Hi all, this is going to be a rant.
Just watched the Clash of the titans. Epic B07. Loved it. Then we see Inc's big announcement. Awesome news for e-sports and the north American scene.
Naturally I want to open up TL to see everyone's reaction. I don't know why I was surprised at the amount of whining and complaining, but I was. Good god people. Look at what they are doing, its freaking amazing. I think that even if it was the top 200 players in the world with a 1 million dollar prize then half of TL would whine and complain about it.
It makes me sad that something this amazing can happen and tons of people come back with this super negative reaction. For once please appreciate the hard work others others are putting into the community.
I for one am super excited about 2011 and whats to come for both TL and the NA SC community.

The vocal minority thrives on the internet but no matter what they say, there is no doubt that the NASL will be extremely successful.

I agree. For some reason this time I got really frustrated with it all.

the Clash of the Titans was as epic as the psp2 is, not much.
But I like the NASL annoncement, but I am not amased by it.

appreciate the blog man. I can't help but be brought down a peg or two because of it as well.
hard to sift through the shit and get excited.. but I am.
We are going to make this great and I hope/wish most of the community would seek to HELP make it as big as it can be as opposed to random hating.
|
It will pass, it was just a lead on after a touch and go event that brought this about.
Thankfully, someday we will look back on this drama and laugh.
Edit: @ Inc, I dont think theres anything useful to gain by reading stuff untill the dust has settled.

Be proud man there is more than enough of hype for this year with NA esports, also great work casting tonight ^_^

Unfortunately the Live Report thread turned into one big bandwagon of hate. Yes, there were a few problems with the stream and I think people were just so hyped beyond belief that they expected more then could be delivered. I myself got a bit disappointed when the stream lagged but it cleared up and the matches were damn amazing so I'm hyped up for this anyway.
Really, do not listen to the whiners INcontroL. An unfortunate number of circumstances aligned to make your announcement kind of bleak, mostly the fact that it was what everyone was expecting. For next time, don't hint at it so much and you can actually shock people

I think this might be very accurate. I was so hyped that even the not synced sound didn't bother me. Production quality was still sweet. Can't wait for what's coming.

Shit's going to be sick, and I for one will appreciate being able to watch pro Starcraft 5 days a week without having to stay up till 5am.
|
I am very pissed off about the negative response in that thread. I let my opinion well known there as well.
I mean seriously, at the top end of everyones "wonder what it is" ideas were a new league. Never in a F'ing million years did I think that thats what it could be.
Thank you Geoff, your hype was well worth it to me.

FWIW, I'm sure most people think this is amazing. Hopefully you won't let the loud minority discourage you.

Oh, and I dont pay for GSL. I was considering it, but now that we have our own league outside of korea, I am strongly considering paying for this. How much is it monthly?
|
I'm absolutely shocked the hate something this amazing is so strong.
This is, without a doubt, the biggest thing to happen in Western E-sports...and people are hating on it?
Because a show-match was not casted live?
What?
|
Man it lagged for me but i put the res down to 720 and it went smooth!
it was very good with the iviews, artosis did a good job!
It was great, the games were awesome and NASL is the best thing ever for foreign esports!
thank you incontrol you did a good job today, you momma should be proud!
|
Seriously, i don't get whats wrong with some people. The Showmatch was first class starcraft2, had no waiting times inbetween games AND interviews. There is a 400k $ league anounced, the community gets fucking free streams in different time zones, gets to have a word in the player selection, not even to mention the outlook on many great things to come from a tourney organized by people who know their way around in the starcraft scene. And what is the reaction to that? countless pages of morons? whining.
On another note. The registration for your site is amazingly convenient.

