Hey, lately I've been playing more and more games on my PC and I was thinking about buying a controller for emulators and such and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on a decent pad. I have a PS3 and I can not get my DS3 to work with windows 7 and it's giving me a bigger headache than I think it's worth.

Here are the pads I know about and am considering

Sega USB Controller, I've read a bit about these and it seems that quality is kinda low even though they are from Sega. Pro is it's cheap and I can use it as a secondary controller on my PS3 Con would be the quality and how dependable it is.

Madcatz 360 fightpads. These are based on the original Sega controllers which are regarded as the best around. I'd have to buy a 360 version cause AFAIK the PS3 one is wireless only. Pro is decent quality, decent looks depending on which one I get haha. Cons would be pretty pricey and only usable on PC for me.

I was wondering if any of you had suggestions on a decent pad for the PC.

Overall I would say go for a generic usb ps2 type pad. It will give you the most functionality and the widest range of games to play, allowing you to play emulated ps2 games flawlessly, as with any other game that feels good with an analog stick over a dpad, just make sure the dpad is good as well, as you'll likely be using that most of the time. This also has the added benefit of being the cheapest option.

I wouldn't buy a saturn pad, most are china knockoffs that don't have quality worth buying, although the pad design was godlike.

Fightpad should be decent but the lack of analog sticks and the price would make it less desirable to me.

So you think any random pad I can pick up from ebay will be good enough right? I'm also open to someone linking or pming me a guide that they've used and has worked for getting their DS3 to work because I really like that controller and I already have it. I'm mostly worried about using the d-pad only because I don't like analog sticks.

I'm using a DualShock 2 + ps2 to usb adapter. Works great but if you want vibration you have to download the driver.

Seconded, a great controller, miles better than the PS3 one even if you can make the PS3 one work on the PC (and I have the PS3). It's cheap, very very reliable (dropped it on hardwood floor at least 50 times from about 4 feet), and is as functional as any.

Got a Cyborg Rumble myself. Never had anything else I'm afraid, so I can't say it's better than others, but I've had it for over two years. Still working perfectly, has customizable profiles and a button that lets it control the keyboard and mouse if you want to play FPS games with it. (Though if you have access to keyboard and mouse, I don't really see the reason why you'd want an inferior joystick)

But anyway. Yes, a gamepad makes playing emulators WAY more fun. :D Mine works for nearly everything so far. NES, SNES, N64, PS1, PS2 etc
Gravity is just a theory anyway.

I don't see how anyone can recommend the xbox 360 controller the D-pad is just really unresponsive/spotty.

Unless if you're talking about the 'new' xbox360 controller. They supposedly modified the dpad a little but I'm not sure how much of an improvement it is.

My PC is plugged in the TV and I'm playing on the armchair across the room, using wired controllers would be uncomfortable and restricting.
I've been using the wireless receiver and had no problems for about 2 years. But it broke recently. I was just going to buy another one, but now I will check out the fuse fix referenced in the wiki, thank you for pointing me to it.

This. Microsoft is pushing companies to have 360 controller support for games that have the "games for windows" badge on them.

The 360 controller is great on modern games, I love it.

But it sucks for emulation, end of the line. The dpad sucks alot, I have zero trouble dash jumping off a wall in megaman x on my original xbox's controller, but it's very spotty on the 360 one, I miss almost half the time.
I hate the post below mine because it feels War3-ish.

360 controllers work natively on windows. If you want the shoulder buttons, get one of the new MS controllers with the improved D-pad. Or get the Madcatz fight pad ... they're solid.

My Logitech dual action PS2 type controller works wonders for me, and it was just under 20$. I suppose it's not optimal if you are looking for more of a 360 style controller, but it should suffice for most PS3 games still.

Okay I finished reading every post here and it seems most people are recommending the xbox 360 one. I was wary of the spotty dpad but supposedly it's been fixed. I should be looking for one of the September 2010 models right? Shade says they're bad for emulation but he only mentioned that the dpad isn't that reliable so I should be in the clear right?

I guess my current plan of action will be to look up this DS3tool thing and then if it doesn't work I'll just buy one of the 360 controllers which is kinda pricey at 30 dollars but it'll last for a while I believe. Thanks a lot everyone!

Logitech Chillstream is the controller I used to use when I played console emulation games on my PC. It's essentially an Xbox 360 controller; responds great, feels nice, and also has a built in air-conditioner for your hands. Definitely recommend it.
