I need to plan a event for 50 new resident students between 19-30 who are male and female. It should be something that is not only fun, but helps build a bond or community between them.
The restraints are: no alcohol 450$
Helpful resources: access to a gym park football field
I was thinking of a volleyball tournament with prizes or a dinner because its a pretty easy to play universal. Additionally it builds friendships and communities. I'm sure there are far better ideas out there but 450 is pretty small.
Do you guys have any ideas? or what would you like to do?
maybe I should just throw a lan in the gym and put the money towards the prize pool lol.
Wait wait wait, 19-30 and no alcohol? :[ What duh hell is this?
Now, what you should do is you should take a walk in the park while people setup stages in your gym for a SC showmatch, use your money to hire professionals like.... mmm... idk, TLO, Idra, Haypro? maybe boxer :S, well, then you know, setup your computers and stuff, get SC2, they get here, play like a BO7, use the rest of your money to pay them, then you know, go out there and play football :D..... And put like.... one gamer on each team as captains :D.
lol yeah, I thought i'd give it a shot though. When it comes to information seeking TL has never failed me. I just don't see a RA party planning thread anywhere
19 is legal for drinking in Canada and many school events have beer I believe. Not sure what OP's situation is, maybe just no drinking is allowed in the dorms?
Along with whatever fun activity you decide to do, grill hamburgers and hotdogs. Get some name brand soda and some cookies. Make sure to get an option for vegetarians. Good food makes for a good event.

Generally it's a hassle to arrange drinking parties with the school. When I was an RA we'd throw mocktail parties so we could have excuses to look fancy (and avoid ruining our nice clothes via alcohol-induced vomiting).
Volleyball tournament is a nice idea, but do you have the appropriate weather/locale? And, you gotta be sure they'll come in the first place.
Any more demographic info on your dorm, besides the age range? Also, what's the occasion for this event?
The event is just a required event to be put on by RAs so nothing special. Weather would be warm enough to play something like football, but not too toasty.
The dorms not immediately close to much except for a few malls and a sky-train station.
mocktail party is a pretty neat idea! I figure it should be something simple enough that isn't a hassle.

Agreed. Also, playing football/volleyball if you have the weather for it is pretty cool as well.
I'm assuming this is for O-Week? (Orientation Week)
Have you tried capture the flag? That always gets people to show up and is a lot of fun, to boot.
EDIT: It's also super cheap, so you can have a wicked cook out afterward (burgers, hotdogs, vegan burgers for those hippie college hipsters, corn, chicken breast, potato salad, etc.). Barbecue seems the way to go. Free food! College kids are starving. I personally trawl my school's event page for events that are likely to be catered so I can swoop in at the end and take home the leftover mini-sandwiches or sushi or spanakopitas or whatever they're serving.
