That being said one of my classmates has one of these and he likes it. It seems to preform as well as anything that small can. If you're worried about speed I'd opt for the 4gigs of ram and a SSD if you can afford it. double edit: Processor speed isnt a big deal when you have a dedicated graphics card. The only thing that might lag is like Tug of war custom maps that have 30 billion units fighting at once and need lots of damage calculations. | ||

1.7 GHz does sound pretty low for an Alienware, are you sure it's not a quad-core? Posting all of the specs would be helpful. | ||

My current desktop has a 2.8ghz corei7 but it frequently overlocks itself to 3.5 or higher while under load and underclocks to 1.9ghz when im just surfing the web. | ||

it runs MTW2 / shogun 2 horribly. OK with civ 4 /5 (meaning, you can play on large / huge maps without the screen jerking from lag in later turns) it runs games like new vegas / dragon age / mass effect 2 without a hitch on factory settings. it requires a program called throttlestop to really get the I5/I7 performance out but having a pretty good desktop at home makes my expectations high so perhaps it might be so bad for other people. still, if your expectations are being able to carry a laptop with 1 hand + play SC2 1v1s, this is fine, other than that, there are probably many other (bigger) models that make much more sense. | ||

Honestly I imagine razer releasing the switchblade. it didn't look like it can even run wc3 at constant 30fps in the video, much less any remotely new games. I think those new "cloud computing" services like OnLive or Gaikai will revolutionize portable laptop/netbook gaming in a few years. Improving that technology might be easier than cramming shit that generates a ton of heat into an ultra small chassis. | ||

i got this laptop for $400, runs sc2 perfectly on low, didn't really try higher settings yet because its arbitrary running sc2 on higher graphics; everything is fine on LOW pokebunny, i don't really know your background, but if you're a rich kid who doesn't feel bad buying pointlessly expensive stuff, then i guess do whatever you want but alienwares are meant for higher-end gaming, not SC2 you should try to do a bit of research if you're trying to save money, but it all depends on computer purposes and budget | ||

Since you're will play SC2 alot more than other game, tbh it's not that great of an SC2 computer. While it can run majority of other games just fine on High/Med settings (woohoo), SC2 is seriously lackluster even on Low/Med (this is without Overclocking). God knows why this computer can run any other game perfectly fine yet SC2 is just a pain You can overclock the Alienware M11xR2 to run SC2 on Ultra (like 30fps average), but even then it will drain your battery FAST. Also it's just plain annoying to get into bios whenever you feel like playing SC2 and turning it off whenever you're outside without a charger. However, the Size and Design of the Alienware M11x just takes the cake. I know majority of TL don't give two shit about Laptop Design (I dont give a shit how cheap and how much better ASUS is or w/e, it looks ugly as fuck). The compact size of the M11x is just so comfortable and the keyboard is just awesome. Only downside is the trackpad which is fucking terrible. Oh right no CD Drive and only an HDMI port. Besides, with the 100 dollar off coupon and a 10% discount you can cut prices really quickly. Oh right I forgot to write why I bought a Alienware M11x R2, you know why? Because I originally owned a really bad 15inch laptop which weighed like 10 pounds and couldnt even run Warcraft 3 Properly. Photoshop crashed regularly and it was such a bitch to carry to school. Also I didnt play any PC games starting from 2006 which made me really really sad. I traveled alot so Desktop wasnt something I could do either ;-; | ||

