Someone stole my debit card number....

So luckily I just happened to take a peek online at my checking account...about 30 minutes after two purchases totaling around $300.000 were posted, from a walgreens about 50 miles from where I had been at the time. I call chase and let them know, and they say they already have their fraud prevention team on it. They say they have to wait until the purchases actually post on the account until they refund the money(the charges are still pending at the moment) and email me a form to get it back. I then decide to call walgreens to see if they remember the jerkoffs who used my debit card number (my card has been in my posession this entire time by the way). I give them the purchase amounts and they find out my card had been used to purchase a green dot visa card (smart criminals...using a stolen visa to buy a visa...). Not only that, but she has the exact time they purchased it, security footage, and possibly remembers the people who bought it. Now the next step is file a police report so walgreens can release the security footage, then call visa and see if they can track the stolen green dot card purchases. Know the funny part of this story? I opened the account when I was 18...as a joint account with my mother, who works as a federal attorney. GG criminals. Sorry about punctuation/crappily written sentences, Im kinda typing this in a hurry.

sounds like they are about to get wtfpwned.

I had a friend who got charged for ~1500 model helicopter stuff. The fraud protection credit card offer is pretty good most of the time

if they dont have the physical card how did they use the number? Dictated it to the cashier??

Had this happen to me twice. Both times someone had access to the debitcard machine, and rigged up some scanner that copied my card and account info. Luckily both times I was fully refunded the money that was stolen. I think it totaled $1100.

Recently, some employees at my bank made a fake ID with my information and withdrew $5000 from my account at another bank location -_-

I read an article a while ago about how debit cards are unsafe because a handheld device can make a clone of a debit card with one swipe. It's called "skimming" or something like that. According to the article, supposedly waiters, etc. sometimes do this, often without the patron even knowing. Scary thought, but it's good that you have some pretty stalwart backup.
