It seems to be dying; in real life or online it doesn't seem to matter. People are just super inconsiderate or they expect you to cater to their every whims without them telling you what they are. I'm getting rather annoyed by it and you guys know by now when I get annoyed I blog about it.

On a daily basis I get random PMs, messages on BNet and random Real ID requests because I'm a moron and have shown my email repeatedly.

Now heres the thing, if you're going to add me on real ID put something in the box about who you are. Because just seeing a random name saying they want to be your real ID friend is not a very helpful piece of information. At the very least when I RealID someone without them knowing it's coming in the next five seconds I'll type "Raelcun." Just fucking tell me who you are so I don't have to add you and then look at your profile to figure out if I know you or not.

Next are the random messages on BNet where people want to ask me for a favor but they don't say what it is. My favorite is how they are usually worded "Hey I need to talk to you." No reference on who they are or what they want just "I need to talk to you." Wow that's helpful sure whatever I'm not trying to be a dick by just ignoring people but when you get a lot of messages you kind of just ignore the ones that aren't immediately obvious what they want.

Used to be people would hold open a door for you now people seem surprised if you do it for them. I know that common courtesy has been dying in real life and it never really existed on the internet. But when you want to ask someone for a favor it usually helps to tell them who you are and what you want.

Sounds like youtube. I usually see it as an opportunity to troll someone. And so I do.

Courtesy is a dying breed. After being subjected to the internet, which quite literally makes people stupid, you turn from rage into cynical and eventually into a dick. I'm personally well past the dick part - every morning I wake up with excitement only to see who has made a stupid or obscure comment for me to turn inside out on my videos. The internet never fails to deliver.

You actually respond to all those real id requests and whispers on BNET? I applaud your patience with constant annoyances, but I guess that comes with your e-fame. I had a random guy real id friend me which is concerning (how did he get my email), so I'm gonna ask who the hell he is.

If it makes any difference, I hold the door for people, and was gonna give a homeless guy an apple, but a cop was giving him a ticket, haha.

Friend of a friend option is the answer there. I know I get about 5-10 friend requests a day. People who think I will train with them, I never even get to play!!!! :D

Some woman let the door to my apartment building close in my face today, right as she smiled at me. It bothered me because she didn't even realize what she'd done. Oh well I guess. I don't think common courtesy is nearly as bad in real life as it is online. Especially in busier or more popular areas.

But then again I'm not even E-famous, and I'm sure I would get sick of all the things you're describing.

I'm with you there, I fucking love your stream and what you guys do but I'm not special enough to ever expect to get your attention. Annoys the shit out of me to be watching you and see people jump into games as obs without any invitation messaging constantly about help with strategy w/o any consideration to what you're doing and I really do not want to be that guy. But I'm the more considerate out of my social circle. I hold doors open for people (hate when there's a long line of them and none of them ever consider to hold it so you can go) but, I guess spam is the payment for being e-famous lol.

Even If I know the Username.code or Email of a famous pro/caster (much like yourself), I won't try to talk to them, let alone send a friend request. Because I'm pretty sure they get enough spam without me helping.

I'm not sure whether its because you are getting more cynical over time (as everyone, including myself does), or your just exposing yourself to a different/changing atmosphere that includes more assholes, but I kind of don't feel as though common courtesy is dying, per se. However, the influx of sc2 players definitely have a tendency to be more immature and less courteous then scbw TL members. They also are tend to be worse posters, more rude, etc etc. It's just a changing of the sc atmosphere/audience.

I asked David Kim as nicely as possible if I could obs his next match, as the real ID friend I usually join off of (who has access to his matches) just logged off. I was ignored.

Well...he's right?

Its not a bad thing that SC2 is getting a ton of attention, but with more people coming into the community the greater chance there is that the quality of their posts and attitude isn't up to par to what was a really niche community.

I think its just that people who are new to the SC community have to get used to the fact that SC gamers care a lot more about courtesy and such.

EDIT: And just because you add someone on bnet doesn't make you guys instant buddies. It not a matter of elitism or "I'm too good to play or talk to you," but you have to understand people still have their own lives and play among themselves.

To clarify I'm not angry that I get these messages it's just the way that they are worded. A lot of the random messages that I get I like reading but the other ones just make me roll my eyes. I'm not saying dont bother people who are known in the community ever just be polite about it. Tell them who you are, telling htem what it is you want is helpful too. Just going HEY YOU isn't super helpful.

Yep, people acting like you owe them something when you go out of your way to help out is a huge demotivator. Rudeness or being impolite is more of a minor annoyance though and I usually overlook it when judging character.

As someone who consistently watches the iCCup stream (awesome btw), as well as other streams, I actually get rather annoyed when people are messaging streamers and adding them as real id friends. I really do not see the need to send someone who's streaming in game messages, that's why streams come with chat. The same thing goes for friending as well.

Circling back to the topic however, I've given up on courtesy via the internet. That's not to say I'm discourteous myself, but it's much less of a let down when you expect much less from people and you get more. I can understand raging here and there when you lose a game, I do that myself, but some of the stories I hear from lurking the forums or messages you get when you win against someone are really over the top.

As far as RL goes, I think I fall in the realm of the few in the belief that chivalry, and by extension courtesy, is not completely dead. It is certainly well on its way out, but I like to think of courtesy like those insurance commercials where somebody picks up a baby's bottle for a mom, and the mom pulls a guy out of the street who almost gets hit, then the cycle continues (probably nowhere close to the actual commercial but hopefully you know what I'm talking about). I think much of the reason courtesy is dying is due to the parents of the younger generation.

