so its midnight here in canada. so i decided to call a goshiwon to find out if rooms are boked for the time i'll be staying there. so after about 20 minutes dealing with the process of figuring out how to call them. i finally reached them

the women answered the phone, and i asked if there was anyone there whom i culd speak english too and ask about the rooms. she spoke very little engligh, enough to tell me that all rooms are full.

of course trying to be a little more clear, i asked if there would be rooms avaiable end of march to beginning of april.

to be honest i don't think she understood me. and sounded confused and said no booking, or somthing like that.

so now i'm on to see if i can't find other affordable goshiwons to ask about rooms.

otherwise its going to be a long night, having to try and decifer what they are saying on the fly will not be easy.

hopefully i can come up with some answers tonight in regards to a place to stay.

i will update this as i make more calls. hopefully it won't be too many more.

Here you go, some simple korean phrases you can learn before going to Korea. GLHf!
You mean ESPORTS isnt a synonym for SC2? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ -Proud owner of a Filco Majestouch 2 with Cherry Blue Switches- BW or SC2? Why not both?

My goshiwon (by Konkuk Station.) has free rooms as far as I'm aware. The staff speak a bit of English because they're used to dealing with me (and we have a guy who is near fluent right now.) so if you're desperate then pm me and I can hook you up with a room as soon as you'd like. (It's about 370,000 a month, but it depends on what size room you take so it might be cheaper.)

Not to sound bitchy or anything, but why didn't you sort this out before you came? o.O;

Oh right, I totally misunderstood then. Well, you're not likely to find many goshiwons with english speaking staff tbh. Mine has only had about 3 people who spoke more than a couple of words in nearly three years. The offer still stands though, if you need help since I've done it before for other non-Korean speaking visitors.

yeah i know, i'm hoping for some basic communication though, enough to ask about the rooms.

thanks for the offer too, right now my budget is too low to afford something that expensive. my range for a goshiwon is under 250,000 won.

I had to have a bilingual friend come with me to get a room at my place. It's pretty tricky since there are rules to be explained etc. If your budget is that low and you're in need of an english speaking staff then it might be better to go for a hostel? Some of them are pretty nice, but I'm not 100% sure about prices. Otherwise possibly sign up to Dave's ESL Cafe and post a thread asking for help there in the General Discussion forum. You're bound to get some replies pretty quickly.

I'll do that if i can't find one in the next couple of days. i'm not really looking for staff that speak english, but one that knows what i am saying should suffice. i have one more i'm going to call tonight and ask.

Thanks for the tips though. You are indeed awesome.

hmm any family or friends that live there? you can just sleep with them if you wanted to. Also 찜질방's are a good choice if you dont find a place to stay. They're like gigantic bath houses that you could sleep in. I had to stay there for a couple of weeks because my friend in pusan had left for somewhere but the pc bangs were like 2 blocks down so i could just walk there and get my butt owned in sc

I googled goshiwon and they look like reasonable places to stay for a month. I'll consider them if I go to korea!

I lived in a Goshiweon while I was in Korea. It was the smallest place that I've ever lived in.

After a while though it doesn't get so bad... but just make sure that you don't spend all day in there -- the walls get to you.

... and make sure you get a shower drain plug... and a good blanket. Shit stinks and the heater is rarely turned on.

I was near Wangsimni station, though.
