I think this blog is best introduced with a slide show:

http://img259.imageshack.us/slideshow/webplayer.php?id=img0812d.jpg

Those 6 pictures pretty much speak for themselves...

I don't know when it happened exactly but someone must have hit my parked car and driven off. Basically this morning I go out to my car (2008 mazdaspeed 3) and hop in (didn't look carefully so I don't know if the damage was there yet), drive to a couple of stores, park in their lots, and get food. After eating, I notice when walking to my car that it is damaged (as you saw). There was no evidence that it happened in that particular lot. It could have happened in either of the two parking lots, or where I parked it on the street overnight (I park very close to the curb but it's still obviously a risk).

I've called my insurance company (travelers) and put in a claim, and will hear back on Monday about the 'investigation.' I tried calling Mazda but their service department was already closed.

My car is under warranty so I have to be careful about having work done by third parties. Monday I'm going to bring it in to an appraiser not too far from where I work who will assess the damage.

Has anyone been through this before? Do you have any suggestions about what I should tell to the appraiser? From what I can tell the entire front bumper (basically the whole front of the car save the lights which all seem to work) needs to be replaced. I can't tell whether the side of the car took any damage or not (you can see it doesn't line up evenly with the edge of the bumper anymore though).

If the part just needs to be replaced, will the appraiser be able to get the part from Mazda directly and put it on? Or do I need to go to my Mazda dealer?

I have been investigating my insurance policy and it's a bit confusing but I believe I have a 500 dollar deductible for both collision and non-collision damage. So, does this mean if the Insurance company deems I was not liable for 600 dollars worth of the damage, that I'll get reimbursed 100 dollars? I've never claimed for money from my auto insurance company before... the only other time I was involved in any type of accident I claimed for 0 reimbursement and was assigned 0% liability so it didn't really matter (asshole pulled out right in front of me years ago).

I am also looking into when I would get the work done. I obviously work business days and I only have one car. Monday I'm going after work for the appraisal but the only day I have off for the next several weeks is black Friday. Gonna investigate this...

Any other advice as I go through this process?

One final thing I looked into:

http://www.mazdausa.com/MusaWeb/speedDisplayAccessoryDetail.action?endModelYear=2008&speedAccessoryId=60&carLineCode=MZ3&categoryId=1&startModelYear=2004

Apparently that particular mazda3 5 door bumper is 830 dollars. Whether that's the exact one I need or not I'm not sure. Any estimates about how expensive this repair will be? Also let me know if there's any other information you need to help me figure out wtf is going to happen. TYVM.

You have a red car! Why did you get a red car?! Statistically, red cars are more likely to be in accidents!

Anyways, I wish I could offer real advice, but I can't... sorry. But I do think the insurance company/appraiser is not as evil as you think. Just tell them whatever you know.

That sucks man My friend got hit by some random thing on the freeway though. The deductible is something you have to straight out pay for the insurance to take care of the rest if i can remember correctly when my friend was taking care of his car. You can probably find a bumper that's cheaper than the deductible though if you browse through some mazda forums.

Car repairs suck, the last time I went to a garage (made a blog a few days ago) the guys told me "wheels fall off all the time". Go to a reputable garage to get the work done, if you can get it done outside the dealership. If the cars still under warranty, will they take care of it?

I doubt it is 'covered' by the warranty since it wasn't my car's fault in any way. Yeah maybe the guy appraising it will be able to just order the part and do it for me for cheaper... I THINK that Mazda will be ok with that since it's a 'green level warranty' part.

Ah, I'm not sure.. I've never owned anything close to being new heh.. Hopefully it does, I mean.. I know when I got my first car, it was in good shape, but a 94'. It had no rust, marks or scrapes/dents of any kind. Someone backed into my rear fender and drove off while I was at work. It was all I could look at until I got rid of the car, it wasn't worth the money to fix at the end of it. I hope it all works out for you, and hopefully it doesn't cost you much if anything at all. I hate suprise car expenses.. just shelled out $250 for an oil pan and gasket for one and some minor work on another.

