K1 before HDnet Fights was almost impossible to watch in North America. Now that HDnet shows K1 and K1 MAX people are starting to realize how awesome it is, and how embarrassingly low level a lot of the MMA striking actually is by comparison. The sloppy brawls that usually make peoples "best mma fight" lists are usually all trumped by any random K1 or MAX fight Jeo Rogan had Mike Schiavello on his podcast recently and Joe said it best when he said if the average UFC fan even knew K1 existed they'd like it as much if not more than UFC. As far as great fights, in MAX just youtube guys like Petrosyan, Buakaw, Masato, Souwer, especially when they fight eachother. K1 is a little more hit or miss but some great fights: Ray Sefo vs Mark Hunt, Badr Hari vs Karaev 2, Abidi vs Jerome LeBanner. My advice is to just watch the entirety of the 2010 K1 and MAX world GP final 16 that took place earlier this month, they were both fantastic.

I've been a fan of MMA for years and years (before TUF 1 I think) but I was never fooled into thinking of the level of MMA striking as high, especially compared against K-1 Max level. Anderson Silva is probably the only really high level "pure" striker in the sport (of course Overeem had some success but he is primarily MT anyways) The era of Buakaw's complete domination in K-1 Max is something I'll remember for life. The guy was so unstoppable they changed the rules against his style just so he could lose. Buakaw Highlight that I've probably seen 100 times:

Buakaw, zambidis, Masato(retired) are my favorites Like the above posters, watch the lower weight World Max fighters, they are usually all pretty exciting. Badr Hari is pretty exciting/aggressive at higher weights, so he's fun to watch too. However, I hate the Schilt dominance. Damn hugeass lumbering giant.

Guys like Ernesto "Mr. Perfect" Hoost, Peter "The Dutch Lumberjack" Aerts, Andy Hug, Mirko "Crocop" Filipovic, "Sugar" Ray Sefo, Jerome "Geronimo" LeBanner, Stefan "Blitz" Leko, Musashi & Remy "The Flying Gentleman" Bonjasky are legends in my eyes. If you want to see a lot of good fights check out the tournament held in the Osaka Dome (16 man field with the final 8 from the previous year and the 8 best fighters/qualifiers in tournaments throughout the year) and the K-1 World Grand Prix Championships held every year in the Tokyo Dome. The fighters who win their match in the Osaka tournament move on to Tokyo where there can be only one ![]() And I agree with hating Semmy Schilt. I don't like his way of fighting at all.

reminds me of the Fitch vs GSP fight a few years ago when Fitch was just taking barrage after barrage of hits ... it just looked like he was going to get KO'd in the first round, but he somehow lasted through the whole 5 rounds. And this at 170lb weight class, quite a bit harsher than the 150lb fight showed above. (But still mad props to Chahid, I couldn't believe how he got back up after he was laid out flat in the tiebreaker?! Heart, all heart, so much respect for him)

I don't really follow combat sports, but I still enjoy good fights and that was undeniably entertaining. I'd actually never heard of Buakaw before. That guy looks terrifying. How did they change the rules so he could lose?

How did they change the rules so he could lose? They disallowed the clinch after he started kneeing everyone to death. He's still a top fighter though ![]()

K1 has been pretty anti-clinch for a while now. It seems like they are trying to stop Schilt more than anything since his style runs contrary to how they want their sport to look for the most part. They should keep the thai clinch though since it is exciting and just keep punishing guys who try to clinch defensively. Why would you want to get rid of this? ![]()
