I turned the legal drinking age about 4 or 5 months ago, and since then I've been buying beer a lot.
I'm just gonna say it now, I love beer. I hardly ever drink any other kind of alcohol, just beer. I love the way it tastes. I like how easy it is to control the level of drunk I experience.
Anyways, some people (mostly my dad and girlfriend) tell me I drink too much. I guess the part that troubles my girlfriend so much is that I enjoy drinking beer alone. As far as she's concerned it's something that only alcoholics do. But I don't really see it that way, because I'm usually playing StarCraft and chatting to my buddies over Vent having a good time and relaxing while drinking beer. No, I don't need beer to relax, but I'm not gonna lie, it sure helps haha. On average I probably drink beer 3-5 days of the week, and usually drink around 4-6 beer (it doesn't take me very much to get comfortably drunk).
All you drinkers out there, how often do you drink? Do I drink too much?
1) Same advice as people who drink a lot of soda... should drink less for health reasons (you got a beer gut?) 2) Having a little beer because you enjoy it without putting yourself at risk (driving etc) is obviously fine, but too much alcohol is bad for your liver in the long run. I don't have numbers so I can't tell you if you are 'over the limit' or not based on what you said but it is something I would be concerned about.
btw your thread title implies a bigger drunkness issue than you realize! :p
I'm quite sure that if I didn't have a job I would be drinking every night of the week. Whenever I stay in on a weekend night to play some SC2 I usually drink about 2 bottles of wine whilst 2v2ing with a friend. Not to mention the massive quantities I drink when I go out.
Every time I have the next day off I always have to get drunk, it's sort of scary.
I drink a 6 pack a week and rarely over 2 beers in a given day. I don't really see the point of drinking multiple in a day since you can't enjoy it (flavor and all) after 2 beers. In fact, beer tastes so much better after you haven't had it for awhile.
I actually wish they would sell 4 packs instead of 6.
It's just beer. I drink like that although it probably takes me more to get drunk that it gets you, but I don't always drink to get drunk. Like you, I just love the taste and also like you, I enjoy a few good cold brews while gaming online- alone or not alone. Nothing wrong with that...
I'm more careless when I lose so in a way that's a good thing =] just enjoy the game whether you win or lose
make sure you get enough vitamin b1. If you replace many of your meals with alcoholic calories you could be nutrient deficient which could lead to shrinkage of the memory portion of your brain. Permanent memory loss can occur.
I used to drink like this, but it would be 12-20 beers 3-4 days a week. I just liked getting really drunk, I admitted that I'm an alcoholic, but it's not a problem, I can control it easily. I haven't drank in 3 weeks. I don't see the problem, aside from being way too much money haha.
The real question is.. Does it matter whether you drink a lot of beer? lol
No really though, if you are being irresponsible and not handling your shit at work or school or with family because you're drunk all the time, YES, you drink too much
If you are getting fat because you don't excersize enough and you drink too much beer, and when you WOULD excersize you're already drunk so you don't anyways, then you drink too much
If you are spending 90% of your "net" income (the leftovers after you pay your bills) on beer, you probably drink too much
etc etc you see my point
I drink every day (missing on only a few very sad days). Sometimes I'll only drink 1 or 2 beers, sometimes 10-15. I handle my shit at work and keep busy, but I DEFINITELY drink too much lol.
I see no problem with having a beer a day. I drink 5-6 beers per week at least. It just relaxes you, the taste is great and you can just enjoy it and chill. But doing the numbers you do... I don't know, it might be just that you're beginning and it's partially fun for you as well. But in time you might want to cut down on it.
I don't drink, but theres no real way of labelling "to much". If anything is interfering with other areas of your life then you're doing it too much.
Plus you can see it from your girlfriends perspective, you'd rather play games, drink beer and talk to people online than spend time with her (even if this isn't the case, this is how she rationalizes it).
Your girlfriend is probably more upset with your dick becoming limp rather than you wasting your spare time drinking.
On a more serious note - drinking alone is a great way of drinking, I've drank plenty throughout my life and I grew tired of noisy companies and stupid parties. I still go whenever I feel like it but it's definitely not as entertaining as it used to be when I was 16.
well if you get drunk every time you drink... then that may be a problem. other than that theres nothing really that bad about drinking like you except the fact that you will get pretty fat quickly. i'd cut it down a little though, maybe only drink 2-3 beers.
