I can see that the derailleur and the cassette are mismatched. The cassette is Shimano, and the derailleur is SRAM. The compatibility especially with that cassette isn't guaranteed. See if you can shift through all of the gears. | ||

See if you can shift through all of the gears. mate how would a derailleur and cassette not be compatible? shimano/sram use the same spacing. The shifters and derailleur however.... You need sram shifters for a sram derailleur as shimano use a different cable pull ratio. OP i would grab that new bike asap. Your current bike is a bso and is an embarrassment to the cycling community. but remember, a lighter bike may be more comfortable and will cut seconds off your trip time, but it won't make you a better cyclist | ||

I don't identify as a cyclist. It will improve me as a cyclist though: I'll actually ride it lol. I've jumped on it. Will get it soonish, but he lives 20 miles away. | ||

The SRAM derailleur might not have the range for that swing. Then, if the shifters were SRAM, then they wouldn't have the first shift to move the derailleur far enough. If the shifters were Shimano, then the pull wouldn't be right for a SRAM derailleur. | ||
