For those of you who wear glasses to assist with distance (myopia), what do you do with them when you take them off?

When I'm home it's easy... I put them down on a certain counter (and I always put them in that same spot so I never misplace them like an idiot). Most people who have a tendency to lose them should just make sure they only ever put them down in specific designated spots!

That's not the reason why I made the blog though... What do you do when you are 'out' and you want to take them off? Obviously some people need them more than others... My prescription is -2 diopters which means I need glasses for driving/reading chalk boards, but don't need them really for much else except sometimes for recognizing people from far away. When I am using a computer (assuming the monitor isn't annoyingly far away from the chair) or sitting at a table eating/reading/writing/etc I don't like to have my glasses on.

Actually, if I'm reading something quickly I just look under my lenses which is no big deal but not a good solution for any long-term reading session. In case you did not realize it, I do not need glasses in order to read things close up.

What do you do with your glasses when you take them off while 'traveling'? I see a lot of people hang them from the front collar of their shirt (see pic above). I thought this was a pretty good solution as long as you are careful not to drop food on them or bang them into anything... but a guy I just spoke to at a glasses store told me that's bad for the glasses. He said you are better off putting them down on the counter, for example.

This obviously has some drawbacks. There may not be room to put them down sometimes. Other times they are at risk of getting damaged or dumped off the table when they are exposed, just sitting on the table like that. Other times there is just nowhere to put them down.

Carrying around a case for your glasses does not really seem like an option for me (maybe it would for women who carry purses, which I do not). I think the guy might be exaggerating about the risk of wearing your glasses on your collar below your neck. In addition to providing any insights into these ideas, please share what role glasses play in your life and what you do with your glasses when you don't want to wear them.

If you have a very strong prescription then you probably aren't faced with this problem as you rarely take them off aside from in your bedroom etc. If you only wear reading glasses then that can most likely mean you have the same problem, although the times when you would be taking off the glasses would be very different.

similiar to you, i just have like 2 designated spots, one for sleep, and one for before shower, where i put them, other than that, they are on all day. i don't NEED them to play my computer / read books, but they dont effect doing any of that negatively either though, so i just keep them on...

my friend who takes them off when he doesnt need them does keep a case in his pocket and just carries that.

My eyesight is awful so I keep them on my face. Without my glasses I can see about 6 inches in front of my face. Any further and I can only see colors.

I don't see how hanging glasses from your shirt is bad for them. Did he explain why?

I've heard of research which shows that wearing distance glasses when you don't need them makes your myopia worse... I'm no expert though.

BTW isn't carrying a case a real pain in the butt? In my left pocket I have my wallet and in my right my keys/phone... I don't really have any more room for stuff :/

He didn't fully explain it. He said it's similar to how always removing your glasses from one side means that side is more likely to break first. Something about asymmetrically putting all the weight on one side of the frame can be bad for the frame... not sure if he had a better explanation than that. I'm considering just saying "fuck it" and just hanging them from my shirt whenever it's convenient lol.

I think mine are about -2 too, but I can't read anything small at 20+ cm without my glasses. Without my glasses I'd need to put by eyes 15cm from the monitor to read.

So I pretty much always wear mine(unless I'm sleeping).

I think I sit ~45 cm from the monitor (eyes to monitor) and don't have any noticeable problems reading text.

I carry this bag.

Yes it's a man bag have my phone, wallet, keys, pocket knife, a pen, notes, tissues (I have a cold), lip balm (get dry lips in the winter), my glasses and a few other small random items

If I carry a bigger bag (notebook bag) I put the glasses in that one

edit: I really like my appearance with the bag and otherwise I just put stuff in random pockets and I go around terrified because I think I might have dropped something =P

Also jackets get a little bulky if you keep putting things in the pockets (especially side pockets)

My eyesight is -4.75 iirc. So I can only take it off when i go to sleep. And usually, when i go to sleep, I put it on a shelf close to my bed, no matter if I am at home, or away. The only problem is when im on a trip, sleeping in a tent. Then I usually just fold it, and hang it somewhere above me if possible, or put it under a lot of cloth, and into a corner (so even if I lean upon it, i dont break it).

Basically I have one very important rule, I always put in to the closest safe place possible, because my eye is so bad, that its hard for me to find it if I don't know where it is, and never ever put it on the ground... (I did that only once(!) in my life, and someone stepped on it...)

Fun fact: My housemate has ~-4 glasses aswell, so its pretty funny when we are going somewhere, and can't find our glasses, and who finds one first puts it on, and looks for the other one.

How often do you get a new pair of glasses? i know i get a new pair every other year so it's not a big deal to hang them on my shirt cause they're not gonna break in that amount of time. another thing which could extend the life of ur glasses is sometimes hanging them on the left side of the frame and then next time hanging them from the right.

Haha yeah that's a good idea I also was just thinking about... alternating the side I hang them.

