So, today was a co-workers birthday. In celebration, the whole company got together (all 15 of us..plus some other guy I've never seen before) and we had a group lunch. Since I work for a Russian, we all did shots of vodka. First up: 4 shots of Ketel One. It's apparently one of the best vodkas? I don't know. Personally, I prefer Finlandia, but Ketel One is amazing as well. Next up was 4 shots of First Guild (can't spell it properly with iBus, but it's like "пEржа гIльдIя").

Shots accompanied by a chicken cheese steak of awesome.

I don't usually drink this much, but it's fun every once in a while. Even at work

I always feel awkward if I'm slightly drunk at work... I really don't like it.

I can confirm Kettle One is the best of the mainstream vodkas if you want to drink vodka waters.

I'm still at work. And I will be for another 1.5 hours, at least. Some of the girls from downstairs (it's a 2 story office, and I used to work downstairs with the girls...and this is a long aside) were not good at liquor. I think all of them have gone home already.

Yes indeed. Grilled shredded chicken breast with melted American cheese, salt, and pepper. Normally I like to get ketchup with it, but I forgot to ask for it. Oh well.

If I did 8 shots at lunch I would be quite a bit more then semi-drunk. I am assuming that lunch was about 1-1.5 hrs long. 8 drinks in an hour would defiantly push me past the point where I would drive, and thats what I consider drunk.

It's been almost an hour and it's felt like almost an hour.

Being Irish = win.

Anyway, I'm only staying because I don't think I'm able to drive. My boss gave everyone the day off after lunch.

Here's a trick

Take bad vodka (heritage or some other plastic bottle kind) and run it through a brita water filter.

Take the result and run that through a brita water filter.

Take the result and run that through a brita.

Then do it two more times.

Now you have decent vodka!

I'm not sure if you're serious... does this actually work? I suspect there is some truth to it And 8 at work.. that's crazy! I only weigh 135 so it gets to me pretty fast. After about 6 I'm usually gone. Haven't tried drinking at work... may never lol I like to work hard and party hard, but separately.

It makes it smoother but if the vodka had a sour aftertaste, which most cheap ones do, that will remain. It's cheaper and more effective just to buy better vodka.

I've read numerous articles on this, and while it DOES work, apparently it's much more expensive to do this because it's more taxing on the Brita filter with all the impurities, and you end up actually spending more money than you would have if you just had paid more for the more expensive vodka. Something like that at least. But yeah, it does work. I remember because we wanted to do it at my place last year.... haha

yeah at my bartending class they told us that this works. but yeah, the brita filter dies after a couple of run throughs, so given the cost of buying the filters, it's better just to buy the call brand instead of trying to filter it yourself v__v

The filter trick was actually on the show Myth Busters. Turns out you can take a crummy vodka and make it taste better by filtering it, but it still doesn't compare to good vodka. The reason they mentioned was that the chemical compound of the vodka itself remained unchanged, and was somehow different between the good and poor brands.

Here is a youtube of the episode, warning, TERRIBLE sound quality but it's the only thing I found in 5 minutes of searching at 3am -- Turn your sound down, excessive white noise:

Yeah, filtering bottom shelf does very little. An expert can properly order the samples by number of filtrations just by tasting, but 99% of people out there can't tell the difference.

Anyway, I was like "okay, I'll stop at 2" then my boss said "that's it, everybody has day off!" so I kept going.

My favorite vodkas (I can't figure an order):
First Guild
Finlandia
Ketel One
Belvedere

....though of course none of them is anywhere near as good as a decent whiskey.

Incorrect sir! Welcome to Philadelphia. Everywhere else gets it wrong, as far as everything goes at least. In California "Philadelphia Cheesesteaks" like like this:

Also, Geno's and Pat's don't have the best cheesesteaks, if you ever plan on visiting Philly. Check out the lunch carts at Drexel at 32nd & Market (they are hidden so tourists can't find them!)

But you can directly compare Geno's and Pat's and decide which one is better (and feel sick afterwards)!

Wait so you are saying there are chicken cheesesteaks? I used to live in Philly and I never so anything cheesesteak that wasn't steak.

Or maybe I don't understand what people are saying on the internet again, seems to happen a lot recently.

I approve this, only thing that has happened to me (not once) is partying all night and then go to work without any sleep. You have to stop drinking alcohol early to not come shit faced and eat + drink a lot of water before you go and you can pull it off...it is still the most awkward situation.

I had a turkey sandwich with swiss cheese today, alongside several shots. I had to work but I work upstairs and my boss is downstairs so I was still able to catch almost all of TSL today

I mean seriously it was a 1/2 inch of bread, 6 solid inches of cheese, 2 slices of Swiss cheese, and then another 1/2 inch slice of bread. That something like 19 meters or whatever for you metric folks. It was a big sandwich.
