Effects of siblings sharing use of a gaming mouse?

So the crappy like 4 year old red laser mouse that I currently use broke for the computer that me (18), my little brother (15) and my little sister (13) all have to share. The computer is really bad, I get lag even with lowest settings, and I'll be getting a gaming computer for myself for college sometime mid to late summer likely. Should I buy the Mouse and Mouse Pad i was looking at getting for myself and eventually for my gaming computer (Steelseries Ikari Laser Mouse and Steelseries QcK Mousepad) ahead of time, before getting my own good computer? I'm worried about the fact that my brother and sister likely won't wash their hands before use, and that their using it for more general tasks (my brother plays starcraft II some as well, not as much though) might lead to more wear on mouse+mousepad such that I would have to buy another sooner, etc. Should I wait to get that Mouse+Mousepad combo that I intend to use for gaming along the gaming computer that I get over the summer, and just get another crappy mouse atm to endure until then, or buy my gaming mouse and mousepad ahead of time despite my bro and sis having to use them until I get my own computer in summer?

Advice, comments, other thoughts appreciated much, as I want to be able to play Starcraft II

If you don't want your siblings to use your gaming mouse, then buy a cheap usb mouse for them and get a gaming one yourself

I don't understand what is so difficult

Well, since we use the same comp, I don't think they'd go to much trouble to change up mouses. Though that would actually prolly work, just plug my good mouse in when I wanna play SC2. Suppose I can just swap on my mousepad as well....

Ty for stating one of i'm sure many obvious solutions ^^

I would just get 2 mice as previously mentioned then when you are done take it and put it in your room and plug in the other one, don't even let them touch it, or just get a cheap usb mouse and use that for a while as an expensive gaming mouse isn't as vital to sc2 as it is to CS or Q3

wtf? why are you worried about them doing "general tasks"

If its a good mouse it should last YEARS.

just relax dude.

Get them a junk wireless mouse so can jsut throw it somewhere after they are done. Im sure if you ask them nicely theyll use that and not YOUR oh so precious mouse.

A little bit of peanut butter on the mouse won't be the deciding factor as to whether or not you win the GSL next season. I'll happily admit I was wrong when you do win the GSL.

Put this in perspective and realize you're getting really upset about pretty much nothing. Get another 10 dollar mouse and keep the good one in your room until you want to play SC if you've convinced yourself.

What are you gonna do whit the keyboard man!?!? A sticky board is much whorst then an oily mouse, when you manualy have to bring the # hotkeys back before pressing, it gets hard on multitasking :p

if you do not mind using a wireless mouse, you can easily hide it from the rest of your family.

Last time I let everyone use my mouse it got scratched all over =(. Now they get to use a $20 mouse.

Yeah I would recommend doing this, I always hated sharing a mouse/keyboard with my siblings, they always made it so messy and gross. It Seriously bugged the crap out of me, and the left food wrappers etc all around the PC.

Though now I never take my own pc for granted.

Having looked at a few gaming mice, i can't see what is so great about them anyway. Just looks like shiny shiny to me. Wired laser mouse > all.

Plug in both mouse, move the good mouse behind screen or where ever you chose, leave the crappy one there.

Then take it out when you play, put it back when you get off.

Or do what I do, buy a wireless mouse and put it on the table. They all go for the wireless first.

unless your brother is whacking off directly onto the mouse, it will be totally fine... you'd have to be a real big slob to mess the thing up.

You could always just buy a cheap-o USB...

Did I ever say I was upset? I don't even have it yet, and I don't expect them to do anything. Just wanted to know some people's views regarding this, more as to whether or not it would actually do anything to the mouse itself. If it's just going to get possibly a little more dirty, whatever, I don't care, just making sure that that would not actually deteriorate performance.

It wont change a thing about the preformance of the mouse, unless you have like me an Angry gamer of a brother (I´m a angry man myself when playing xD) that smashes the mouse in the table when he looses to many games in a row! (Damn you banligns damn you!)

Been buying and was charing when I lived at home expencive gaming mice and they have enver showed any type of wear except the inevitble smashing of the mouse leeding to me buying a new one

I realised that I have waisted alot of money on mice the last 10 years when I had 15 gaming mice prolly around 60$ each in my closet with the same falt... Right mouse button broken :'(

So stop beeing a cheapass and buy a nice mice so that your brother may smash it for you!

Feet may require replacing sooner, dirt is a possibility, and wear on the pad also possible. If you think they can be responsible with the stuff, it won't be a big deal, if they'll be abusive, you should probably wait.

If you buy a spare mouse and want them to switch, a good way to make sure they do is just to modify DPI and sensitivity settings on them so that their mouse will work fine, but if they try to use yours, it will be too sensitive and drive them crazy.
