I live in Columbus, Ohio.

I went half days on Saturday and Sunday but had to leave by three each day due to work.

I want to go to Anaheim.

I sent my dad the following email trying to convince him to let me (I'm not gonna reveal my age because I'm old enough that it's irrelevant to me being able to take care of myself in Anaheim, but it's kinda embarrassing that I still ask my dad permission to do stuff [I live in his house, so his rules..ya know]) I choose this semi-professional format and emailed it to him because he's a business man and that is the best medium to persuade him stuff:

End of July Personal Trip for Jordan K******
A Proposal

Who
Jordan K****** (myself)

What
This proposal is for a trip to attend Major League Gaming (MLG) Anaheim. MLG is the North American “powerhouse” for all things ESPORTS. Namely, Starcraft 2 professionals and amateurs from around the world travel from event to event participating, chatting, and talking games. Essentially, it is nerd heaven. This is the third event in a six circuit event. The second event is the one I attended in briefly in Columbus on June 4th and 5th. For MLG Anaheim, I plan on not only viewing the tournament, but competing as well.

When
My proposed flight will July 28th and I will return August 1st. The event runs from July 29th until July 31st.

Where
Venue address
Anaheim Convention Center
Anaheim, California 92802.
(This is where we attended Blizzcon in 2009)

Proposed hotel address
Eden Roc Inn & Suites
1830 South West Street
Anaheim, CA 92802
(This hotel is adjacent to the convention center.)

Why
Simply to show myself that I can save money for something that I want to do and go be responsible and take care of myself for three days. While there are other ways to do this, I feel that having the responsibility of planning and funding an entire trip would be a very beneficial experience. In addition to the fore mentioned, I really just want to go, and why delay doing fun things in life while you’re young and not really tied to any important responsibilities?

How
The spectacular thing is that ideally, this trip will require no funding from you! The purposed hotel + flight package from hotwire.com totals to be $552. This obviously leaves out a few financial factors: a competitor’s entry into the event ($75), food for the weekend ($100), and spending money ($100). The total comes an estimated $827. With my check from Jet’s pizza, and adequate savings, I can earn $827 by the final date. However, only $552 needs to be funded up front and the remainder of the money can be saved as the date closes in.

My Contact Information
Any further questions, concerns, or other inquires can be directed to me personally, via email (***email went here***) or Skype (I***Skype here***),

What do you guys think? Anything I should add for after he reads it an confronts me?

Thanks liquid :D:D

This is cute .

As this is communication between you and a family member, I'm not sure how much we TL'ers will be able to help, however. We can only guess at how your father would take it, though it seems well thought-out and 'professional' enough for in-family communication.

Lol if nothing else your dad should say yes just because of how much effort you put into writing this email. I know if my parents knew I cared about something so much they'd encourage me, even if they don't understand.

How come you have to make a formal application type thing, can't you just talk to him face to face?

But I suppose if he's unfamiliar with the event your email gives him a fairly detailed account of everything

Haha. This actually reminds me of the time I negotiated with my mom (through a letter too!) to up my school allowance. I was like grade 3.

Honestly, your dad will find it amusing to read this. First thing that will come to mind though will be your safety. Unless you're of age already, he will want you to be accompanied.

That's essentially the reason for an email. He only knows I went for a little bit in Columbus and had a blast. This was an attached word document (should have mentioned that).

Safety I'm sure is his concern, but I'm of age so that shouldn't be TO much of a concern. OK I'm twenty...yeah embarrassing I still have to ask : /

But ultimately this will hopefully inform him, show him I'm serious, and let him know of pricing information.

I have a plane ticket that I still have to use (I was going to go to Turkey for a class, and I had to cancel). So I have a cheaper flight (only be a $100 change fee)!

No that's a fair point! That's honestly just the best way to communicate with him, and when I was younger that's always how I went about stuff and it turned out more favorable. We just talked on the phone about prices and stuff so it worked! I'm convinced that it wouldn't have if I wouldn't have emailed him.

Well, I understand that a lot of fathers would immediately say no when you start "hey dad can i fly to anaheim,CA for a gaming event" and just putting it out there with all the details like that gives you a higher chance of success.

I can't imagine your dad thinking this is normal though. The contact information alone is just LOL. You live in the same house. What was his reaction to the email? Was he not surprised at all?

Good job getting it done though, I hope you have fun.

He called and said, "We'll see about getting the change on your ticket and try to make it happen for you." He didn't seem surprised at all.

I do have a question for everyone: I have a ticket from Turkish airlines, and I was wondering if I could get that possibly changed to an american based airline company?

You're old enough that you should talk to him. If you write a letter he is going to think you are insanely immature.

All these plans you made are great, talk to him about them, show him you can book a hotel and arrange flights and all that. Do not write a letter!

i actually think this is a good idea, writing it like this makes your dad realize that you take this seriously and really want to go.

a "can i go to a gaming event" doesn't really convey the importance.

True, but presenting the same dedication and planning in a conversation shows him that you are an adult.

This encompasses how the best way to communicate with him goes. Like I realize that a conversation, with most people, would be the most mature, but my father is more oriented to this kind of communication. He responded well, so it must have been at least an OK method. I think if I was like, "hey dad, can i travel across the country to see some people play video games for a couple of days?"

...that wouldn't work at all. I realize I was being facetious in the mock conversation but no matter how i pitched it that way would it have worked. The fact that I took up the time to type up a two page document outlining the important factors of the trip will mean a lot to him.

I'm not going to judge too harshly - every family's dynamic is different and age isn't always an indicator of maturity (I'm not by any means calling you immature) but if I read this correctly YOU are funding this trip. And you're 20 years old. If he said no - would you not go?

You are indeed reading correctly, I would be fully funding trip. If he said no, I wouldn't go. I live in his house and have to listen to him until that is no longer the case.

Are you paying any rent? If not, you should offer up the idea for a little more freedom. Being 20 years old and not allowed to go on a trip funded and planned entirely by you is unhealthy.
