I used to chew the caps on bottles off, you know, like on sports drinks that you slide up to drink. The plastic is not too hard to damage your mouth and not too soft to have no effect. Not exactly a long term solution though...

My doctor actually told me to get a mouthpiece because I grind my teeth. I fucking hated wearing that thing when I slept. Plus your jaw is still stiff after you wake up since instead of grinding on your teeth, you're biting on the mouthpiece.

But I found a pretty easy fix for not grinding your teeth while asleep w/out using mouthpiece. Call it a quick fix (well it worked for me). Just leave your jaw slack before you go to sleep. No need to open your mouth or anything, just don't have it closed or tensed in any manner before you sleep. This fixes the problem for me. (Basically found this out because I got drunk one night -> forgot to put my mouthpiece on -> woke up and my jaw didn't hurt. go figure)

I've done this for a year now, and I'm pretty confident it works because my jaw isn't stiff after I wake up (like before) and my dentist told me that I've been doing well using my mouthguard. :/

Edit: Just realized OP doesn't have grinding teeth problem, just likes to bite things like a dog. Chew on some gum, but be careful because your jaw muscles can actually get a little developed. Friend of mine chews gum hardcore and after 5 years you can actually see some muscle development when he bites down. Dunno if this is bad or anything, but he apparently thinks it's pretty bitchin.

I have that same issue and gum and mouthpieces just dont do it for me. There is a company called the sensory university, they make adult chew toys, some are even flavored. It may sound odd to some but there really is nothing that compares to an actual chew toy and i'm tired of denying it. For your problem with taking them into your meeting or class they make some that go on the end of your pen or pencil. Ark Therapeutic are also supposed to make some good ones.