Now, I'm only 21, but imo the kids who I see coming up through high school now are all pricks, all of them. I think a lot of has to do with the whole 'everyone get a trophy' ideology. I feel like when I was going through sports when I was younger, we were never all given trophies. I mean sure maybe in tee ball when there weren't any winners or losers, but by the time I was in 7th grade it was pretty obvious if you didn't win you weren't going to get anything special other then our coaches telling us to get better and try again the next year. Now parents think their kid is the best at everything, and if they aren't they should be recognized for something. I could go on for awhile about this, but I feel like any more and I'd be hijacking your blog

Real quick last point I just thought of going back to SC2. Those kids who all grew up getting trophies, probably the same kids who are just getting into SC2, and the same kids messaging you.
Without a community, we're all just a bunch of geeks.

@ grobyc: Not sure what you mean by my post being elitist... He was trying to be subtle but instead was blatantly dissing the new gen of sc players by saying on average they are trash. While it may be true the way he went about saying gives off an air of entitlement and douchebaggery. He went in assuming the SCBW player's posts are golden heaps of shit in contrast to our normal corny ones. I merely remarked that his SCBW post was about as trashy as any of the people he set out to insult. I'm not dissing SCBW, I don't care, you value mechanics and tradition over a cleaner UI and graphics. Your choice I'm not saying mine is better just different. And did you get all your posts by double-posting? (goodnatured poke)

I thought you were gonna talk about asshats who just stand around while the rest of us are trying to set up the band room, for band. That also makes sense too. It really just ticks me off. People just expect that they can just sit around and do what they want, while someone else does what the other is supposed to be doing. Something else I hate is that, people keep trying to borrow my school supplies, like for a pen. EVERY DAY. It's like come on, you should have your own stuff. Or trying to copy my answers on my worksheet, or homework, it bugs me because it's mine not theirs. I don't have any problem sharing, but every single time gets annoying.

I understand how you feel, people want to talk to me, but never tell me what they want.
I have an announcement to make, "Moo!" That is all.

I know what you mean

A couple of weeks back I was doing RT 4v4 and after one of the games finished I got a random invite. Not knowing who it was from or what it was for I just cancelled it straight away.

Seconds later I get "wtf how rude" etc from this random guy who I had never even talked to because I did not accept his invite. After talking to him it turns out he was from the previous game and noticed I was decent and wanted to do 2v2.

If he had've actually introduced himself and said something like "hey man we just did 4v4 together would you like to try some 2v2" I probably wouldve obliged. I tried to explain to him that I don't even accept invites from people I know unless they talk to me first so why would I accept an invite from someone I don't even know? He didn't understand so I ended up just saying goodbye and that was that.

I much prefered the "u d/d+ fs kk? wisper plzzzzzz" on iCCup to being treated like a computer. The more I think about it a lot of the blame can be put on Battle.net 2.0 for being such an awful system. Battle.net 2.0 is pretty much as anti social as it gets. It dehumanises actual people into just being a "join game" button. People are being trained to click buttons and go, there is barely any meaningful interaction. Don't like someone? Leave and click the button again and you get someone else.

It's funny because a lot of the reasoning for the designs of battle.net 2.0 were to reduce "abuse" or "harrassment" or even "spam". I actually think it's far worse right now than it has ever been. It should be a system to build up a community of players and have people working as a group to get better at the game, instead everyone just gets turned into some letters and numbers that you have to beat to gain rank in a ladder than barely makes sense.

People often forget that there are real people behind the comments, words, and posts.
When i ask for some work or something from someone in my college i will always ask politely because I know that the next day or week I will run into him or her.
That doesnt work for people who you dont see irl.
If you know someone famous you will also get harassed for it and it certainly sucks, just try to stay calm and play it cool.

@OP: I don't know which one is stupider, people doing these things or you showing off your e-mail (no offense indeed). But you're damn right about 2 things: "Hey raelcun sup, i want to be your real id friend" is much worse than "Hey raelcun sup, I'm Metalwing from TL.net, I live in Turkey and I want to be your real id friend, ... (more info here)" and "Hey raelcun sup can you do me a favor" is just worse than "Hey raelcun sup can you do me a favor and play a practice games or 2 with me cos I want to practice my vZ/cast my blah blah tournament where these players are invited/help spreading my event of blah blah where I help the blah blah by getting donations from my blah blah paypal account and later donate to blah blah charity organization".

But when someone comes to you and say "Hey raelcun sup, how r u doin lately, how is your school goin, when do you think you stream pokemon again" or any sort of casual talk like that and you respond with "stfugtfo", this means that you're a dick (I don't know if you do this kind of dickness or not). You may want not to talk at that particular moment and it's pretty understandable but well, stfugtfo is not the best way to express that and you probably know it better than I do.

Yeah, road rage is just hilarious. I just love to scream "Why don't u move you son of a bitch!! Need some help on pressing gas pedal?" or "Hey, this road is not your father's property so use it the way it is you son of a bitch". My screams mostly have "son of a bitch", "faggot", "bastard" or words like that and it becomes worse if the driver is woman because I call her "bitch" all the way down the road.

I was in a TvT on Xel'Naga Caverns. The guy expanded to his 3rd (instead of his natural). I harassed him all game, and defended a push of his. A couple minutes later he comes in to my 3rd with a Thor, a couple BCs, and some other stuff. I stim and focus down his BCs then his Thor.

He says "nigger" and leaves. Guess there was technically a "gg" in there...but still....

Anyway, I've basically given up on expecting common courtesy from people on the internet. Real life in Philly/South Jersey there's plenty of great people though. It's actually rather uncommon that somebody won't hold a door open or keep the elevator waiting and stuff. Maybe you should consider moving somewhere far away when you can (whenever you're out of college or whatever).

Tip: Decline every request unless you know who it is. If it's someone that you want to talk to, they'll find some other way to contact you, and then you can add them. Should save you a ton of time and frustration.