People were hating on the TSL invites even though it included all the GSL winners, Nada and the Emperor himself. I feel like TL should defend their own staff the way they defend anyone else who contributes to the community. There's no way you could get away with belittling someone hard work for no reason.
|
I think its just because its so huge that it maximizes the amount of haters. But i still think the majority of the people are really psyched and supportive of it. (like me :D).
iNcontroL, you and everyone else involved did an amazing job. I hope you guys can know that the majority of us are backing you guys in your tremendous effort bringing esports in full swing in the west. Its amazing!
(all the haters will jump on the bandwagon eventually )

Oh wow, I'm so glad someone blogged this, I was going to do this myself, I was skimming through some of the replies in the thread and shit like this:
On February 22 2011 09:50 xmichaels wrote: You guys are pissing yourself too hard =/ Why this isn't better than GSL:
100k prize pool is in fact SMALLER than GSL @ 128k-ish, not only that but each GSL is 1.5 months versus FOUR months for one NASL tourney. Therefore, none of the top koreans will even bother. I can see code A koreans coming to try their luck though.
Inc. + Gretorp casting, rofl. I've only watched them a couple of times but Gretorp is a tool, sorry. I think Kelly is better than him. Tasteless and Artosis are miles ahead of those two.
This also, in essence, is just a really big online tourney. There's something more interesting about a live tourney.
Lower level of competition as well.
All in all, its a great announcement and all, I'm pretty excited myself to have more Starcraft to watch, however let us not kid ourselves. NASL is not "bigger" or the "mecca of SC2 progaming". http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewpost.php?post_id=8019390
it just gets me so fucking mad, people in the thread act like its the biggest injustice to the world and themselves that the winner of NASL isn't handed the keys to a porsche, a leggy blonde, 1 million dollars and the right to drink with inControl for life.
+ Show Spoiler + I can't help but think, that a large number of complaints are from people who only have less than a year's experience in Competitive gaming, (This isn't a slight against players who only have only played SC2, I expect that there are those that realise what a big deal this is.)
Coming from a brood war background, and even now playing SC2, I'm fucking stoked to play in a tourny where a pair of headphones is the top prize.
In short, great tours don't just happen by throwing money at the problem, hell I would even suggest that the money is always the last thing to consider, great tournaments like the TSL and the OSL happen because people gave a damn, go back and watch the VOD's from the first starleagues, they happen in small studios with low production values, a far cry from finals being held in aircraft hangers.
People who have been on TL longer than I have remember the evolution in size and quality of BW tours, I remember when TSL2 was announced and it was like a comet crashing to earth in my life.
So I'm not worried at all, the team behind NASL love the game, and if NASL is to succeed it needs to be run by people who give a damn.
Everything in eSport is getting bigger and better all the time.
Oh and I will certainly be buying the premium package.
|
I agree with Kerotan's spoiler in the comment above mine. People have short memories, and are spoiled. And I dont want to make too broad of a generalization, but the newer SC2 only fans are the ones I think feel that this was overhype. I doubt any who think back on what we had before outside of korea will feel negatively about this.

@Geoff
I have to admit when I first heard it I was a little disappointed because I thought it would be some kind of SC2 League for everyone with lan centers in all 50 states. To be fair you did hype it THAT much. I think the announcement is compared too often to GSL which only beat you to the punch by a couple months.
After rethinking it and being more realistic the league can only go up from here. So far there have been no established champions and back stories. Once those are in place the league will be phenomenal. Once a champion arises the level of hype will be through the roof. Do you remember when Kim Won Ki won the first GSL? There was epic fan art and awe and overall amazement especially because Zerg was the underdog of the time. The idea of NASL will soon be loved by EVERYBODY. Just wait for it to kick off.
There will be 50. They will see. They will all see.
|
OP, you are a gentleman and a scholar. I got into the Brood War scene right before SC2 was announced and I remember when a 500$ prize pool BW online tourney was a HUGE DEAL. Sometimes I worry that e-sports is moving too fast and it might fall flat on its face, but I have a lot of faith that people like Nazgul, iNcontroL, day[9], gretorp, Artosis, etc. can move e-sports in the right direction.
Just as I pay my monthly $10 for GSL Premium service, I will be most definitely purchasing NASL's Premium service as well
|
the only negative thing i have is that its called "nasal" . that's how i will pronounce it forever.