Just a quick update in case anyone cares and reads this: I brought it into the concierge center which provided an estimate of ~950 dollars. They offered to fix it and lend me a car right from that office so I accepted. While they were working on the car (which took 9 nights ._.) they discovered more damage behind the bumper they were replacing and it cost a few hundred dollars more.

I paid my 500 dollar deductible plus the cost of the rental less 30/day insurance coverage.

Sucks terribly that I have to do this because someone hit my car and drove off but at least it's all dealt with. I just have to mail in one more form and I'm done.

the damage based on the pictures does not look like its worth $1000.

Ive had a similar dent in my car in a similar position (some idiot hit my parked car and i parked it properly!)
it costed me $100 for a 3rd party auto shop to pop the dent out. and since the car was silver, you could hardly see the paint scratched off.
a pretty deep dent was on the bumper right under the left headlights.
headlights werent damaged at all.

got the job done in less than 30mins.

i hope you were able to see the inside of the bumper for yourself.

the autoshop i go to always show me the extent of the damage and explains in detail whats going on. sometimes they even bust out a new part to show me for a better comparison/explanation.
they didnt even accept tips when i tried to tip them when the job was done.

lots of crooked autoshops out there, hope you had a good one :x

I discussed that with them. Not only would they not be able to pop it back out without leaving any marks on the bumper, but there was a bit of damage on a piece that connects the headlight casing to another part of the car. Not to mention the damage to some horizontal metal bar behind the bumper that they discovered later (my car must have gotten hit pretty hard lol).

This place is the one my insurance company has dealt with for years... it's the only one within 50 miles of me that is recommended so I believe they do a pretty good job overall.

Yeah I took a look at the old bumper although wasn't sure what to look for really. They had cut a piece of it off already while they were fixing the car to see beneath it. Pretty sure my shop wasn't crooked although that of course doesn't guarantee they took the best course of action.

I don't see any point in doing this. I don't even know where my car was parked when it happened. Police will probably say "we'll file a report if you have more information."

It depends on how anal you are about your car. Personally? I would have them pop it out and touch it up. For the work you're suggesting (replacing the bumper) it's definitely worth that much money... and if anything that's probably a fairly good deal. However, a simple repair could cost you a lot of money if you're willing to live with a small bump or two on your car and an uneven paint job.

Fair enough. I'm not willing to 'live' with that though.

Now for people with older cars... (a 2008 probably won't have any available), you can buy a secondhand bumpers and just have it painted and installed for a lot of savings too. I've done that with my bumper and it works great.

I dunno, I popped my bumper back out and you can barely tell it was there except for 1-2 small scratches.

Though mine was a bit smaller than your bump.

There turned out to be damage behind the bumper, and a bit on the headlight cover, so I'm glad I had them replace the old bumper.

The hit to my car was apparently a bit more severe than it seemed from the damage.

Basically, all you have to do, is pay the deductible.

It's the insurance companies job to fix EVERYTHING that was damaged, since it was a hit and run and you are not at fault or anything. Nothing else.

You don't need to think of ideas to help save money for the bodyshop, you just make sure everything is done with OEM parts and paintwork is good etc.

Good advice. This is pretty much exactly how things worked out. The only concern is the more money the insurance company pays out the more impatient they are going to be about not raising my rates if future events occur (even those that are not my fault again) :<

Do they actually keep tabs on you that closely as to what you really costed them? They probably just have a system where they mark off you had a claim, paid your deductible and were on your way. Your rates will always increase if you make a claim, no matter what the cost was.

I don't know exactly to what extent they keep track of the specifics. However they don't automatically increase your rates if you make a claim. They will increase your rates whenever you are considered an increased risk... and one accident where you car was parked and you weren't at fault isn't necessarily enough to consider you a bigger liability... depends on the policy of each individual insurance company though.

Yeah didn't mean to make it sound like one claim will increase your rates. For my insurance they factor in traffic offenses into how much plates and insurance costs(They also give a discount on having a clean driving record every year).

I know if my car got into an accident I would want it fixed, can't stand knowing something is broken on it(stone chips and paint scratches I will wait on until I need to repaint the car due to an accident).
