Hey all. I'm getting ready to graduate with an associates in Graphic Design in the coming months and thought it might be worth posting some of my work for the world to give any final critique.
If you have any nitpicking, please, nitpick to your hearts content. The last thing I want is for a potential employer to rip me apart for a typo that I didn't notice.
Also, sorry TLBot (who will assuredly PM me after posting this) but I'm just not a fan of posting low res images. I'll spoiler-tag everything for ya'lls convenience, though.

I'm getting these acid-etched on Sterling Steel. I want to have somewhat of a memorable business card, not just another piece of paper for someone to throw away. Its a little expensive, but I hope they turn out nice, and that potential employers get the right message (aka, that I'm reliable, not a tryhard)

+ Show Spoiler [BRAIN SHOPPING explanation] +The idea of this project was to translate the article in to a aesthetic poster (as opposed to an informational one, in which case the text would be easier to read.) When I read the article regarding coming up with ideas, I came to think of my brain as a series of gears, turning until the greater part of the machine spat something out.

+ Show Spoiler [ESC GAMING HOTEL explanation] +A hotel for gamers. Having been to a few CPL/WSVGs in the distant past, as well as MLG DC and wanting to go to Blizzcons/Quakecons/PAXs etc, I thought it would be a good idea to have a hotel specifically made to be a venue for gaming conventions.
The project was to turn this fictional idea and create a "corporate identity" for printed materials of it- a business card, letterhead and envelope.
(ignore the black border on the letterhead, oops. Also, I designed an envelope too but haven't testprinted it yet to make sure it works the way I want it to.)

+ Show Spoiler [MONTGOMERY ILLITERACY explanation] +The project was to take an existing brochure for a real company and redesign it with the same text and the same message. Their old brochure sucked, so I started over from scratch. While I fancy myself an amateur photographer, I pulled these stock photos off of GettyImages (which our school has access to)

+ Show Spoiler [BLIND AWARENESS explanation] +I was browsing through a professors font library (some 4700 fonts, jesus christ it took forever to sort) and came across a Braille font. An idea took shape to create something with it. T he idea was to have a campaign poster dedicated to equal rights or something and put seeing-eyed people through the feeling of having Braille shoved in your face. The logo in the bottom right corner kinda sucks (imo) but it belongs to a respected company, so I added it to add a little bit of legitimacy to the poster.

It all looks like solid stuff, I'd just encourage you to be a bit more creative and out of the box if you have the choice.

The hotel one looks really legit and something like a real hotel would have. It's clean and simple.
I didn't like the Brain Shopping poster. Half of the text is readable while the other half isn't. It just seems annoying. The gears don't really appeal to me either. The colors look decent. This one was probably a hard project to do. I can't really think of a way of doing this in a really good way.
As for the business card, it looks weird. Though that's not necessarily a bad thing. Having it in metal might give a good impression to some employers, but others might be turned off by it. I'd say it's risky to use one, but it might pay off. Having such a unique business card does make you look like you're trying hard instead of looking reliable. Most people think conservative = reliable and that's not an every day business card.

In what way is this "criticism" constructive? It might be more helpful if you could say more than "be more creative", which is criticism that can be levelled at every act of creation in the history of human endeavour.
I like the concept for blindness. Making a connection between the visual and tactile senses really makes it effective in this case I think. Furthermore the quote is actually very apt for once, usually I find quotes to be an easy way to remove sincerity and meaning from a message.

Ffor the business card "KA" which I guess reflects metal, isn't much memorable to me. Not sure why you used a slr's shutter as the background because it seems quite irrelevant, unless the company produces camera, or the company is a photography company.
I'm also not sure if it's a good idea to make the person, who's holding the bcard, to read horizontal and vertical. (seems to me like you just threw in the vertical text to fill in the blank space)
Finally, the bottom information doesn't seem to fit the whole concept. On top of you a really bold and firm font, and the bottom it's all curvy and soft.
And for the ESC hotel, you just pulled down the menu and picked a font. Nothing special there. Also not sure how it reflects a hotel, but it reminds more either of a computer enginner, or a exit door, or whatever. Not a hotel.

It's not a "constructive criticism". It's just a suggestion. But I'll have to agree with sob3k. The designs look very basic and I don't think that much thought were put into the <s>typeface</s> fonts. Just clicked the drop down menu and grab something that looked nice. My instructor calls this a Pull-down Artist.

I hope to break some boundaries when I'm past the schools requirements for a portfolio. We're limited to certain amounts of certain projects for our "portfolio show" which are have to "pass" to graduate. This isn't to say I don't need work on the creativity department, but rather that graduating is on the forefront of my mind, and the school has made some restrictions very rough.
Some of my teachers have a bad rep for graduating you based on whether or not you do what THEY like, rather than what is effective. Liking something is subjective, so sometimes I cater to their opinions.

I didn't post any of my photography, but once I have my website up and running, it will have both my photography and my graphic design portfolios on it. The shutter was to represent both worlds. It's not spelled out on the card, but I'm hoping that when I finish my website it will be fairly obvious. I suppose without much context or introduction it does seem fairly random, though. The person I'd hand the card to would probably have my portfolio in-hand though.

It's pretty standard practice to have two typefaces that contrast one another, usually via having one be serif and the other sans. While I make no claims to perfection (and appreciate the critique) I'm not sure I can agree with the reasoning that two fonts don't belong together simply because they are different styles

Looks decent...can't say I agree with your font choice however. I'd also agree with above posters on creativity. Your designs seem pretty standard.
