Every forum I read there's a hugeeeee discussion around Lol while other (arguably better) dota games get no attention. Lol isn't that good! Why are people so obsessed with it. Oh wait... grindy awards & customization. | ||

People like it because it is easy. Easy to play easy to learn. Most people are bad. People don't like games where they are bad. LoL is easy to be good. That's about it. | ||

Rather than putting you in the game and asking you to get better, it just gives you rewards based on time spent so you 'play better'. It also puts significantly more importance on the jungle creeps and their control which can be difficult for new players to understand. I mean yeah there's not the mechanical cruft of DotA with denies, orb walking, crow usage, recipes, or other such things, but it still has a lot of stupid/awkward parts to its design. But yeah, it's not really free either given the time requirement to play on an even playing field. It's also not really more action packed unless your pug/group plays passively. There's slightly less farming, but a whole lot less dynamics around ganking, map awareness, and movement. Lol is to Dota/HoN as WC3 is to Starcraft (1&2) I think Lol's popularity is because 1. the community is less abusive 2. Games are shorter in length 3. People respond well to leveling up and unlocking things. | ||