It's just a phase you hit when you turn legal drinking age, it lasted about 6 months for me. Eventually, the novelty wears off and you go back to drinking socially. I still drink pretty often (2-3 times a week) but never by myself anymore.
That's definitely an alchy level of drinking right there Come back and tell us how much you are drinking 3 months from now. It's going to be more than you currently are drinking unless you make some changes!
Learn to enjoy drinking without getting drunk. If you drink 3-5 days a week, make most of those days when you only have one beer. If you think that's pointless, then you don't love beer, you just love getting drunk (Or just need some better beer!).
I drink while gaming, myself, but I try to make it rare when I actually get significantly buzzed while gaming alone. In my drinking experience I've found that once I get a little drunk, I just want to drink more and more until I've drank too much - I limit myself by limiting the amount of beer I keep around. If I decide I want to get buzzed and game, I'll go out and buy, say, one of those big bottles of tasty belgian-style beer. When I'm done with that and say to myself "Whoa, I bet I'll feel even BETTER if I drink more beer!", there won't be any more around for me to make stupid decisions.
I understand being new to drinking and wanting to drink a lot, but if you really want to get wasted, don't ever do it (or allow yourself the means to do it) without hanging out with your friends. Alcohol is a depressant, so it's good to have people with you to distract you from yourself or prevent you from being stupid.
Like several others have said, you should probably just stick to one or two max on most nights. It's generally what I do, and I had a drinking problem for several years. Just drink one or two, since that's your approximate tolerance level, and enjoy the great taste of a full flavor lager. Just don't get drunk as often and noone will have any room to bitch. After all, it's not the drinking of beer that upsets them, it's the fact that you get drunk.
If there are people telling you that you drink too much, multiple people who care for you, then I'm going say that they're probably right, you do drink too much. Based on the numbers you've given, I'm going to say you definitely drink too much. 12-30 beers a week is not healthy for your body and mind. You really should find a substitute, whether that be non-alcoholic beer, or a fruit juice or something. Set limits for yourself, either by the day, or by the amount. Get your dad and gf to help you stay on that path.
A little drinking now and then is not an issue, but don't let it define you.

I too love beer. I drink probably 4-5 times a week; weeknights just one beer, more on weekends. I don't think it's a big deal unless you become dependent on it.
Definitely you should reduce your drinking, but i wouldn't be too concerned UNLESS your family/close relatives have a history of drinking problem. In that case i would definitely reduce the drinking, or you run a pretty big risk of getting hopelessly addicted. It's not worth risking it, you might have control for now but eventually the alcohol will start controlling your life and getting out of it alive will be hell.
Nah man, you don't have a problem -- I also love beer, and used to drink it almost every day, just for the taste of it and loosen up a little after work.
Though, 4-6 per day is a bit, although it depends on how quickly you're drinking them. If it's like 4-6 over the course of the whole day, I think that's totally fine.
You should probably start a poll and put it in the original post.
niteReloaded said it in an interesting way that i like to use nowadays. basically, if you do something a lot, then your basic description or appearance is defined by that thing.
so...if you write a lot, you're a writer. if you study a lot, you're a hard studier. if you drink a lot, you're a drunk or drinker.
you're defined by what you do. want to be able to tell people you're a writer? then write.
your girlfriend or family probably beginning to see you as "a drinker". thats not so attractive than if they considered you a "writer" or "rock climber".
of course, you can go ahead and keep personal shit to yourself if people dont like it.
Actually when your family and also your girlfriend says you drink too much, it's a huge sign to overthink your drinking patterns. Well, this might be the usual thing parents say when you get really wasted, but that's not the case here.
They say it because you do drink (and by drinking I do not mean 1 or even 2 beer, that's alright I guess, but 4++) almost each day (and that (semi-)alone), which is definitely alot.
Try to just stop it now. If it's no problem after all, it's fine, and probably still for the better you stopped now. If it's not that easy, it's even more important to stop.
Dude I'm the same as you but I didn't turn 21 I just have a foreign passport so the month/day is backwards and I use that to buy liquor (real birthday 11/02/89, fake birthday 02/11/89 = MONEY). Depending on my day, I drink 4-12 beers a day, minimum. I tried to take a 1 week break and I only lasted 44 hours LOL until I came home after the facebook movie where they drink in front of the computer all the time so what was I supposed to do right? I act completely normal and I don't get wasted most of the time (parties are an exception sometimes), I function normally and do things like go to work and hang out (without drinking), etc. The way I see it, it's only a problem if YOU feel it is affecting your life negatively. Be honest with yourself.
