My girlfriend and I are planning to travel to Europe in winter mainly for her sake because she hasn't been there before. We know it's not exactly the best time to be going there but it's the only time we can go. I definitely want to go to Amsterdam for the cafe culture and we're also thinking of Barcelona in Spain. Is Barcelona OK in winter or would you recommend somewhere else? Also how long would you recommend staying in each place?

Amsterdam is a nice city, but it's also overrated. If it's your dream to go there, definitely do so, but if your plan is to see Europe in general, there are much more spectacular cities to visit (London, and especially Paris!). If you visit Paris, plan a few days at least.

Barcelona is a good choice. I've had some bad experiences with spanish hotels, but that's probably only my bad luck. The city does lose some of its flair in winter, though.

I wanted to recommend visiting Germany as well, but I can't to so with a straight face after downrating Amsterdam. You'll need a 1-2 week long vacation to truely appreciate Germany as a holiday location, since you'll have to travel a bit to enjoy various aspects of culture and nature. But if you manage to squeeze in a trip to Berlin, go ahead.

Where are you planning on going? Western Europe? Eastern Europe? How long? How are you going to travel from city to city? Do you have any friends there to show you around?
On a purely personal note, I'd like to show Yellow the beauty of infinitely repeating Starcraft 2 bunkers. -Boxer

How many countries do you really want to visit? Like only 3 or 5 or what?

Go to Paris, only place I'd wish to visit before I die, it's a very unique city.

Barcelona is fine in the winter. It seems like you insist on visiting Amsterdam. I would start there, then head south to France, Itali and Spain to top it all of.

If you want I would love to hang out with you when you're in Amsterdam. Seems like fun.

pro tip:
research average precipitation for the destinations you want to travel to. Not so much for the actual precipitation but to see how often it is clouded. Many tourist stuff looks and feels way better in more direct light (happened to me in amsterdam).

Other than that, if you are not found of cold climate, greece has tons of history stuff (duh!) and italy can be nice as a tourist. Never been to spain/portugal so i can't comment.
If you don't mind the cold, GO SEE PARIS! Skip london and see berlin/amsterdam/vienna instead. I didn't find london interesting at all, but maybe that's different for you 2 because you might know more about it's history than i do.

In any case, ask someone local to give you tips. This is actually really important as it can save you money and enrich your experience by a lot!

definitely check out paris and london! agree tho that wintertime is prolly not the best time to come around but then again if theres no other way around it go ahead.just thought it worth mentioning that were having a hell of a winter incoming this year (just like last year). thats how things are in germany at least. i would recommend berlin btw if u want some crazy nightlife experience. i live in berlin and it definitely has some of the best clubs in all of europe.

*edit* oh yeah brings tons of money!!1 most western european countries are expensive! except for good ol germany and especially berlin which is definitely the cheapest capital city in western europe.

Barcelona is definitely fine during winter, definitely go to Amsterdam..seems like you're into that thing(Go into a smart shop and get truffles and prepare to be the most fucked you've ever been in your whole life-If you get the strongest ones).
Definitely go to Germany, maybe a small bias here as I lived there for about a year and a half but it really is an awesome place, you could go from Amsterdam-Hamburg-Berlin. What Krok(obs) says is true, you can find clubs in Berlin that are "day clubs" as in you go out at 2am and stay in a club till 2pm..crazy experience.
Don't pay any attention to the person that says not to go to London..wtf. It's a little bit miserable in terms of the weather, but you should DEFINITELY go to London, it's top 5 for me in Europe.
I'm a little hesitant to recommend places like Italy because they're probably better with Sun..but considering you're going with your girlfriend..take her to Venice and you'll get some good sex?
Also you've gotta go to Paris as well, that's a no brainer as you're going with your girlfriend.

Honestly it's kinda hard for me to give you more advice as I don't really know what you're into..
The places I can recommend purely because you're going with your girlfriend are: Barcelona, London, Paris and Venice..but other than that it's really up to you.

Just remember it's gonna be fucking cold in certain places, -10 in Germany etc..but you're going in Winter so I hope you expect that? Don't let it deter you either, just make sure you have a big jacket, beanie, gloves, scarf etc and you'll be fine.

Have fun!

My personal favorite European cities are Paris and Venice, but I'm not sure how Venice is in the winter. I like the romantic cities, so I wouldn't recommend London unless you have spare time, and like bad weather. It's about personal preference, though. Barcelona/Madrid are refreshing places as well if you want to experience Spanish culture. Amsterdam is nice but nothing really stood out to me other than the "unique" coffee shops, and you probably don't want to go to the Red Light District since you're with your girlfriend.

The more time you stay, the better. You could easily stay a week in each city, but it would get expensive and i don't know how much time you have. Conservatively, maybe stay 3 days in each city.

If you want to see the real Europe, shouldn't you avoid all the big cities?
afaik they are all more or less the same
but what do I know, I hate citylife anyway

Thanks for the comments. Ive made an itinerary now. I took a lot of people's advice and included Paris. I didn't want to go there at first because I've actually been there before but my girlfriend hasn't plus last time I never made it up the Eiffel tower (they were on strike) or the catacombs which sound pretty cool.

We only have about 2 and 1/2 weeks in total because of work. Despite some people saying don't bother with London we kind of have to include the UK because my mum and some other relatives are there so that's going to be the first week of our trip (London and Cambridge) and I'm thinking of going up to York because I've heard some good things about it.

For the rest of it we booked some really cheap flights through Ryan Air and Easyjet. So basically we're going to do this: Fly from London to Barcelona and stay there for 3 nights -> by air to Paris for 2 nights -> by Thalys train to Bruges for 2 nights -> by local train to Amsterdam for 3 nights -> by air on Easyjet back to London.

Some people mentioned Brussels but from what I've read on other places Bruges sounded a bit nicer.

I know there's lots of other cool places and Germany, Greece and Cyprus sound fun as well but I don't think we have the time to do them justice on this trip.

By winter I did mean the northern hemisphere winter (February). Not ideal I know but at least Barcelona shouldn't be too cold (fingers crossed) and on the plus side I guess accommodation prices will be less and the tourist places less crowded.

Hwangjae terran- I know what you mean I quite like being out in the countryside too but since we're going to be there in winter probably we'll be better off sticking to the cities. My mum's house is in a pretty small village near cambridge at least.