The best graphics card you could get with a $400 dollar budget is some AMD Integrated graphics. Perhaps your definition of perfectly on low is 15fps? My opinion is this. $700 for a Alienware is truely a great deal. I'm truly amazed at how they managed to pack so much power into a 11 inch laptop. It's not for everyone, but if you want to combine portability with the ability to game, this is the laptop that you want. Plus, it comes at a ridiculously low price. | ||

i have the older one, with the su7300, 4gb ram, so im sure the i3/5/7 will perform much better than mine, and i think they all come with 6gb of ram now i run sc2 on med smoothly (i have it oc'ed at 1.73) and do lots of 4v4s with no issue the main reason i would recommend it is the the size, 11'' is nice and portable, it goes everywhere with me, well anywhere id be likely to play sc2 at univ, i get around 10 hours of battery life on the other intel card, with wifi, but thats just with word, excel and vectorNTI, i keep the alien fx off when im on battery, but leave it on when im plugged in only issue i have with it, is the screen, if you are out in the sunlight, you will get glare, but your eyes will adjust to it for me, since i travel a lot, its my main PC, it tags along with g9x. sadly theres only 3 usb ports and only 1 high power one. i have a cell phone, usb drives, g9x which take up all the slots, but its not bad at home i attach it to my 22'' lcd and usb keyboard, and it works out great. and i paid 1100 for this when it came out a year ago, in march or so, and i felt it was worth it as im happy with it, though i should have waited for the i3/5/7 processors, but i had to get it asap as i was using a god aweful mac and needed something portable and able to run sc2 | ||

And for that money i would be surprised to get something that would play an new-ish games at all. Such a bizarre thing to imagine when you look realistically at the cost of computers, not just "Uuuuh, $710 seems like lots of money, I hope I could get a fucking Ferrari with sports pack and penis enlarger included for that". What on earth kinda world do people live in when they are looking for something to play games on ultra, for £500? You have to be prepared to pay for performance!! It's not even necessarily about being a "rich kid" (a term which comes across, and i find somewhat derogatory by the way)- it's about investing in something, and putting good money into it, so that it won't be a pain in the backside 2 months down the line, for the next 2 years. Don't waste £500 on something dodgy, when you could use £1000 for something you will be very happy with for a good long while. | ||

Just saw this post. i have an m11x r2 (i5) with 4gb and an ssd. This is my primary computer. but i don't play a ton of games. i will try not to post anything that has already been said, and instead try to put in new information. my situation: i travel alot for work, which means sitting in hotel rooms by myself, so i wanted something decent. i also need to travel with a work laptop, and didn't want the burden of carrying two heavier machines. this thing is very light, small and a great form factor. i actually fit this in a normal laptop bag, with my 14inch work laptop (hp) without a problem. this is a huge feature for me. i bought the laptop refurbished from dell in early september of 2010, i paid about 600 shipped with 4gb ram and bluetooth, i added a 240gb ssd drive around thanksgiving. hdmi out is awesome, basically you can send the video and audio out hdmi, so you can plug this thing into pretty much any hd tv, and watch a movie or something, i do this alot in my bedroom and its pretty sweet. windows 7 has some awesome plug and play for secondary display devices. i do keep a display port to vga adapter in my laptop bag, for the occasions where i need to plug into a projector or something. i do have an external cdrom, but almost never use it, its not needed, i definitely dont carry this around with me. i have played only the following games on it heroes of newerth - runs flawless high settings war3/dota - runs good on intel graphics (good battery life) league of legends - runs kind of shitty, but playable. my complaints are the following. no gigabit lan sucks, my house is now gigabit, and not having a cdrom means i store a ton of stuff on the network, the fact that this doesnt have gigabit lan is retarded. usb 3.0. would have liked to see usb 3.0 on this, but its rare and there arent alot of laptops with it. i actually held off on buying this when the r1 came out, because i was hoping r2 would have usb 3.0 when r2 came out and didnt have usb 3.0 i bought it anyway, as the comparing models didn't come close in size/speed/price | ||

someone above said only one high power usb. the small lightning bolt on that usb port does not imply high power, it simply means that you can charge a device in this port with the laptop off. but i believe the laptop needs to eb on outlet power, (there may be a setting in the bios to override this) there is no high power usb port. another person above said they get 10 hours around campus, this is definitely a lie, as doing absolutely nothing on the machien, with the screen at the dimmest setting will give you about 6 hours. however it does last for a long time in standby. | ||
