Or well, as objectively as you can get. The ratings are gamespot user ratings, with all games having more than 100 votes to be statistically significant.
NES
8.7 Final Fantasy for NES 8.7 Dragon Warrior III for NES 8.7 Final Fantasy III for NES 8.9 Dragon Warrior IV for NES 8.9 Contra for NES 9.0 River City Ransom for NES 9.1 Super Mario Bros. / Duck Hunt for NES 9.1 The Legend of Zelda User for NES 9.2 Tecmo Super Bowl for NES 9.2 Super Mario Bros. for NES 9.4 Super Mario Bros. 3 for NES
SNES
9.7 Chrono Trigger for SNES 9.5 Final Fantasy III for SNES 9.5 The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past for SNES 9.5 Super Metroid for SNES 9.5 Super Mario World for SNES 9.4 Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars for SNES 9.3 EarthBound for SNES 9.3 Secret of Mana for SNES 9.3 Super Mario All-Stars for SNES 9.3 Tales of Phantasia for SNES
Honorable mentions 9.2 Seiken Densetsu 3 for SNES 9.2 Terranigma for SNES 9.1 Final Fantasy II for SNES 9.1 Kirby Super Star for SNES 9.1 Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest for SNES 9.1 Donkey Kong Country for SNES 9.1 Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island for SNES
Interistingly, the ratings seem to coincide with what the most common criticisms of AirbladeOrange's rankings were.

ohh where is mario kart?!
|
Really disagree with FF at #1, although it was good.
|
Uhm the NES ratings are actually upside down.. the number in front of the game is the user rating so SMB 3 is the best NES game.
|
Chrono Trigger is right where it deserves to be. I love that game
|
User ratings are bad. This shouldn't be the way to make an objective ( lol ) top 10. The best top 10 will always be made by an expert. Also a top 10 with different genres will never be accurate.
Look at the games seriously. Some great choices but they are all rpg or platform. No SFII in a SNES top 10 ? Are you kidding me ? LOL
|
You forgot great games like BoF 1/2 and DK3

An array of opinions describes the opinion of the entire population of consumers, assuming test sample is evenly distributed(or some other distribution that is determined and adjust ratings accordingly) among it.
And those games arent that great, they are good games but not the top of the crop, the culmination of a platform as judged by its users - BF 1 is 8.4, BF 2 8.6, SF 2 8.6, DK3 8.7, Mario Kart admittedly 9.0 so is close to the cut off point of the list.

Oh the memories of Kirby Super Star...but I really missed out on most of the SNES games. But seriously this needs room for E.V.O. Search for Eden. Has anyone played/heard of it? It's true sex.

Secret of mana is definitely one of the most fun games I ever played with friends. It is different from any other RPG before or since as far as I know. The sequels to secret of mana don't come close.
|
As someone who's heavily into retro gaming, those lists seem okay, except for the disturbing lack of Mega Man games.

Although there are 3 characters like in SoM, it's only two player. Thankfully, though, someone also made a hack (that's a bit buggy) to make it 3 player. My friends and I played through it last summer. It was really good. I'd still put SoM slightly above it, but there's a lot of things SD3 did better than SoM. I'd highly suggest checking it out if you're a fan of Secret of Mana.

Looking at those SNES games brings back a wave of nostalgia... that system such awesome games T_T

just wondering what makes ff 3 (and 2 apparently) higher than 6 in SNES department. i fucking loved 6 on snes (although i never played 2 FF 2 or 3)
and wheres sf2 D:

Donkey Kong Country is my favorite game of all time. It's a great list, even if I find it odd that an rpg is at the number one spot.

seems fine, but tecmo super bowl??
|
I'm pretty agreeable with the lists, although I'm deeply saddened that Rock n' Roll Racing isn't on the SNES list.
Seriously.
I still play that game!
|
FUCK, Nintendo is just sooo good! The SNES days were the best, but man, Super Mario Galaxy is just soooooo good!

This list objectively proves that Tecmo Super Bowl is better than Zelda

yo I was just thinking the same thing, DKC was an amazing game for its time and still is. I might just have to emulate it since I never did finish that game as a kid.
|
Goodness, i only owned 2 of those games for the SNES (Mario-all stars, and DK country), I was so deprived of good games when I was young, wish my SNES didn't die on me a few years ago .

im totaly fine with chrono trigger on top, unarguably best snes game ever. planed to replay it once more when it came out on psx but the loading times sucked donkey balls.
im missing mega man & street fighter 2 in these lists tho.
|
The NES list needs Master Blaser.
Dunno about Chrono Trigger. Even as a big Square fan back in the day, I found the game not that great compared to FFVI and Secret of Mana.
|
LOL Chrono Trigger at 9.7. The game was good, not THAT good.
|
Who the hell rates NES games on Gamespot anyways?

Yeah, that's a pretty good list - I don't agree with it 100% (chrono trigger would be rank 10~ for me, but oh well).

This is the only game I could possibly say was better than Starcraft. I still play it. Hell, I went and fixed my SNES for the sole reason of playing this game.

This measures popularity, and pretty much nothing else When I think of objective measurements, I usually hope the only criteria isn't just a popularity contest.
|
There is a glaring lack of Mega Man on this list. I agree with SMB3 being the best game on NES though. So good. Oh shit there's no DKC on the SNES list this is an outrage.
|
Chrono Trigger will be released on virtual console this summer!
|
Love Chrono Trigger/FFVI
AMAZING RPGs

The lack of Mega Man and Zelda on the NES were the only things I noticed right away. I don't know why, but I never cared for Dragon Warrior at all as a kid or even now... and Tecmo was a friggin awesome sports game at the time, pretty much the most depth ever at that point. Dunno if it deserves in over any of the Mega Mans (I loved 2) or the first Zelda.
|
I would guess that since the ratings were assigned after the internet became widespread ans we were already in the PSX era, they don't reflect how good they were when they were released but rather how well they hold up.
Also JRPG fans tend to be more retro than most other genre fans.

Popularity would be the number of votes for a game. All the games in the list easily fill the popularity criterion(of having at least 100 votes on gamespot) so it is irrelevant in regards to them.
