Question on internet ads on sites and adblockers

Do simple text/image ads that get blocked by Adblockers effect a site getting paid at all? Like does the site get paid every time an ad shows up on someone's computer. Does it record the ad showing up at all? Or do sites only get paid extra if someone actually clicks on the ad?

Basically, I'm asking if I don't click any ads anyway, am I effecting a site in any way by using an Adblocker?

You should not have to pay to watch the GSL, Proleague, or OSL at a reasonable time. That is not "fine" and it's BS to say otherwise. My sig since 2011. http://www.youtube.com/user/dabom88

I think you need to click them for people to get money.

There are two concepts: impression vs click, and some companies offer a conversion factor such that you can earn a revenue through both means.

I'm fairly certain that if you use adblock, the ad won't get downloaded, so it wouldn't count towards an impression.

Yeah I believe that if you use an adblocker, even if you don't click, the site won't get money from impressions (views) because otherwise there would be no reason for sites like TL.net/reddit/etc to have banners which try to get people to turn off adblock.

There are providers offering pay per view ads, where the site hoster gets (a lot less, but still) some money for users simply being shown the ads, without them clicking on it. AdBlock should disable the ads download, so that means no money for the site, yes.

If you use adblocker, you're basically freeloading off the site. Although you don't have to feel guilty, many users do the same.

This is exactly the reason adblockers include the option to turn ads off imo. You should be willing to allow the websites that you respect and who don't abuse your eyes to show you RELEVANT and non-obtrusive ads.

Reddit and TL.net are some of the few sites that I allow through my adblock.

I don't feel guilty. Just wanted clarification.

No ads are relevant to me because I don't want anything they're offering, or I don't want it at the prices they're offering. And all ads annoy me so they are obtrusive.

But look deep into the TL horse's eyes. Surely you can't be so soulless as to not feel pity for that horse. Look how sad he is. Don't you want to turn off Adblock? C'mon, we know you do! :p

Generated ads, and promoting products being sold through various retailers is my main source of income these days. I get paid when people click on the ads, or when someone buys a product that I've recommended. Using an ad blocker wouldn't really effect me personally, because I depend on targeted traffic that is looking for something specific, not necessarily social traffic just looking to read the site and not act on anything.

IE: When someone types "pink digital camera" into Google, and my pages that appear at the top of the search results have ads or products related to pink digital cameras, they are targeted to the user and lead to a higher click through rate.

If you're just browsing around because I created some controversy about pink digital cameras, or saw the page on a site like Reddit or StumbleUpon, I wouldn't really want you clicking the ads because you weren't planning on buying something. It's not really a loss for me personally. It's pretty hard to turn this type of traffic into buyers.

If you're just surfing the net, there may be ads related to something you just searched for, but the click through rate on those types of visitors is pretty abysmal at best. The difference between "social" visitors and visitors that come from the search engines is huge.

The pay per impression type programs require a TON of traffic to make minutiae amounts of money, so your 1-2 impressions probably aren't going to make a difference in their paycheck. These are most typically news sites that are generating thousands of impressions every minute, like New York times.

Hope that makes sense.

Thankfully, with Adblock, I can block the horse as well. Just one less annoying banner to worry about. But this topic isn't solely about TL anyway.

How do you block the Horse with AdBlock? Mine didn't. I thought the horse was designed to show specifically if you were running AdBlock haha?

Right click the banner, click Adblock Plus: Block Image.

Or Download Adblock Element Hiding Helper:
http://adblockplus.org/en/elemhidehelper

After installing it, select it on your Adblock and then click the frame the Horse banner is in. You can block it that way.

Can I do this even if I disable it on TL.net? That horse keeps telling me to do something I've already done, damn it.

I like the horse, he makes me feel bad but I don't want to lose him by doing what he says.
Anyway ya, I was wondering about this too. Good to know how it works.

The ads on tl is so unnoticeable(?) for me. I only see it when I actually focus on it or when someone (like this thread) is talking about it.

But when I look at it now it's just some dating program lol. Although I can understand why'd they put a dating program like that on a community like TL

For those blocking the horse, make sure you don't accidentally disable all of Hot_bid's images.
