the scenes (Idra's girlfriend getting wasted and badmouthing all the pros =D hahahah)

Thanks again Milkis!

Maybe it was his thumb. I can see that affecting grappling. Or he played Starcraft during his rehab and got hooked.

I always thought MMA named himself that as a sort of homage to Boxer, rather than straight up copying his name ala MKP heh.

To hear that he trained in a sport I've followed for 10 years and now is my favorite terran, the nerd crush is getting out of control. What. A. Boss.

Thanks for the effort you put in at MLG and also letting us know how it all went down Milkis.

*edit* Gah, I'd been ruminating on the significance of MMA's name since I heard about him being on Boxer's team, finally find a thread I feel warrants it and get beaten as I'm typing!

Must improve my mechanics.....

Don't feel bad, my WPM can peak at 120. Practice, practice, practice. I like MS Word maps. Good rush distances. HTML is tricky.

But yeah, MMA... He can submit ppl in game and IRL.

Nice job! You are utterly Brood War Korean in your post-match statement though:
Oh man, I got so many PMs thanking me and telling me that I did a good job and I honestly got so many I can't respond to them all ;; I'll practice my Korean and do even better

Gonna practice even harder, try to serve my fans .... all that jazz.

Hmm, it wasn't me who said that. But I don't think anyone knew Idra's GF was canadian at that point.

In defense of the women from Canada, I think it has less to do with being Canadian and more to do with her just being young.

I'm not sure. O_O

No, he was telling a joke which wasn't meant to be taken literally. Jesus Christ.

Great read and an awesome job at translating throughout the entire tournament!

Man, TL really has some great people working for them. I mean just look at what the staff's done recently. First it was hot_bid's amazing camera work at the TSL (not to mention the actual TSL and the announcement of the new series of TL opens) and now Milkis' translating work at MLG Columbus. Great work guys

american girls aren't like that LOL, then just one random example, i bet there are "at least" 127 girls that are 'just like that' in the whole country, unless you are reffering to America as the continent, but well

awesome writing u did here Milkis, please keep up the hard and awesome job, but try not to write anymore until I finish my exams xD

im starting to get a really negative view of professional starcraft players. especially koreans.
Fair enough they're good at the game, some of the best in the world, but why cant they go get their own dam food? MMA nearly fainted cos he was dehydrated and you all run round trying to get him a drink? slap him in the face and tell him to get himself a drink.

You did an awesome job, but it seems like you spent more time chasing round doing little errands for the players instead of giving interviews and enjoying yourself. Id be pissed tbh if i were you....

Okay I want you to go to a country where no one speaks English and try and survive there for 3 days and still be in top condition for the games. Honestly feeling foreign and separated from the environment is a terrible thing.

Also I would also have more respect for you if you actually read what I wrote properly too.

I know stories of people who came to America from China/Korea and they only ordered really basic stuff for the entire time they were here because their English wasn't very good. Honestly their english is likely at their level with the exception of MC who learned quickly since he's been around on foreign countries a lot more. This was the first time any of these countries left Korea and I was more than happy to make sure they were taken care of having a good time. I was more than happy to make sure the players were okay and that they were in top condition and making sure they were having a good time here. I made my job to be to take care of the Korean players the best I could because it would give a great impression for MLG and for Global e-sports in general. I dunno why you say I should be pissed or anything since I'd be more pissed if I wasn't allowed to take care of them ~_~

Think of it in terms of global e-sports. You want to make sure the Korean players have a great time here. This is why MLG Columbus was a very important event overall since I believe that the Korean players finally saw the Global scene for themselves and showed them that there was something solid here in terms of fans and competition. If you let them be on their own and not take care of them then it gives a negative impression of e-Sports overall.

Hey Milkis. I have seen you around on Team Liquid as a pretty hardcore BW fan, and (I apologise if I'm wrong about this) I am under the impression you disliked SC2. Like you were part of the crowd that would generaly criticize the gameplay, the mechanics etc. of SC2.

