As we have all come to know, many of us suck, or at least that is what we tell ourselves. You will hear many times in the strat forums little phrases that just re-emphasize how much we as a community suck. I understand why we down ourselves (or most of us anyway). We want to improve, and for most people, the way to improvement is to acknowledge your flaws. If you can acknowledge flaws then you can focus on them, improve them, and get better. The issue for me comes from the fact that you have a really weird thing happen, where nobody is good except for the pros, and even then, you will hear them from time-to-time say that they sucked in a certain game or something.

So for my TL community I offer perspective (i know the pros don't need this), you are amazing! Especially the platinum and higher players. Think about it for a second. The way the laddering system works is that the top 40% of all active players are in Platinum and higher, whereas the bottom 60% are in Gold or lower. If you are in Platinum, Diamond, or Masters then you are above average. And for Diamond, you are really good. And for Masters, you are amazing. And for pros, you are pros. Most of you guys on TL are actually quite good, give yourselves some credit. If you went up against your friends who are in bronze, silver, or gold (sorry for TL member in those leagues. KEEP FIGHTING!) you would actually destroy them. I know for me, most of my friends aren't even close to as good as me at this game, and I'm only 3k diam. I could probably 3v1 (b/c only 3 of my irl friends play SC2, the others do other weird things like socialize pfff who needs that) and still win pretty easily, and yet I say constantly that I suck at this game.

So this is mostly just a you are amazing blog. If you feel you suck just think about the percentages. So, for example, let's say you are on a losing streak, and you feel like you are just awful at this game, think about all those players beneath you in skill level (make your ego massive) and go into the next game and act like you are hot shit. Act like you are a god damn bonjwa: "What? Oh that supply block? I planned that so my timing push could have that many more unit-producing structures/larva attached to it. It was all planned. I AM AMAZING!"

Now i'm starting to get off track and starting to go into mentality behind SC2 games. And this has a lot to do with match-ups in SC2. Many times, if a person goes into a match up thinking that it is imba or just impossible for them to beat they actually will not win because Starcraft 2 is as much of a game of mental strategy as well as mental state-of-mind. Despite what you may think, when you play from a perceived disadvantage you will play worse. This is especially common in the ZvZ and PvP mirror match-ups. People constantly say that it is all rock-paper-scissors, and even though this might be true, clearly there is a way to win consistently (as oGsMC has shown), and I think most of that comes down to mentality plus a couple of other in-game things as well.


I'm not saying never admit you are wrong, just don't constantly pretend that you are awful at this game when you are better than most at playing it. That is all I have to say. And as I said before, to all the Gold leaguers and below: KEEP FIGHTING!! You'll make it up to grandmasters one day and you can say that you suck too.

Sometimes its really easy to forget that you're an above average player when you are losing to a proxy gateway that for some reason your retarded brain forgot to send a probe to check for.

But I agree with you. While focusing on getting better is important and should be your main drive, its also very important to step back and take some confidence from your existing accomplishments from time to time, rather than forever chasing improvement.

You're trying to focus too much on the wrong category of players in which to give a confidence boost to. The players who need the push are the Gold league and below players. Not to say that we shouldn't give congrats to those in Platinum league or above, but most of the players in this category have no reason to be down in the dumps (for the above reasons stated). And saying things like you can 1v3 Gold league and below players (whether true or not) is only further destroying the morale that most players in this category have very little of (especially when this website is supposed to be a haven for them to learn and get better, not publically be blasted). You're praiseing the players that are in the transitional phase where they don't need as much praising as they used to. Yet all you say is "keep fighting" as if that makes it okay for publically obliterating their morale seconds before. Seems like the priorities of who needs help and who needs less of it are somewhat mixed up here. Just my two cents though.
I am a Diamond league Protoss player in need of any form of help that can be given. If you believe you can help please contact me. I really want to improve more than anything and just need a form of guidance and small push in the truely right direction.

Sucking is relative to the competitive scene.
And the competitive scene is at a much higher level than the general population. Who cares if you can beat players who have hardly any RTS experience and just play for fun?

They call it: being good enough at a game to know you are bad.
