Scholarships From Websites

EZjijy United States1039 Posts April 18 2011 03:56 GMT #1 So how valid are these online scholarship searches like FastWeb and Scholarship? I'm currently a high school senior with decent grades (3.7GPA, 1910 SAT, 29 ACT, some extra curricular), but weren't enough for my enrolled uni (Purdue) to give me any sort of scholarships. I did apply for fafsa and got well over the necessary amount I need for college, but I rather rely on those for too long. My parents told me they would only support me for my first year so I'm going to need some sort of income so that I can prevent the need to go to my financial aid. Also, you can also get scholarships during college right?

KurtistheTurtle United States1966 Posts April 18 2011 04:04 GMT #2 dont bother with fastweb unless you're a minority, tons of people go on there and the time and effort will produce better results elsewhere. Lots of places have scholarships which aren't claimed like local churches, local mason lodges, elks clubs, basically any organization. get your parents asking, ask your friends, your acquaintances and get the word out so people who have information you want can get it to you. there are also books with compiled lists tons of scholarships...don't remember what they're called though. RedJustice United States1004 Posts April 18 2011 05:11 GMT #3 Check with your high school counseling office for information about local scholarships. Fastweb is a site that I never bothered with. Too spammy for my tastes. However, CollegeBoard was a great resource for me to find some scholarships I was actually qualified for. (And got). Many local businesses, even if chains, give out scholarships to local students, so check the customer services for info. Finally remember that many colleges give special sponsored scholarships to students based off their area of study, so once you have been there for a year, you may qualify for many college specific scholarships. (or even your freshman year, depending)

At most schools, your department will have a few scholarships every year and there are also some endowed scholarships/ university scholarships available each year. If you keep your grades up, you might have a decent shot at those.
