So, I have been working at Home Depot (hardware store) by my house for about 3 years now. When I first started it was pretty cool. Awesome people, awesome managment and cool hours. But now alot of people I liked have been fired or just quit. And i just grown to dislike the place management and the customers (i know all retail has customer interraction) And the management is horrid compared to what it used to be. Now alot of my other freinds there where talking about in August they are gone. So i figured maybe I should look for another job now since alot of people are leaving (who i will miss alot) sure i will talk to them on facebook and stuff but the place wont be the same.. Now the only thing holding me back is that i get 40hrs a week with a set scheldule (11:45-8:30) I make about 600$ every 2 weeks. I do not expect a set scheldule where i go next but I figured maybe I it is my time to move on also... I know in the end it is on me but Iam just not sure what to do...
I was also thinking that my 3 years of experience in retail would help me out a little looking for a job... maybe i should start going to school and just take less hours from work?... decisions decisions...*some info about me Dont have car payment buy my cars used (Iam 23 right now and in 2 years i get 100k inhearitance and I also already have a house paid off in my name currently renting out) not sure if that should affect me desicion...
---I wouldent quit my job tell i had a new job or knew I will be going to school 100%

You're making 600 every two weeks on about 40 hours of work a week. That's like 7.50 an hour. You should think about asking for a raise if you've been working there for three years (unless you're talking about 600 after taxes then... yea i know how you feel). Anyways, school is a good option. You don't have to rush school so you could go to school part time and not fall behind in your studies. Also, apply for work at other places while you are still working at home depot and see if you get hired. Make sure you got a job though unless you wanna get loans for school.

interesting predicament. I've had similar experiences albeit as a volunteer (finding a place with my friends). I think I would work to save up enough money so I can afford school and work part time in school as well. Your inheritance shouldn't affect your decision; your decision should be based on whether you feel the job is a good fit for you and if you seriously do not enjoy it, there is really no reason to continue living a black and white work day. So I would save up money to go to school and work part time as well (that's what I think I would do in this situation however I haven't gone out to the real world to see what the job hunting experience is like).

With everything OP has said i think he should maybe try go part time at his current job and go further his education.

Yeah that is not good. I lasted at a retail store for 5 years as my first job. Same thing pretty much. I did manage to get to $13.00 per hour at it though(started at $7.00) and some profit sharing which added up to an extra $1.00 per hour over the 5 year period. I would look for a change in job myself with those conditions.

Hrmm $ 7.50 an hour? That sounds very, very low to me. Would it be possible for you to get an education? Are wages that low in the US?
I had a part time job that payed badly and it was about $ 16 / hour. Now after three years of school my job that im starting pays $ 25/ hour.
Now in sweden we have pretty high taxes so I only keep 66% of that but even then it feels like your making way to little? :o
|
Yea that is really, really low.
When I worked in McDonald's, they gave me a raise every 6 months. It's the company's rule, I think. Near the end I was making 11 dollars an hour.

Yeah, definitely find something better. I've been working part time at costco (in california) for about the same time you ahve been at the home depot. sTarted at $11/h; currently making $14.75/h (about $500[after taxes] every 2 weeks on 21 hours of work per week [8 of those being on sunday tho]) plus the benefits are great. I'd seriously recommend trying out at costco. Great company ^^~.

Min wage here is $7.25.

While it is low, remember that goods and services are all significantly cheaper in the US than europe/australia so the standard of living may be better than you think.

here in san fran minimum wage is 9.92 now i think, but things are way more expensive here.

[QUOTE]On May 15 2011 20:01 Cr4zyH0r5e wrote: Yeah, definitely find something better./QUOTE] I heard 1,000,000 Americans applied for 50,000 McDonalds jobs a couple months ago. How is the US job market lately? it still doesn't sound too good to me.

The US job market still is pretty awful. Basically what happens is because so many people were laid off, and there are so few positions available, there ends up being thousands of people applying for the same positions. When it gets time for the final decision, if you did well and got that far, it's between you and another dozen or so that were interviewed. Depending on your field, you are very likely to be beaten by a "more qualified candidate".
In OP's case, he's basically working minimum wage-ish retail. Something I wish I told my former self in these situations is to actually stay at the job I didn't like until I found another. Think about what you want to do as a career. Do some research on what it takes to get there. Try to find entry-level positions into it, or research schools in your area to see if you can find a good fit for your career goals. Other than that... research job search sites to learn how to improve all facets of the job search: the search itself, resumes, interviewing, networking, etc. you want every advantage you can get when applying for a new job.
Good luck!
