It is with great sadness that I say farewell to my 120GB Western Digital hard drive after 7.5 years of service. With the amount of punishment I put on that hard drive (lots of downloading, installing, and deleting), it's a miracle that it lasted so long.
I downloaded Portal 2 because I'm a college student with no money. At 88%, the download stopped, with an error: "Failed Cyclic Redundancy Check". Hmm, I thought. That's a strange error. Let's google it. The first result from google basically said "Your hard drive is dying, back up everything."
At that moment I had only seconds to save what was important and unreplaceable on my hard drive: my most recently updated résumé and my cool NASL graphics. Alas, I was an idiot and simply watched my computer die instead.
Rest in peace, good buddy. You've seen a lot of shit in your day. Sorry for installing and uninstalling UT 2004 twenty times and for constantly downloading albums, listening once, and then deleting. Also, sorry for not defragmenting you, ever. Also, sorry for putting you in an optical drive slot because I don't know how my computer's case works.
Hmm, no wonder it died.

=( Well, at the very least you've done a service to me, reminding me to update my backups which are ~6 months old.
RIP HD. =(

This is seriously the truth... How did you manage? Did you have more than one hard drive? ~_~

inflation! instead of downloading mp3s and xvid videos we are (or at least myself at least) moving up to flacs and 1080p rips.

I cleaned out my computer almost constantly. I rarely archived a movie unless it was something I didn't think I'd be able to get later.
I only regret deleting one thing... and that was an HD copy of the legendary Nadal vs Federer Wimbledon match from a couple years back. Ah well...

A few hours of 1920x1200 fraps recordings eats a tremendous amount of HD... and then managing multiple video projects at once + casts. yeah, there's like 3.5tb dedicated to recording alone.

How do you people use up so much space!?!? I'm using a laptop from 2007 with only 74.5 GB of space and I still have 25 GB of free space. You all must download pr0nz nonstop or something.

Add a few more games, a music collection, and some HD copies of films, and you're hurting for space on a 120GB hard drive.

another one bites the dust, my 120gb wd from 2004 died last autumn, i mourned for it, especially since it went down still carrying my single copies of thousands of pictures of 6 years and other such.
it yet rests quietely in a cardboard box on my balcony, among other graveyard computer junk a la day9's magic box of old as fuck pc part hoarding.
you will be missed my friend.
that is to say, i feel you, motbob ^^

I've still got parallel port cables and a 56k modem in my PC parts box , i should really get around to throwing some of that old junk out...

Will need new HD in ~3 months

I've never had more than 300-350 and with some frequent clean-up I do alright. Pretty obnoxious, though =\

I have a 60gb WD raptor and now after reading this thread I wondered how I am able to cope and got me worried about it failing after formatting and installing the OS over and over again SC2 for US and EU regions are enough to keep me entertained I suppose :D
|
im currently sitting nearly full on a 250gb drive, and thats with taking care to clean out old movies i wont watch again. how did you survive with 120gb drive for so long D:
|
Well, I guess I'm not gonna wait on that TB external! Added bonus is I can download all these steam games that I currently can't because I have no room. Sorry for your loss, if I lost the stuff I had on this thing, I'd be heartbroken.

Oh man, I feel your pain. I had a dying 120gb WD too that had to retire too like a year ago that had been working non-stop for at least 9 years. The funny thing is that at one point it just broke down and wouldn't boot any OS. I kept trying and trying for days to fix it, then suddenly just after nearly giving up, it started working again and worked perfectly for at least another 6 months. Moved to another HD once I decided to upgrade to Windows 7, then removed the old one, surprisingly enough in a pretty good condition considering it was still working.
RIP all dead and retired 120gb WDs.

haha 2 weeks ago my comp died and i lost my HD, also 120GB so I had to instal SC2 SC:BW and LoL again but unfortunately i can play only LoL because SC is too hard to play on notebook : ( The worst thing is that I lost 50GB of my old and best WoW movies, bye bye 4 years of my life :D Have no memories now WHAT AM I GOING TO SHOW TO MY KIDS NOW ?!
RIP

I decided a few years ago that constantly cleaning, deciding what I need to delete/what I want to keep, redownloading stuff I deleted earlier,... simply wasn't worth my time given how cheap harddisks are today. We're at like 5ct/GB for external HDDs atm.

RIP Haha I know I'm poor because I can't even afford to upgrade from my two hard drives adding up to like 500GB of space. You should treat yourself though. Computer hardware dying is the perfect excuse to pimp that shit out. Do they sell petabyte HDs yet?
