I would say I've had plenty. Met a handful of them irl. These days, pretty much all of them are from the sc2 community.

Wow, sorry for the loss mate.

I know a friend of mine, we hardly talk now, but during DoTA, we chatted and played a hell lot (we met even before then).

We've known each for maybe 9 years? I still talk to him but he's doing his thing and I'm doing mine. I thought SC2 would reconnect us since he was a huge WC3 RTS player but he just couldn't get into the groove and thus here we are.

I've quit MSN and I believe he still logs in.

Sorry to hear about your loss.

I have lots of friends that my only communication with them is the internet. Some it has got to the point of exchanging cell phone numbers for texting.

sorry for your loss.

I actually knew someone I met on Battle.Net during 6th grade, and he was a year older than me. I talked to him till my freshmen year of college when I noticed he stopped going on AIM. I actually logged on his screenname (which I gave to him, so I had access to the PM.

Apparently when I logged in people were messaging me thinking I was his mother and yeah...that's how I found out. He jumped off a building and killed himself. idk why, the guy seemed like he was having a good life. Really smart person, he helped me out on a lot of things and when I found out I was pretty devastated. :'(

Sorry to hear about that man. That is really rough losing a friend like that. I had a similar experience of a friend I had met online and kept in touch with for a few years and one day I got a phone call from one of our mutual online friends telling me he had shot himself.

Losing a good friend online sucks. Because you can't be there and you feel like you always wanted to reeeaally know them more. I can tell you that you are in the right place. There are plenty of people here who want to make more online friends ^^
You can think I'm wrong, but that's no reason to quit thinking.

I've had some great internet friends over the years, but I think I've lost contact with all of them. I guess the same would be true in life, if it wasn't for facebook and whatnot. I still have great memories though of staying up untill 5 in the morning playing broodwar all night with my clanmates.

wow, really sad to hear about something like this. when i think back to when i spent quite a bit of time playing on SC BW, i had a couple of people who i really enjoyed gaming with and talking to, who i hadn't really thought of until now. all of the friendships kind of just faded away though when people stopped logging on, etc. i've yet to stumble across someone i've really really clicked with that our friendship would traverse b.net to like skype/FB lol, so that we'd keep in touch and talk often even after that initial common interest was gone.

One my SC partner went missing for about 4 months. Turned out he moved, and the ISP at his new location was too stupid to get internet working for months... Frightened me quite a bit.

Currently I haven't seen him online in over a month. Only thing I can do is trying not to worry. If something happens to him I'll probably never know, since I know nobody who knows him in RL.

Thanks for your support guys! I find it quite comforting that there are more people who have the same experienced the same as me! After I come back from India I will maybe have time to play BW, and then I will try to find an awesome 2v2 partner!

I have two internet friends who I've never met in real life. The rest are officially "real" friends because I've met them after meeting them online. One time one of my friends went away for a long time and I got really worried, turns out he was writing a book and didn't want to be bothered.

I had an internet friend of several years back when I played wow. Eventually, my parents took my computer away for half a school year because I wasn't doing well in my classes, and she transferred servers in that time and the only contact info I had from her was myspace, but everyone was switching over to Facebook at that time and as such, I never heard from her again.

It's a shame, Internet friends can be some of the best friends you have IMO. For me atleast, it's much easier to convey my thoughts over the Internet than in real life, and she was able to get me over that 'afraid to talk to girls' thing. We weren't in a relationship or anything, we were just friends. We were planning to meet up sometime when she came to new York over the summer but meh..

That is absolutely terrible Arnstein. I really feel for you.

I don't have any real internet friends right now... I have a couple of "buddies", but nothing that would qualify as real friendship. But I had a group of really close internet friends, but these relationships (like so many in real life) ended when we moved on in our lives.

If anyone of you are interested in this little story, you can read the spoiler:

+ Show Spoiler +

A few years ago (don't actually know the exact time, but it was more than 5 years ago), I played Warcraft 3 competitively and was part of a clan that consisted of a group of really close friends. We were a handful of guys who would be talking via Ventrilo (something like Teamspeak) all day long, every day, practice a ton of WC3 and talk about all kinds of shit.

We went through sooo much together. We recruited new members to our clan, we slowly rose in the ranks of the German ESL Clan League and even into the highest league there at one point (it was called "ESL Premier League" back then, I'm not even sure if it still exists). We went through highs and lows together.

While most of our talk in the group was either discussion about the game or about random funny crap, I also remember spending hours at a time in the night 1on1 with one of the guys talking about more complex things, and having real conversations. It was so awesome.

Sadly though, maybe 3 years after we initially all met, everything started to fall apart. Real life issues prevented me from playing, some of the guys stopped to and eventually everything started to fall apart. That was also the time when I took a very long hiatus from eSports (about 4 years until the SC2 beta came out I think), since I couldn't find a good team where I had that same feeling again.

Without a doubt, I'd call the years with them the best time of my life so far. Having a group of real friends in your clan and going through all these things together with them is just an experience that I didn't have ever again.
