I know a friend of mine, we hardly talk now, but during DoTA, we chatted and played a hell lot (we met even before then). We've known each for maybe 9 years? I still talk to him but he's doing his thing and I'm doing mine. I thought SC2 would reconnect us since he was a huge WC3 RTS player but he just couldn't get into the groove and thus here we are. I've quit MSN and I believe he still logs in.

I have lots of friends that my only communication with them is the internet. Some it has got to the point of exchanging cell phone numbers for texting.

I actually knew someone I met on Battle.Net during 6th grade, and he was a year older than me. I talked to him till my freshmen year of college when I noticed he stopped going on AIM. I actually logged on his screenname (which I gave to him, so I had access to the PM. Apparently when I logged in people were messaging me thinking I was his mother and yeah...that's how I found out. He jumped off a building and killed himself. idk why, the guy seemed like he was having a good life. Really smart person, he helped me out on a lot of things and when I found out I was pretty devastated. :'(

Losing a good friend online sucks. Because you can't be there and you feel like you always wanted to reeeaally know them more. I can tell you that you are in the right place. There are plenty of people here who want to make more online friends ^^

Currently I haven't seen him online in over a month. Only thing I can do is trying not to worry. If something happens to him I'll probably never know, since I know nobody who knows him in RL.

It's a shame, Internet friends can be some of the best friends you have IMO. For me atleast, it's much easier to convey my thoughts over the Internet than in real life, and she was able to get me over that 'afraid to talk to girls' thing. We weren't in a relationship or anything, we were just friends. We were planning to meet up sometime when she came to new York over the summer but meh..

I don't have any real internet friends right now... I have a couple of "buddies", but nothing that would qualify as real friendship. But I had a group of really close internet friends, but these relationships (like so many in real life) ended when we moved on in our lives. If anyone of you are interested in this little story, you can read the spoiler: + Show Spoiler + A few years ago (don't actually know the exact time, but it was more than 5 years ago), I played Warcraft 3 competitively and was part of a clan that consisted of a group of really close friends. We were a handful of guys who would be talking via Ventrilo (something like Teamspeak) all day long, every day, practice a ton of WC3 and talk about all kinds of shit. We went through sooo much together. We recruited new members to our clan, we slowly rose in the ranks of the German ESL Clan League and even into the highest league there at one point (it was called "ESL Premier League" back then, I'm not even sure if it still exists). We went through highs and lows together. While most of our talk in the group was either discussion about the game or about random funny crap, I also remember spending hours at a time in the night 1on1 with one of the guys talking about more complex things, and having real conversations. It was so awesome. Sadly though, maybe 3 years after we initially all met, everything started to fall apart. Real life issues prevented me from playing, some of the guys stopped to and eventually everything started to fall apart. That was also the time when I took a very long hiatus from eSports (about 4 years until the SC2 beta came out I think), since I couldn't find a good team where I had that same feeling again. Without a doubt, I'd call the years with them the best time of my life so far. Having a group of real friends in your clan and going through all these things together with them is just an experience that I didn't have ever again.
