There. I've just about had it. I am mad, I am steaming with rage.
And I'm not qq'ing about imbalance, I am not mad at the game itself, I am mostly just angry at myself. And I did even win the last game that got me this enraged. As you might have read in my blog title, I am a not very proud member of the gold league division "Kelerchian My" on the EU servers.
And don't get me wrong. I love this game. I ruined my sleep schedule for it. I've seen university grades go down the drain for it. This is me below.

And yes, that is a SC2 baseball cap I am wearing. I ordered that for freaking 20 Euros at J!NX because I so dearly love this game.
I've played the game with my fingers, my arms, my brain, my heart and my soul. I've casted my heart out for my clan and had people from opponent clans cheer for me due to my enthusiastic casting style. And yet, when they checked my profile for my ranking, they couldn't stop laughing at me. I was asked: How do you happen to be such a ridiculously entertaining yet resourceful commentator, but not at least in diamond league? Lets face it: I am in gold league because I most probably belong there.
So what I do is: grind the ladder anyways, if I'm not completely annoyed by it. And now this kid came along, and the only thing he builds is rax(7, to be exact). No gas until 8:07/8:09 minutes(aka after his completely failed first no upgrades mass marine push), and he was a) not even playing zerg and b) probably hasn't even heard of spanishiwa.
Needless to say, that after my siege expand, I just went ahead and crushed him. He had ghosts in the meantime, but it did not matter. I had 12 marines for every ghost he had(36), and 1 tank for every 2 marines he had(11), and mind you, he had 7 rax compared to my two(with 1 reactor, that is).
After the game, which was a landslide victory, as i had nearly doubled him in points, I was curious to see which copper league he hailed from. But to my bleeding eyes' surprise, he was in gold league too(1v1, in 2v2 he was even in diamond, which is a thing I have yet to achieve, being in diamond league. It would probably be a holiday to me if I ever achieved that.).
Then it hit me like a sledge hammer: I suck at SC2 and there is next to nothing I can do about it other than go ahead writing a blog at TL.net. And set forth to improve in little, tiny, shaky baby steps and maybe have a shot at platinum league until next christmas. Bear with me until then.

i sometimes feel the same way though i'm in masters, it still hits me sometimes that i never will be good at this game 
(it hurts even more that i missed broodwar even though i played it with a passion 10 years ago, just had no pc or internet at home)

Some of us are doomed to be horrible at this game (I for one cant keep my attention long enough to get out of platinum -.-), but it sounds like you actually work on it. Theres no reason for you to stay in Gold much longer. I'm sure you'll be out soon

I'm silver - I'll often just go mass marine (unless I have to adapt) as it's a useful way to practice keeping stuff building (and a handy object lesson reinforcement since if you screw up the macro, even in silver, you lose because you're only got one kind of unit). But it sounds like that's not what this guy was doing.
On the bright side, you didn't lose.

I've personally always been baffled at people who have a pretty good understanding of the game and yet can't make diamond. I've tried coaching a few people and often received shocking revelations. "What's a hot key?" "Oh, I didn't know that building did that..." etc.
For the most part, though, they just have bad macro and bad decision making. I try to tell them that all they need to get to diamond is one solid build for each matchup. I say, "just go 3rax every game and you can make at least plat." But no, they want to open blue flame hellions into cloak banshees and expand at the 20 minute mark.
Good luck on breaking Gold. Don't know if the ladders are still locked, but I know all it takes to rank up is a little study, dedication, and sometimes some insight from a better player. I knew Spanishiwa before he was a household name. He completely stomped me in a tournament by outmacroing me like I've never been outmacroed before. Really opened my eyes to the importance of drone timing.

Indeed a very good read. As I'm in the silver league, I live through the same situation a lot of times. One of my ZvPs was like: The guy 4 gates, completely fails, expands behind it (I have 4 bases against his main and natural that's still in construction in 13th minute mark), tries to play a macro game, but his macro was so bad that i smashed his stalker-immortal army with pure roach. The guy complains about how roaches are imba (He had double figure supply when I was maxed and i didn't even pressure him after his failed 4 warpgate allin), how playing zerg is ezpz and all that stuff.
Long story short: He was also in silver league with more points than me in less games. I'm still bitter about it and it went so far that i switched back to BW. Now I'm D+ and I'll probably get a second account to D+ in a few days

I've been top 200 from beta to around 6-8 months after release. From there I knew I couldn't get any better without really putting a lot of time in(I had very few games played compared to other top 200 players), so I just got bored any pretty much quit. Now I just hop on every once in a while on my friend's gold account and troll masters players on customs, it's a blast =D

sounds like you have the right attitude and support from a good clan.
perhaps play more with them and less ladder as playing people like that wont necessarily make you better.

You do know that the ladder was locked right? I.e. there were no promotions etc.? They just fixed it and people are starting to get promoted now...

Even though I started out in bronze league at release, I have been in gold(top 3 during season 1 mostly, top 15 now as i dont play that much anymore) since the end of august 2010 with a peak of 2-3 weeks in platinum in september 2010, therefore it is probably a pretty safe guess to assume that I am merely not affected by the ladder lockdown. 
But hey, a man can dream. =)

i like you as a person, you're extremely passionate and this is probably why it hurt you so much keep up your pasion but change your mindset: you can easily get to diamond or even better: let the flames about you being gold shrug off your shoulder

For some people it just takes longer than others. From your post it really seems like you are dedicated to the game and I believe that you will get into masters soon as long as you keep practicing. To get better you should work on your macro/expand and really start looking into pro replays and analyze what they do. Just keep playing bro

Keep trying. I went from copper (beta) to diamond so it's possible for anyone to do it. You just gotta focus on quality practice. Massing games doesn't help. Work on your fundamentals (macro mostly, then micro) and only use 1-2 builds max per matchup and get really good. Go back, watch your replays and figure out why you lost. Look at your money, look at your saturation. Say, could I have won this battle if all those minerals were army instead of sitting there. Am I fully saturated as fast as possible? Did scout to make sure I make a decent unit composition? Macro alone can get you into platinum/diamond level so work on that and you will be good.

One game means nothing. So many people fail to realize this. Maybe the guy was just messing around or doing some crazy build because he was bored. I personally do it all the time and I bet you guys do to. Winning 1,3 or 5 games doesn't mean much at all.

I actually did ask him after the game, and he told me he was just a little rusty and still struggling to get used to the game, which made sense to me, because he had only 1 win in season two 1v1 at that point. but then again, he is in diamond in the multis with more games, and that can't all be his teammate if he sucks that bad!

If you're not in masters, then there's a ton of stuff you can do to improve. And I'm sure there are plenty of people who are more than willing to help you with it.
Just keep at it and make a conscious effort to improve and you'll be fine.

There are often people who just have luck with their placement matches. A colleague got placed into gold because he won 3 of them, eventhough he was far below that skill-level (he had maybe 5-10 games played). Only in season 2 he got placed into bronze where his winrate is now ok.
Rank means nothing with less than 50-100 games played.