How much have changed? I mean surely you must think from an e-sports point of view that it is great but how about gameplay? Do you still find it lackluster and inferior to BW and did this MLG change your opinion in any way?

I don't think I ever criticized the SC2 mechanics, mostly because I actually like it and I really wish BW had stuff like MBS and unlimited unit selection etc (although I don't like how units auto surround). I still find BW more entertaining to watch overall.

I watched SC2 games bit by bit throughout and was disappointed nearly every time... except until TSL and I really liked every game in TSL. That was the event that gave me hope that SC2 might turn into something solid and without TSL I probably would not have been interested in the MLG position.

SC2 still has ways to go, but it's getting there. Watching MMA play was amazing. I don't care if he shift queued or used SC2 mechanics either since every Korean player played really exciting games at MLG.

They can hardly speak english, of course they need some help.

Also a tournament like MLG is very stressful, especially if the players are jet-lagged. Read about Thorzain's experience in his fan thread, he had a really bad experience at Columbus and it is doubtful if he attends the next MLG because of it. And Thorzain can speak English.

Very interesting write-up, thanks a lot! I hope you get hired more, you seem to care a lot and put in a lot of effort where you sometimes didn't really have to, just to make sure that everything runs as smoothly as possible. Appreciate your hard work with both MLG and sharing your experiences with us!

I liked your part two even more. Great stuff, especially the behind the scenes details and fun facts. Thank you for your view on the Korean attitude and also thank you for your characterization of the players. I like your description of July a lot. This shows that he is a seasoned professional. Good blog articles. 5/5.
I just love video games, what's your excuse?

Great write up Milkis! "Welcome to America!" Those were some good times on the patio. And the Moonan/Moon mix up. Thank goodness for cell phones! I want to thank the guys that let me cut in line to buy one of the Koreans a burger before his match. Milkis was on point all 3 days. I am looking into buying Rosetta Stone to learn some Korean so I can say a few basic things for Anaheim.

WHAT THE FUCK. They are invited into America for the first time in their lives with no way to communicate and if you were in milkis's shoes you would "slap MMA in the face and tell him to get himself a drink"? To top it off they are the star players in an growing scene in North America and you get pissed because milkis is a good host and translator?

Your post demonstrates that you lack compassion at a completely basic human level... or the fact that you would show aggression towards them displays your xenophobic views towards people that don't look like you or speak like you.

Being a 22 year-old kid from the UK supports these theories, yes?

Unbelievable.

You sir, are one of the biggest shits in the world. I was gonna say something about putting you in a foreign country where you speak absolutely none of the language, but you've probably never stepped outside your neighborhood before.

I was so looking forward to this, thanks for finishing up the account. Don't beat yourself up over the translating, I thought you did amazing, and the slip up was one of my favorite memories from the event. It showed how hard you were trying to focus on what was being said.

It is obviously a lot of work, but I hope you have the time to share your experiences at Anaheim.

Thanks for writing this Milkis. Perhaps MLG should hire you as their main translator from now on?

While you did say that MLG columbus staff put a lot of work in and that it opened the eyes of the Koreans to e-sports around the word I think overall Milkis I have to admit that you did the most if not all the work in opening their eyes. Without you they'd have been pretty lost you gave them the impression of America and the idea of how foreign events are. You put a lot of work in showing them the joys of playing outside of Korea and if they decide to return for other events I think a lot of it is down to you.

Good job Milkis I thank you for taking a step to bring the Koreans into foreign events.

also - Did you end up getting their autographs for yourself before they left?

i think people usually avoid getting this detailed because they think people in the community wouldn't be this interested, but that, my friend is bs. Ty so much, this was an amazing post, and i'm always interested in hearing more about the players, and glad to hear MC actually isn't a dick. XD I half suspected it was just for show, and he actually seems like he is the least likely to underestimate the foreign players.

Also, idras gf. LOL. I knew she was crazy from the moment i saw her in interview, just needed proof.

Ty! Milkis for Anaheim!
