So today would've been John Lennon's 70th birthday, and this would be my... tribute, I suppose. ツ

Imagine
Close your eyes...
Do you hear the cries that fills the skies?
Mothers distraught, fathers overwrought,
Their child's life's been sold and bought,
Tears of children's innocence lost,
Their paths with catholic priests crossed,
Cries of the apostate,
A victim of religious hate.
Imagine with me, for one moment in time,
A place where there is no oppressive veil,
Where the religious intolerance doesn't prevail,
No honour killings, no genocide,
No longer a divide worldwide,
No more killings in God's holy name,
No apostates to hunt, kill or maim,
No one dying by religious decree,
Instead minds set free,
Imagine with me...

The crusades, the inquisition,
Protestants and Catholics in opposition,
The Irish rebellion, The Thirty years war,
Muslims and Jews on the Mediterranean shore,
Fracturing the world just like before,
Imagine with me,
No prophets pretending to know,
No death of Theo van Gogh,
No catholic guilt, no magic tale
No holy land, no god to hail,
No sinners, no saint Paul,
Just people once and for all
Imagine with John, just for one moment in time,
No religion.

It seems difficult to have a discussion on this without going down that path, to be honest.
I guess you could believe in God without being religious but the aggressive nature of the OP makes it seem inevitable that someone's going to get offended/start debating.

Religion is only (a superficial) part of it. That's like saying WWII wouldn't happen if people didn't use the swastika, or weren't taught how to be racist. The underlying reasons are always economical.

But John Lennon has other songs too. (eg: working class hero) Sleep in peace, John.

Indeed it is difficult, which is why I added that last bit in a vain attempt to stop it.

I'm not really sure how I'm being aggressive, though...

While I am an atheist I would like to point out that the 'Imagine' song is not only about the possibility of no organized religion, there is more to it than that. In fact, I think the song's most important message is about the possibility of a world beyond capitalism. I don't see why you do not include this in your post when that is more or less what the song is about.

I believe you are misrepresenting/misinterpreting John Lennon's beliefs. Lennon said himself that he did not mean no religion, rather no denominations of religion.

God is good, but some people are overzealous and that is terrible...

I don't think I've ever wished my opponent good luck prior to a game. When I play, I play to win. I hope every opponent I ever have is cursed with fucking terrible luck. I hope they're stuck playing underneath a stepladder with a black cat in attendance a

How about we just agree, that without religion, the world we have been a much happier place.

Hell is pretty scary. Now think about what your life was like in old times average life was 30s, average distance from birthplace traveled like...less that 50 miles. They didn't know any better.

We do.
Never fear the darkness, Bran. The strongest trees are rooted in the dark places of the earth. Darkness will be your cloak, your shield, your mother's milk. Darkness will make you strong.

I'm not sure I agree it is more about a world without capitalism than anything else. In my opinion that the song is more about imagining a world without divisions, "a brotherhood of man" where all differences are put aside. Religion being the factor I perceive as the most divisive.

In any case, I didn't include it because I have no strong feelings on the point of capitalism, and I can't write poetry about things I'm not at least a little passionate about.

You know, it'd be great if you provided a citation or two to backup claims like that. I did a quick Google search and I could find no credible sources for that. Even so, if he sings about imagining no religion, then who can blame me for imagining just that?

It's sad that the underlying motivation behind all of this is...

"I am right, you are wrong, convert or we kill you"

It's gotten slightly better in recent years, I would say people are very tolerable over different religions now (except a few...).

Well, capitalism is really what would be the cause of most divisions in our time. By capitalism, it's referred to the class based society where people can take control of other's labour and profit off it (this is how most of the world today functions, and on a global scale this leads to entire nations living in poverty). What you say the song is about is directly in contrast with that.

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...

In any case, I didn't include it because I have no strong feelings on the point of capitalism, and I can't write poetry about things I'm not at least a little passionate about.

That's understandable.

I don't want to head off on a tangent, but suffice it say that I don't think that capitalism can ever create as deep divides as religion can. Murderously deep divides.

and this is my contribue to your post:
credits ofc to John Lennon but I like "A Perfect Circle"s darker theme...

Imagine there's no heaven,
It's easy if you try,
No hell below us,
Above us only sky,
Imagine all the people
living for today...

Imagine there's no countries,
It isn't hard to do,
Nothing to kill or die for,
No religion too,
Imagine all the people
living life in peace...

You may say Im a dreamer,
but Im not the only one,
I hope some day you'll join us,
and the world will be as one.

Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...

You may say Im a dreamer,
but Im not the only one,
I hope some day you'll join us,
And the world will live as one.

Imagine no possessions,
I wonder if you can,
No need for greed or hunger,
A brotherhood of man,
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...

You may say Im a dreamer,
but Im not the only one,
I hope some day you'll join us,
And the world will live as one.

Thou shall not crave thy neighbor.