I like to get special frames which cost a lot extra so I generally don't want to get a new one every year or two.... same with the lenses actually; since I get extra features including extra thin, transitions, anti-glare coating etc, I have to pay a lot despite having vision insurance so I don't want to change my lenses too frequently.

I'm not sure about the set of letters that comes after the number, but both of my eyes are -4 and without them I can't see 6 inches in from of my face clearly (yes, I have actually measured this!). So the glasses go on in the morning when I get up and come off when I got to bed. On normal days they go off on my stack of two Bibles next to my alarm clock and sit on the top of the toilet when showering.

When I worked in industrial plants I needed to wear safety glasses over my glasses or contacts (even though OSHA heavily frowns upon wearing contacts in ANY industrial setting). When I'd get in the "safe zones" I almost always put my safety glasses on top of my head (very convenient since I was in and out a lot). If there was a meeting I'd hook them on my shirt or leave them in my office. The earplugs were also a nice accessory and perpetually draped around my neck. Speaking of accessories, when I worked my inventory job I kept a pen behind my ear!

Before I got contacts, I would put it in a case and then in my pocket. Left pocket wallet and keys, right side phone and case. It worked fine for me.

I cant imagine wearing it below your collar. It seems uncomfortable and you have to be mindful not to have it drop. I also personally think people wearing it like that makes them look retarded but that may be just me (both people who do that for sunglasses and glasses). Its because I think that people are doing that to look cool or fashionable rather than practical reasons.

I have tried this but it just feels like a case is too big for a side pocket... ESPECIALLY with a phone in there.

It really isn't uncomfortable in my experience... and you don't have to be careful unless you are doing headstands or something...

I really think you have the wrong idea about this. It's just because there's nowhere better to put them.

As soon as you said Man Purse, I thought of this.

I need glasses, but the optometrist disagrees (I'm far-sighted). However, my family generally keeps their glasses near their coats. My mother has these foldable glasses that's no bigger than lipstick.

I have almost exactly the same situation as you. Generally the places I like to put them are:
-coat pocket
-pants pocket away from keys (not jeans though, too tight)
-laptop bag (if I'm on campus)

Honestly, I take terrible care of my glasses and their falling apart but I've had them for like, 5 years. I just need a new pair =P

really, my highest priority is making sure my glasses are safe, so i fold it and tuck a leg in my shirt like in OP's pic, even if it might look goofy. these things are expensive, and that feels a lot less prone to smashage than pockets/backpack etc

Does anyone else put there glasses here when taking a shower? I wanna know if its just me.
In Hungry Hungry Hippos there are no such constraints—one can constantly attempt to collect marbles with one’s hippo, limited only by one’s hippo-levering capabilities.

When I go to sleep I always put them on my night stand.
When I'm taking a shower I always put them on the corner of the counter.

If I'm out and about I try to avoid having to take them off at all costs, but if something requires me to do so I try and put them in a loose jacket pocket or pants pocket (non-jeans) to avoid me accidentally squishing them/etc. I never ever carry my case with me though, much less even use it at home (bad habit? You tell me!)

The only time I ever seem to lose mine is when they're on my face and I don't realize, hahaha. @_@

Except mine don't stay that way so I have to turn it so lenses face behind me.

But this is sunglasses, I don't wear actual glasses, does this count?

That looks really absurd to me, but I admit I've never tried it. I usually just put my glasses atop my folded clothes. I'd be too afraid of them to fall if they were all the way up there.

how do you guys clean your glasses? sometimes the cloth that comes with my glasses just won't do, and just moves the grease around

I buy lense wipes which are sorta similar to wet-naps at restaurants... I do my glasses, then cell phone screen, then psp, then watch all with 1 wipe once a day usually.

In the 'field' I take a fresh tissue and gently wipe them which isn't ideal but is better than nothing sometimes.

Erm, never take them off, or put them in a case in my pocket or my bag. When I shower, there's a counter beside the washroom door that I use.

But I try not to wear them anymore, since I'd rather have my eyesight get better naturally.

You know glasses making your vision worse isn't true right?

I wear them pretty much all the time, my eyes are terrible (something like -7.0, not really sure).
When sleeping I just put them on one of my clocks.

I'm sure my eyeglasses would get greasy and annoy the hell out of me, but the safety glasses didn't bother me as much. The lenses were already a bit opaque and, since the plant had a humid and wet atmosphere, fogging and random droplets weren't uncommon. Plus they scratched easily, so even clean they didn't look perfect. What's a little grease on top of all that?

Still, I cleaned my safety glasses a few times a day too (the hot breath and tshirt method i'm sure contributed to the scratches).

I have 3 pair of glasses, one for every situation and well should fit to the clothes. I have to wear them all the time or i would miss even my mother on the street .
i would not put them in the shirt since i would be affraid whenever i bend forward they would fall out, so i rather have them on the head.
Easiest way to clean is just hot water to remove dust and everything that could scratch and dry it with a clean dishtowel.