I pronounce the GSL as "jizzle"
I think anyone from a BW background can really appreciate this new development for ESPORTS. I think the biggest factor is getting the huge financial and professional support, but now that's in place, there are plenty of people who know what is the right direction to bring this league.
Just gotta wait it out now. I'm excited!

TL has had some of its darker days this week. Before tonight, it started with all that kelly milkies drama. So much garbage posted about how bad, not bad, or okay they thought she was. Making one small post wasn't enough for most people, they just had to keep posting. I feel the mods/admins should just start closing discussions that are going no where, whether its mannered or not. maybe i just spend too much time browsing this site, but god damn its giving me headaches to hear the same complaints brought up and the same defenses. When the thread is going no where, i just want it over
but anyway, still super excited about the NASL.
|
Complaint Blog about people complaining about NASL.
That said I've never even played SC2 and I'm stoked for this. I mean damn, when I played bw what prizes were there for winners of wgt/pgt/iccup? No seriously though... were there prizes? I can't remember. I mean god, it use to be the only cool thing America had going for itself with SC was WCG...
|
Great thread and I 100% agree. A lot of the newer posters I don't think have enough perspective on the hugeness of this - this is a really fucking big deal, and they are striving for something happening that hasn't really come this close before - esports in the west.
|
I wasn't able to watch the announcement live (Busy watching the vod now). But reading the news on NASL I'm super stoked. Fuck the haters this is awesome.
|
iNcontroL: I love puppies. Internet troll response: What you got against kittens, asshole???? You hear that folks? GEOFF HATES KITTENS!
It was a great announcement, I can't wait for all that delicious content.

I dislike your tone to be honest ("People like you tend to alienate the community even further." Alienate the community from who?) , I'm not trying to be a dick, aggressive, polarising or otherwise, all I'm trying to point out is, to quote a prime minster: you have never had it so good.
In addition, there is valid criticism, as there always is of any project, but I failed to see any of it thread, perhaps I missed it, inbetween people calling gretorp a terrible caster, saying that the prize pool is 28k less than GSL, while forgetting that it should be a massive deal when prizes are being measured in k on a regular basis.
Again, we aren't trying to be elitist, I specifically said that new people to scene may not be spoiled, but that generally the trend is that people have been around for 2+ years realise how far shit has come.
And if people feel alienated by the call for them to be slightly more appreciative of how much shit has been done, without their help and produced for their consumption, I say let them be alienated, because these people are fucking stupid.
To paraphrase the ten commandments: THOU SHALL CONTRIBUTE TO THE COMMUNITY (SITE) -------
A post script: I don't want to sound like you have to do a particular thing before you can criticise that particular thing, of course you can, but alot of the criticism in the community right now seems to equatable to criticising your toaster for not flying you to the moon.

I'm very excited for this, really. Like a lot of people I might have a couple questions about the format, but I can see how big this really is, and to tell the truth I'M PUMPED!!! :p
What I wonder, is how do you think the community can help make this big? What can we do?

I agree wholeheartedly. TL, and especially live report threads, have become incredibly whiny as of late. People bitch and moan about every little thing. Sure, there are always going to be problems, you can't please everyone, and nothing is going to be perfect, but good god people. Things have been AMAZING lately. The clash of the titans showed us some amazing games on relatively brand new maps, and despite some issues with the audio being out of sync, the production was amazing. Yet the LR thread was full of nothing but people bitching about the fact that it was casted from replays. Then they were complaining that the show itself was pre-recorded. Then there was a ton of balance whine.
And then InControl made probably the most exciting announcement I've heard for western esports. And again people complain about the tiniest things that hardly matter.
This is an amazing time. Esports is booming. Starcraft 2 is getting better and better as people improve as players and the community provides better maps. There are games every single day. There is a ton of free content, as well as a ton of content for a modest fee if you so desire. So please, stop complaining about every small detail and enjoy the amazing ride.
|
I agree. All the complaining that has been going on these past days regarding Kelly Milkies and now NASL has given me a headache. Too much bitching for one man to handle!
