I have one free round trip airline ticket. I can go anywhere in the United States I want. Rather than visiting someone I know I'm leaning toward just going some place new by myself and seeing what it's like to make my own adventure.
I'm from Central New York and have been to Pennsylvania, Ohio, New Hampshire, Virginia, Florida, and Wisconsin. This is not counting airports I have had layovers in or states I have only passed through.
I'm looking for something that has beautiful natural scenery for me to look at and take pictures of but isn't a regular tourist destination. I'm flexible to what time of year I can go and would prefer to stay at the location for about five days. Maybe there is a cool place that has other cool places in a reasonable traveling distance.
I would like to spend as little money as possible but don't mind spending a few bucks for something worthwhile. My main concern here is transportation. However, I don't mind a long walk or a long run for that matter.
If anyone has any suggestions I would really appreciate your input. Thanks in advance.

+1 for California. It is by far the most beautiful, and the housing prices are pretty high. I mean but.

California. I'm currently in Berkeley, I moved here in the summer from Michigan.
Anywhere in California is great, SF is a great place, for one.

Well if NH wasn't [relatively short (compared to the rest of the country)] driving distance from central NY and if you weren't there before, I would have suggested it to you, as there is 8% less sales tax  . Honestly I really enjoy the whole New England area though, it's a nice place to be most of the year. My friend actually has a summer house in Maine, and it's really nice during non-winter parts of the year.

Come to California! San Francisco is great. If you're more into nature/scenery/outdoorsy stuff I highly suggest San Diego.

But really there's so much to do for little or no cost.
Beaches, forests, mountains, waterfalls.
Mainly beaches.
There's lots of little hidden beaches you can find by yourself, or little hideaway waterfalls you can usually enjoy by yourself.

I'll agree with Cali, and I'd suggest Los Angeles because of its proximity to everything. Hollywood, beaches, Disneyland/SeaWorld/Universal Studios, all nice places you should see at one point or another.
Also, San Francisco is worth visiting, but I like LA more because of what's around it. If you have the time, see everything I mentioned.

California also has Yosemite National Park, arguably the greatest natural scenery the U.S. has to offer.

I definitely agree with all of the California/San Francisco suggestions
there are lots of beautiful places to see and interesting people to meet
if you do end up choosing the Bay Area, don't leave without going to the top of the Campanile at UC Berkeley; the view is nothing less than incredible