How much is one beer? A beer bottle? A can? A pint? That makes a big difference.
Regardless, I don't think that's too much. I mean it's a bit unhealthy, but so are a lot of fun things. As long as it isn't effecting your studies/work/relationships/hobbies, I don't see the problem.
i drink 4-5 times a week, but never alone, and it's never to get drunk. of course i do get drunk sometimes, but i know my limit. i know i have to open the store for everyone where i work at 5am. i know the 1-2 hours of sleep is going to destroy me the next morning
i'm never late to work and i feel like drinking his much doesn't negatively affect my life. if i felt it did, i would drink less, or only go out on my weekened. point is, i'm responsible about it and i know i can lose my job if i'm not to work on time, every time. i can control myself
if you feel you got it under control, no worries, dude
if your dad and gf are upset by it, then that's a very very good indication that _you_ have a problem. talk to them about it and explain your side of the situation. if they are still against it, and you love them, then stop right now.
Personally, I find a lot of life's vices (good food, alcohol, recreational drugs, gambling, gaming, etc) are best enjoyed in a social setting. Its not to say that it's a bad thing to do alone (I love a shot of baileys in my morning coffee, a beer at dinner, a quick game of SC or a VOD as a study break, etc), but if I'm going to do anything in an excessive manner, it's going to be with other people. Its much more enjoyable imo.
So, to me, people with drinking problems are the ones who enjoy it excessively by themselves. Otherwise, they have a problem if it starts affecting other areas of their lives, like work or school (or, in your case, your situation with your GF).
This leads me into thinking that while you may not think you have a problem, you really do. I love beer as well, but it is definitely a manageable thing to cut yourself back to 1-2 a day (with excessively more on special occasions).

No I'm 20, my birthday is 11/02/89 in American date numbers and 02/11/89 in European. Nov 2, 1989. The "fake" birthday that people read my Russian passport as being is Feb 11th, 1989.

yep, saw it in action when we went out to a bar, good times
You may be dinking too much. A lot of people dink because they like the taste, but if you're dinking 4-6 beers a day, its going to be bad for your health in the long run.
Dinking that much is bad for your liver, your wallet and your weight.
I would say try to start dinking about 1-2 beers a day instead. That combined with a decent diet and lifestyle should mean your dinking is staying within acceptable limits for you to stay healthy.
I also think if you yourself are questioning the amount you're drinking then you probably are drinking too much. Just cut down a little. It'll help your wallet and your weight.
4 - 6 Beers down on each night of the 3 - 5 nights a week is a teeny bit much in my opinion. You're very responsible with it, and I also agree with what other people say about drinking alone- it's not a bad thing. Usually people who would say drinking bad when you're doing it alone are typically only drink at parties and are a bit narrow minded when it comes to the subject of what the signs of alcoholism are.
I think a lot of older people who have more laid back yet well-sustained lifestyles can give the best opinion of how much is too much. IMO people who do their best to avoid areas of night-life, partying, and drug-use OR people who do the exact opposite and indulge themselves in those activities will not give you a very reliable answer. It's always the people who are in between the 2 and can make a decision of something along the lines of "Eh, it's been a long day, I'll just stay home have a few beers, relax, and wake up all ready for work tomorrow!" who give you the best advice.
Personally, I either have 2 glasses of wine or 2 cans of beer every night before I go to sleep. Completely harmless.
from a health standpoint...yeah you are. not saying its a bad thing, your not responsible or it isnt fun, but between 12-30 beers a week a week is a lot.
This sounds fine. It's higher than most people but that doesn't mean much. 4 nights a week 5 beers each doesn't sound too bad to me. The most important thing, as with anything, is that you're not letting it affect other things.
Also it will create a beer belly unless you do a lot of sports. Beer bellies suck hard. So definitely work out or play sports a few times per week.
I drink almost every day to be honest. I'm 26 and I've been a functional alcoholic since I was 21. Never really let it "get in the way" of anything. I've accomplished everything I've wanted to set my mind towards.
Most people just don't understand. There is a difference to enjoying drinks home alone, and making stupid decisions involving alcohol. Having beers while playing your favorite games or chatting on skype at home is completely different from downing a fifth of vodka and going for a drive.
