Mississippi River Flood!

So my office over looks the Mississippi River and Its pretty high right now. The river currently is forecast to crest at 45 feet at the Memphis gauge -- 11 feet above flood stage and the highest level since the 1937 flood. They're are rumors that they may have to cancel Memphis in May BBQ Fest

I will try to take daily pictures to track the progress.

This is the first I've read about this. I hope it doesn't get as bad as you say it will, there's already enough disasters happening.

Pretty crazy stuff.

"Right now the Mississippi river is in the process of going through what we call an epic flood, meaning it's more than historic, it's more than a 100 year flood, it's more like a 500 year flood," he said. "We could flood many homes, businesses, close down factories, people could drown."

Yeah I wish I had a before picture but the tree line you see in the middle of the water is the start of Arkansas which Is underwater as far as I can see.

Clarification for people who may not understand what a "100 year flood" means.

A 100 year flood has a probability of occurring once every 100 years. This means that in any given year, there is a 1% chance of the flood occurring and 500 year flood would have a 0.2% chance of occurring in any given year.

Anyways, this isn't really surprising at all. A river that floods... who knew they could do that?! I just hope the people there have their flood insurance. However, it is unfortunate that the May BBQ fest may get canceled, because that would actually be a tragedy.

1937? I think you mean 1927

That's pretty insane, I hope whatever damage results will be minimal at best. Is there any danger to that area or anything?

Also in Memphis, I haven't been down town yet, but the Wolf River is flooded really bad in a couple different places at least that I've seen.

The rain we've had here around Cincinnati has been torrential all month. I'm amazed the Ohio River crested at only 55 feet here. Hopefully you guys don't get too hard by all this.

Just updated with some more pictures. Its getting pretty real here. I went ahead and filled up with gas and made sure we had plenty of water at my house. We're kinda of all just uneasily waiting for the river to crest. We are keeping our eyes on the levee that they're about to blow up to help save Ciaro Illinois.

Uploaded more picture updates. Hearing reports of sewers that are starting to backup downtown on beale street. River is expected to crest on the 8th.
