Using an Obs to snipe units on the ramp

turamn United States1374 Posts April 01 2011 01:11 GMT #1 So, I've never seen anyone do this before and I thought it was pretty damn clever. I just played a PvP where my opponent was sitting on one base, with sentries at his ramp to force field, as normal. He was teching up on one base, presumably to collosus. He left his sentries on the front of his ramp...so I think...why not get an obs, put it there, and shoot them from the low ground with my stalkers? Move my obs over to the front of the ramp, position over his sentries. I move 5-6 stalkers up and snipe ALL of his sentries. He was basically crippled at that point and lost shortly after. My point -- Why don't we see more people do this? I don't see any pros try to do this and I've never had anyone try to do this to me. Is this too risky? It seems like it would be really easy for Terran to use a scan to achieve the same goal. Your thoughts and insight are appreciated!

ReketSomething United States6012 Posts April 01 2011 01:16 GMT #2 You would get an obs and shoot things from the low ground. Its hard to fight up a ramp. The issue is in pvp is that if you get robo first 4 gate is strong so its hard to get to the phase where the person who went robo is the agressor.

turamn United States1374 Posts April 01 2011 01:18 GMT #3 Watching the replay, we both seemed to get a robo around the same time. He was just not being active at all with any of his units. I can definitely see that being the case in a high level game, though.

Both armies are extremely active making it hard to pick off units that are standing still near a ramp. It gets progressively harder to do at higher levels of play. I do this after I successfully fend off a four-gate with a 3-stalker into robo because I have higher tech and they usually 1 base zeal/colossus. At that point, before they get colossus up, you can definitely snipe off buildings and units while also constantly scouting tech and unit composition. What builds did you both go for?

turamn United States1374 Posts April 01 2011 01:47 GMT #6 I went for 1 Gate into robo then dropped 2 more gates. He went 2 gates, then robo, then bay. He was trying some insane rush to collosus EDIT: To add, it seems like this would be more reasonable for Terran to try against a Protoss. If they are going with some early pressure, more than likely, the Protoss is going to snag a couple of sentries to hold the ramp. Seems like it would be pretty reasonable for them to drop a scan and start shooting away at sentries.
