Merry Christmas!

I need some serious help -.-. I was driving in a korean District looking for some "Shin Rayum" when i came across a Korean BBQ restaurant. Ive been hearing that the foreigners been loving the korean BBQ so i decided to take a peek at the menu. When i entered the restaurant ,to no surprise, the place was full of koreans. When i skimmed through their menu it was half korean and half unpronounceable english -.-. I really want to try korean BBQ but I have no idea what to get or what is what. I was thinking maybe someone with a bit more experience could lend me some helpful advice on the ways of the korean BBQ

the things to try in USA korean bbq place:

Beef brisket
Galbi (beef short rib)
Samgyupsal (pork belly)

you can try the squid and all that but IMO its not worth the time.

you should try this thing called "galbi" which are ribs and are so good, the only problem is that at most places it is kind of expensive and they don't give you that much but I know that my friends who aren't korean liked them a lot

Yeah, everyone promotes samgyupsal (basically bacon) but for a first timer there are better things to get like those mentioned above.

bibim bap isn't Korean bbq...

Anyway, I'd suggest getting some friends and going to a place that has a buffet. You'll have a lot of fun kicking it while you're cooking the meat and it'll never stop coming. If you're not a pussy you'll be able to get through at least three full plates of meat between 3-4 people. My friends and I have gone through seven before between four of us.

Be careful with pork, though. Samgyubsal isn't too bad since it's cut thin and flat, but it's really difficult to tell when thicker or messier cuts of pork are fully cooked (daejibulgogi (usually marinated in some kind of spicy sauce) and pork chop-like things are very hard to tell). I've gotten food poisoning from not cooking it properly like a retard.

In most asian places i've found along my travels mentioning that you want what another table is having is also fine as well. Don't be intimidated by being the only 'foreigner' anywhere, its a great experience and you just get used to it in time.

yummm kbbq
I recommend everything on the menu. Just go for it. It'll be good. Ask the waitress/waiter/server for help regarding how to cook it properly, and in some cases, they come and do it for you.

Usually you start with Cha-Dol-Bae-Gi, which is thinly sliced brisket that cooks extremely quickly. Depending on the place, it may or may not be served with a sauce.

Then you can continue eating Cha-Dol-Bae-Gi as you move on to other meats, usually Sam-Gyup-Sal, which is kind of like a thick bacon? Samgyupsal can be eaten alone with rice (It's usually dipped in a sauce), or more traditionally, it can be eaten with an assortment of side dishes. Eating samgyupsal is kind of like an art and is worth a quick google to get an idea of how to eat it in order to enjoy it the most ^^

Another popular kind of meat is Bul-go-gi, which is marinated beef. There is also Gal-bi, which is a marinated short rib and is usually more expensive than the other kinds of meat.

All this food is usually served with various Ban-chan or side dishes of all different kinds. Make sure you at least try all of them!

With Korean BBQ you pretty much can't get wrong, just go ahead and order any kind of meat (Probably one of the four I mentioned) and just go for it

Come to DC and I'll show you what to get!

Every TL nerd wants a little asian in them. Bulgogi and Spicy Pork is what makes me feel less Caucasian and more Asian!

Kalbi (marinated ribs) are very tasty, but unfortunately they are expensive.
If you can find a cheap all you can eat BBQ, invite all your friends and eat. :D
Me and my friends did that and it was so great.

spicy pork to fill you up cheap. bulgogi(marinated beef) or sam gyup sal(no marinade pork belly) if you want the grilling experience. and galbi(marinated beef short ribs) if you feel like a baller.
you should go wit some korean friend to learn how you are supposed to eat them. (wrap it with lettuce and other crap in it)

I'm really really conservative in my tastes, shying away from anything even remotely exotic, but I really really enjoy bulgogi. Marinated beef, almost like steak. I haven't been to a ton of KBBQ places but all the ones I have been to in Manhattan, NY's K-town have had delicious bulgogi. I highly recommend trying it.

omfg 서래...galmaegisal in Korea is by far my favorite food in the world.

sadly its no where to be found in USA.

One time I asked a korean ahjuma at a korean BBQ if they have galmaegisal and she said
"ohh you really miss korean meat, but sadly its not here in usa"

I would recommend bulgogi but it's rly not that expensive and not worth the "all u can eat"

its like going to a chinese buffet and filling up on fried rice.. why bother?

beef brisket and galbi and other expensive stuff is what u want since it's more delicious and cost more!
